Echinacea species, a popular medicinal herb throughout the world, have been used by indigenous Americans for hundreds of years as an effective immunostimulant. The cultivated acreage in the United States and Canada is increasing because of the great demand for Echinacea products. Better cultural methods and standardization and quality control of the value-added products are needed to increase the confidence of growers, producers, and consumers in this promising medicinal herb. Echinacea can be propagated from seed, crown division, and root sections. Seed stratification for 4 to 6 weeks at 34 to 40 °F (1 to 4 °C) before planting can improve germination. Echinacea thrives under cultivation in moderately rich and well-drained loam or sandy loam soil with regular irrigation and weed control. Roots are harvested in the fall after 3 to 4 years of cultivation. The best stage to harvest flowers has yet to be determined. Leaves are a source of valuable active ingredients, but no information is available in the literature on leaf harvesting. Active ingredients in Echinacea include polysaccharides, flavonoids, caffeic acid derivatives, essential oils, polyacetylenes, and alkylamides.

The ginseng industry has expanded rapidly in recent years. Asian and American ginseng are cultivated around the world. Ginseng products in various forms are increasingly popular, and its consumers are no longer limited to Asians. More knowledge is needed about the horticultural characteristics, cultural methods, disease control, drying and storage procedures, and technology for value-added products. Once-secretive information about ginseng and its culture is gradually becoming available, especially from the orient. Growers and researchers are eager to know more about Asian and American species of this high-value crop.

Artocarpus chama Buch. Syn. A. chaplasha Linn.( Moraceae), an indigenous fruit of North Eastern (NE) region of India. Samkathal pulp is eaten afresh and possesses high nutritional value. It has also has been reported to contain antioxidant properties. The seeds are also rich source of carbohydrates and proteins and average source of fibre. In spite of these fruits provide enormous health benefits, it is under utilized in our country due to its seasonal availability and very short shelf life. Therefore, it is necessary to preserve and prepare fruit products for better utilization of the fruits by overcoming the problem of wastage. In the present study this fruit was processed to produce many value added products and to train rural communities on value addition. These products have good consumer demand because of its nutritional and medicinal value. It has more demand for development of diversified value added products from the fruits. It provides the employment opportunity for rural mass, increases export demand of value added products and helps in increase the economy of the country.

<p>Coconut export sector in India of late gained an outward orientation, especially since the Coconut Development Board was elevated to the status of export promotion council in the year 2009. In the recent period, the growth rate experienced in the coconut based value added products has been stupendous. Since there is an attempt for global value chain up-gradation at the production node of the sector, it is imperative to analyse our strengths in the world market in comparison with the major competitors. We have used the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) methodology to analyse India’s competitiveness in the exports of major coconut value added products traded across the world. The study revealed that, as far as the coconut value added products are concerned, India is comparatively a very small player with paltry export market shares. The analysis of RCA revealed that comparative advantage of India is lower than the major coconut exporting countries like Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The Philippines is the dominant player with highest RCA indices in most of the coconut value added product lines. The study suggests the need to formulate plausible strategies to reach the overseas market and capture the optimal share in market segments. Though we have a strong domestic market base, it is an indubitable fact that in the near future due to the evolving trade agreements even in the domestic sector we may confront fierce price competition from the overseas imports. Hence we need to chalk out modalities and execution plans to elevate our export competitiveness and comparative advantage.</p>

Energy crisis and continuously fluctuating cost of petroleum have move attention of researchers toward renewable and sustainable energy sources and materials. Biomass or bioresources is one of the abundant and cheap renewable energy sources and materials that is environment friendly in Malaysia and other tropical countries in the world. It has been identified as one of the main sources of the sustainable energy in the fifth fuel strategy in Malaysia. This paper describes several possible routes to provide energy as well as potential value-added products from bioresources. The future trend in thermo-conversion processing of the biomass is the utilization of microwave energy into renewable bio-fuels, materials and chemicals. The potential of uses of bio-oils and bio-chars from oil palm solid wastes for biofuels, materials and chemicals are given. The applications of these renewable sources to produce biofuels, materials and chemicals have been applied in some countries around the world. The implementation of the biomass technology will be best utilized and feasible when the technology is developed locally, fabricated and commission with the utilization of locally produced biomass. With the research and development efforts developed locally towards local expertise will help to produce indigenous technologies, thus reducing the high cost of import technology.

