Greenhouse, growth chamber, and winter survival studies were conducted at Stoneville, MS from 1996 to 2002 to determine growth, time to first flower, and winter survival of wetland nightshade. At 12 wk after emergence, wetland nightshade plants had 58-, 45-, 48-, and 4-cm heights, respectively; 24, 21, 21, and 12 nodes/plant, respectively; 62, 31, 36, and 21 leaves/plant, respectively; and 7.1, 3.9, 5.1, and 0.3 g/plant dry weights, respectively, at temperatures of 26/36, 20/30, 14/24, and 8/18 (±0.5) C at the 14/10 day/night length. Flowering occurred at 79, 85, and 85 days after emergence at 26/36, 20/30, and 14/24 C night/day, respectively at the 14/10 day/night cycle. Wetland nightshade plants did not flower at 8/18 C. Wetland nightshade growth was adequate for flowering and fruit production in additional areas of the southeastern United States with night/day temperatures greater than or equal to 14/24 C. Winter survival was greater than or equal to 33% for established wetland nightshade plants in 5 of 6(1996 to 2002) above water levels and 82% from 20 cm below the water surface. Based on these results, wetland nightshade has the potential to continue to spread in the United States.

The common bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana Shaw, of the Southeastern United States was introduced to Puerto Rico in 1935 by the Insular Department of Agriculture and Commerce. Mr. Adger C. Smyth, head of the Ornithology and Pisciculture Service, notes in its 1935 Annual Report that a total of 40 frogs from Florida were placed in a specially constructed pond at Río Piedras. In the 1936 Annual Report he stated that the introduction and breeding of the bullfrog in Puerto Rico had been very successful. The present range of the bullfrog in the Island is not known exactly, but may be expanding rapidly in the more humid coastal areas. The frog is at present definitely known to be in the environs of Río Piedras and neighboring towns, and at Mayagüez and Humacao. Most recently it was reported from Barceloneta, where it caused a great deal of nervousness among the inhabitants who had never before heard the noise made by the male frog. So many stories and superstitions were current about these noises in the night that the Station had to explain the cause in the newspapers to bring peace to those people. The same thing happened some 10 years ago in the vicinity of Río Piedras, but this time a continental lady, Miss Asea Watson, who probably had heard the bullfrog's croak many times in the States, cleared up the mystery. She called a group of neighbors one night and with the aid of a flashlight and a home-made net caught the amphibian ghost and showed it to the astonished people.

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a novel mind perception manipulation. Mind perception is currently theorized to be an essential aspect of a number of human social psychological processes. Thus, a successful manipulation would allow for the causal study of those processes. This manipulation was created in an attempt to explore the downstream impact of mind perception on the endorsement of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are steadily becoming more and more prominent in social discourse. Endorsement of conspiracy theories are beginning to show real world ramifications such as a danger to human health (e.g., in the anti-vaccination movement). A sample of college students (valid N = 53) from a large rural institution in the southeastern United States participated for course credit. These participants completed a mind perception pretest, were randomly assigned to either the manipulation in question (in which participants are asked to consider the ‘mind’ of several targets and write their thoughts about them) or the control condition, and then they completed a posttest. The mixed ANOVA revealed that the interaction term between Time and Condition was not significant. Because the manipulation did not work, other analyses were aborted, in accord with the pre-registration. My Discussion focuses on the procedures and potential shortcomings of this manipulation, in an effort to lay the groundwork for a successful one.
