The aim of this chapter is to better understand the enabling and inhibiting impacts IT has on lean manufacturing. This chapter provides a rich picture of a paper mill producing liner reels and the impact of a reel administration system on the manufacturing process. It is important that an IT tool supporting lean manufacturing reflects its organization. When it does the IT tool can act as an enabler of organizational change that in turn increase productivity and the production quality, when it fails to do so it inhibits organizational change and hampers the quality of production. The conclusion is that framing the definition of high production quality regarding product and process is important and that teambuilding would be a contribution to this end by enhancing perspective taking among the employees.

Purpose Place-based foodstuffs have gained salience in markets worldwide and geographical indication (GI) products are prominent examples. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the governance (formal and informal institutions) of the European and Japanese GI schemes, discuss the variety of procedures of implementing the features of the governance system (inclusion and exclusion of actors) for six GI cases and reflect on future GI governance. Design/methodology/approach The criteria for assessing the six cases were descriptive and analytical and the information and data come from official documents, literature (scientific and “grey”), interviews, observations and personal communications with key-informants of the GI systems. Three of the cases are categorized as “failures” and are included to provide more insights on the diverse dynamics of GI systems. Findings Registration of GIs seems to be a process rather than a single step, requesting coordination and consensus and an interplay between internal and external actors. “Success” and “failure” are relative and related to self-governance processes and the openness of the social system of the GI to establish transparency on inclusion and exclusion. GI systems require constant management and re-definition of production quality or geographical boundaries to adapt to market, climate or technological change. Originality/value The paper introduces GI systems categorized as “failures” (either products that did not register as GIs in the end or did register but failed to keep the registration) which provides more insights on how to design and manage complex GI systems.

Traditionally the production quality of components is described by “acceptable quality levels” (AQL). Agreements, referring to this principle, determine the acceptance or refusal of batches that have been sample tested. An acceptable quality of level is interpreted as a tolerated limit. In reality true values of quality must be better. An AQL value cannot define a real quality level. Furthermore, increasing requirements for component quality lead to low figures for the permissible amount of faulty devices in batches, and the method of sample testing becomes insufficient.For these reasons it seems to be of major importance to establish a better standard for the definition of quality. The application oriented description of quality data offers a possible solution. A good exchange of experience between supplier and user, based on a close and quality loop, is necessary.For contractual purposes AQL values remain important, but their meaning needs a new interpretation.

The paper deals with the solution of the scientific and practical task of controlling the accuracy of the parameters of the process of making kefir and improving its quality by creating a heuristic analyzer based on the user interface of the fuzzy logic system. The factors influencing the accuracy of the operation of the digital meter are analyzed, the possibility of using the fuzzy logic apparatus has been proved to determine the parameters of the technological process that ensure the maximum quality of the product. Computer simulation was carried out, which confirmed that the creation of a heuristic analyzer for determining the quality of yogurt is appropriate and necessary in order to prevent the production of low-quality products through the definition of the stage of production on which there is a deviation of the technology and timely eliminate the violation.

Entertainment and Media industry has enriched human life and is indispensable in contemporary society, in which variety shows play an essential role. In terms of contents and types of variety shows, people are constantly exploring and innovating, creating entertaining programs dealing with topical references. Based on the status quo of Chinese variety-show market, this paper provides insight into successful cases of incorporating Chinese unique characteristics into prevailing shows via innovative modes, in pursuit of both commercial and social values. Mixed research methods, including comparative case study, Semi-structured interview and analysis of existing statistics, are employed to explore this topic. We have four interviewees from distinct fields, which helps us to conduct more comprehensive analysis on the innovation modes applied in both cases--- Sisters Who Make Waves and China Poetry Congress, in view of Schumpeter’s classical definition of innovation. We find that new reassembling of traditional components gives the variety shows a cutting edge, reflected in the application of new technology or the destruction of conventional modes. In fact, the essence of both cultural innovation and mode innovation relies on creative assimilation of original elements. Generally, Chinese variety shows are supposed to enhance the production quality and impacts of platforms through content innovation, mode diversification and giving full play to celebrity benefits.

The definition of “normal” stars in spectral classification changes with time; at the time of the publication of theYerkes Spectral Atlasthe term “normal” was applied to stars whose spectra could be fitted smoothly into a two-dimensional array. Thus, at that time, weak-lined spectra (RR Lyrae and HD 140283) would have been considered peculiar. At the present time we would tend to classify such spectra as “normal”—in a more complicated classification scheme which would have a parameter varying with metallic-line intensity within a specific spectral subdivision.

An ideal definition of a reference coordinate system should meet the following general requirements:1. No paper of this nature should begin without a definition of symbiotic stars. It was Paul Merrill who, borrowing on his botanical background, coined the termsymbioticto describe apparently single stellar systems which combine the TiO absorption of M giants (temperature regime ≲ 3500 K) with He II emission (temperature regime ≳ 100,000 K). He and Milton Humason had in 1932 first drawn attention to three such stars: AX Per, CI Cyg and RW Hya. At the conclusion of the Mount Wilson Ha emission survey nearly a dozen had been identified, and Z And had become their type star. The numbers slowly grew, as much because the definition widened to include lower-excitation specimens as because new examples of the original type were found. In 1970 Wackerling listed 30; this was the last compendium of symbiotic stars published.

During the past investigations of immunoferritin localization of intracellular antigens in ultrathin frozen sections, we found that the degree of negative staining required to delineate u1trastructural details was often too dense for the recognition of ferritin particles. The quality of positive staining of ultrathin frozen sections, on the other hand, has generally been far inferior to that attainable in conventional plastic embedded sections, particularly in the definition of membranes. As we discussed before, a main cause of this difficulty seemed to be the vulnerability of frozen sections to the damaging effects of air-water surface tension at the time of drying of the sections.Indeed, we found that the quality of positive staining is greatly improved when positively stained frozen sections are protected against the effects of surface tension by embedding them in thin layers of mechanically stable materials at the time of drying (unpublished).