Research background: Today’s world is torn between extreme conservatism and duality, in opposition, trying to break the classical framework of freedom in the movement of people. In the context of complex global relations, this impulse, especially related to the travels for tourism purposes, raises new issues concerning the safety and security. The tourism industry has a priority for the economic development of many countries in the world and is a large source of export earnings and, at the same time, an important factor in the balance of payments of a significant part of the national economies in the world. The growing importance of the tourism industry, however, puts tourist destinations worldwide at the forefront of new challenges, one of which is terrorism. In this environment, new relationships are emerging and this reflects on the development strategies, as well as on the financial outcomes of tourism industry which are also largely affected. Purpose of the article: Respecting the new realities, the study explores the link between the risk of terrorism and the revenues from international tourism. Its main purpose is to investigate the impact of terrorism on the financial revenues from tourism in the European countries and the United States. The research is deter-mined by the perception that the financial flows from the international tourism are the quantitative manifestation of the hidden effects of the terrorism. Methods: The research method includes a regression cross-section analysis and Granger Causality test. The survey is panel and includes 37 countries from Europe tourism region and the United States from Americas’ tourism region (according UNWTO) for the period 2012–2017. Findings & Value added: In conclusion, the effects of terrorism on the studied regions have been summarized, establishing dependence between terrorism and tourism, which illustrates a specific creative-destructive reflections of terrorism on tourism with regions particularities.

Due to the exponential growth of the human population and declining environmental quality in the world, waste derived volatile fatty acids (VFAs) have been identified as a source for the production of value-added products. Throughout this paper, different technologies for the production of value-added products from VFAs, various high content VFA waste streams and value-added products from each process will be discussed. Additionally, an in-depth literature review will be conducted on 5 value added products from VFAs. Highlights of various experiments will be identified as well as common trends in experiments to date. Some considerations will also be given to particular strategies and methods which may enhance the production of a value-added product in the future. Even through the uncertainty it has been proven that waste derived VFAs are a major candidate in contributing to a more environmentally and sustainable society in the immediate future.

