Cyclodextrins (CDs) have beneficial characteristics for drug delivery, including hydrophobic interior surfaces. Nanocarriers with β-CD ligands have been prepared with simple surface modifications as drug delivery vehicles. In this study, we synthesized β-CD derivatives on an Ag-embedded silica nanoparticle (NP) (SiO2@Ag NP) structure to load and release doxorubicin (DOX). Cysteinyl-β-CD and ethylenediamine-β-CD (EDA-β-CD) were immobilized on the surface of SiO2@Ag NPs, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. DOX was introduced into the β-CD on the SiO2@Ag NPs and then successfully released. Neither cysteinyl-β-CD and EDA-β-CD showed cytotoxicity, while DOX-loaded cysteinyl-β-CD and EDA-β-CD showed a significant decrease in cell viability in cancer cells. The SiO2@Ag NPs with β-CD provide a strategy for designing a nanocarrier that can deliver a drug with controlled release from modified chemical types.

A mycoplasma-like agent, which resembled grey lung ‘virus’ of Andrewes and Glover in its sensitivity to chemotherapeutic substances in vivo, in its failure to grow in culture media, and in its failure to elicit immunity in infected animals, was derived from rats with naturally acquired chronic pneumonia. In mice it produced a chronic pneumonia from which mycoplasmas could not be cultured. When sections of diseased mouse lung were examined by electron microscopy, completely novel intracytoplasmic inclusions were observed in mononuclear cells lying free in the alveoli and bronchioles. The inclusions, which were less numerous in mice being treated with chemotherapeutic substances which inhibit the growth of mycoplasmas, appeared to represent successive stages in a developmental process. The fine structure of the inclusions is described and their possible nature is discussed.

The object of this paper is to study the effect of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) on waterborne polyurethane films (5×10-3 to 5wt % SiO2 NPs). The Nanocompounds’ properties were analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). From the results, the nanocomposites degraded at a higher temperature than pure PU matrix. Moreover, the temperature where the weight loss reached 50% was shifted by 57oC towards higher temperature when the silica nanoparticle content was 5 wt%. The crystallinity, mechanical strength as well as thermostability the PU were influenced by the concentration of silica nanoparticles.