In Celebration of the Appearance of the New Journal Ichiro Kato Ex-President, Robotics Society of Japan., Professor, Waseda University It is a great honor for me to extend my congratulations on the occasion of the foundation of this new journal of robotics and mechatronics. Although several academic societies and industrial associations in Japan publish periodicals dealing with robotics and mechatronics, there is no English edition in these fields. It is thus a breakthrough for such an English journal to be published in this country. Since I believe that the development of robotics and mechatronics will be best attained by close international cooperation, I hope this journal will contribute to the promotion of cooperation in these fields. H ere, let me introduce my commitment to robotics. I started a study on artificial hands in 1963. But as a matter of fact, I did not know then that the first industrial robots had appeared in the United States in 1962. Just after the first symposium on robotics held in Tokyo in 1967, certain kinds of robots for industrial use developed in the United States were exhibited in the Harumi Trade Centre in Tokyo. These matters ignited the research and development of robots in Japan. Robots are based on the combined technology of mechanisms and electronics, and robotics has come to play a leading role in the present industrialized world. Industrial robots now have an important place in industrial fields. I forecast that robots will coexist with mankind and assist us not only in industrial fields but also in almost all situations such as welfare and our personal lives. As is well known, Japan is one of the centers in the world for robotics and mechatronics. That is the reason why I celebrate the new publication of this journal in Japan. It will be of significance to achieve greater international exchange of information and ideas by overcoming the barrier of the Japanese language. For the prospects of future robots - my robot, a personal or domestic robot - which will appear in the 21st century, I expect that this journal will play an important role. In Celebration of the Foundation of the ""Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics"" Makoto Kajitani Professor, The University of Electro-Communications It goes without saying that most manufactured products sustammg the recent Japanese industrial growth depend on mechatronics-based technology. Born in Japan in the middle of the 1970's, ""Mechatronics"" has now become a common word in the world, attaining the concept of a central or leading technology in today's industries with its progress. To our regret, however, no mechatronics-professed journal was found either in Japan or worldwide. It is a feat of planning in order to meet the expectations of engineers and researchers engaged in the study of mechatronics in all countries that the first international journal is being published for the world in Japan from which mechatronics originated. As one of the researchers looking forward to the development of mechatronics, I wish to express my gratitude and pleasure. Mechatronics is a technology contriving to create value added through composition and fusion. Mechatronics-like conception is seen in the recent trends of industrial fields to search for new germs of alternation and fusion among different technologies or industries. We are in a time of creating new value through international fusion not only in the branch of technology but also in the spheres of politics and economy. The ultimate aim of developing mechatronics is to be of help to people's mental sufficiency and serenity. The world economy is entering the post-industrial technological stage, the basis of which is the fundamentally new technologies (information and communications, bio-, and nanotechnology). Their importance has significantly increased and is reflected in the transformation of the resource base of the modern economic system. These changes are of a civilizational nature, affecting the national economy of any country, and are embodied in a specific technological policy. The research hypothesis is to identify the leading trends in the post-industrial technological structure in the world economy, consisting in the transformation of technology into a basic resource and in knowledge-intensive nature of production that allows extracting additional benefits from international cooperation, creating unique values and providing an increase in economic value added. The purpose of the present study is to identify key trends and assess the potential of technological development of the world and national economy. In this work, statistical, comparative, dynamic, coefficient-based, and structural research methods are used as the main approaches. The article reveals the main trends, problems, and prospects of technological development of the leading economically developed countries and Russia for 2005-2016. The tendencies of the post-industrial mode of production and the most innovative-driven companies are highlighted in each sector of the economy. The authors define the main stages of changing technological structures in the world economy (pre-industrial, industrial and post-industrial), as well as reveal the technologization processes and their characteristic features proving the change of the role of technologies and their transformation into the main factor of socio-economic system development. The effectiveness of technological development is estimated on the basis of a comparative analysis of Russia with the leading countries of the world using indicators of patent applications to the patent office of the country, the proportion of countries in the total number of publications in scientific journals indexed in Web of Science, as well as the proportion of domestic research and development expenditure as a percentage of GDP presented in dynamic mode for 2005-2016. The authors define key characteristics of digital transformation, including stages, segments, dominant technologies, values, and approaches, as well as calculate the level of the economic added value of the country as a target indicator of technologization of the social and economic system. The authors have revealed a direct relationship between the size and nature of the investment and technological development, as well as made conclusion about the need to invest in key sectors of technological development, which is actively progressing in Europe, India, the Republic of Korea, Japan, China, and the United States.

Boxwood blight caused by Calonectria pseudonaviculata results in severe defoliation and dieback to boxwood (Buxus spp.). The pathogen was first described in the United Kingdom and New Zealand in the mid to late 1990s and has since spread throughout Europe and most recently to the United States and Canada. While many Calonectria spp. have an epidemiologically significant soil phase, little is known of the role of the soil phase of C. pseudonaviculata in the epidemiology of boxwood blight. We optimized a leaf disc bioassay for detecting and quantifying this pathogen in soil and compared this bioassay with a standard soil plating assay originally developed for quantifying Calonectria using a Suffolk sandy-loam soil. Additionally, the sensitivity of both assays was compared among three distinct soil types (sand-loam, silt-loam, and sand-peat potting media). The optimal incubation time for baiting C. pseudonaviculata from soil using the leaf disc bioassay was 96 h. The optimal soil moisture for the bioassay was 1,000% of field capacity (flooded with 3 to 5 mm water). The leaf disc bioassay was able to detect C. pseudonaviculata at levels as low as 1 microsclerotium/ g soil while the soil plating bioassay was unable to detect the pathogen below inoculum levels of 10 microsclerotia/g soil in the Suffolk sandy-loam soil. Soil type had a significant impact on the sensitivity of both assays.
