The safe management of fecal sludge (FS) relies on different treatments, processes, and disposal options in different contexts. Waste transfer stations can improve FS management particularly in resource-constrained areas, including low-income urban informal settlements, by providing a safe discharge and treatment location. Low-footprint options for FS treatment are sensitive to the characteristics of incoming FS, which are typically highly variable, difficult to predict, and differ significantly from the characteristics of traditional wastewater. The success of low-footprint technologies relies on the monitoring of incoming FS characteristics, such as total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, electrical conductivity (EC), and pH. Monitoring the characteristics of incoming FS typically relies on the use of a laboratory, which can be expensive and time-consuming, particularly in resource-constrained areas. Useful correlations between easy to measure parameters and difficult to measure parameters may provide useful information related to the monitoring of FS, while reducing the need for laboratory analysis. In this paper, we describe a sampling campaign at a waste transfer station in Nairobi, Kenya managed by Sanergy Inc., to characterize and observe settling behavior of FS collected from manually emptied pit latrines. The investigation found that easy to measure parameters (e.g., TS, turbidity) could be used to approximate difficult to measure parameters (COD, TSS). Additionally, rapid measurements (turbidity) could be used to approximate time-intensive parameters (TS, COD, TSS) to aid in the design, operation and monitoring of FS treatment facilities in resource and space-constrained areas.

The serious shortage of domestic waste disposal facilities and the level lower of domestic waste disposal have had an important effect on the quality of the urban environment and urban sustainable development. In this paper, control function requirement and method are proposed by analyzing the process of horizontal preloading domestic waste transfer station. With PLC technology and configuration-monitoring technology, the hardware and software of domestic waste compressing equipment control system are developed. In order to achieve different simulation test, a test method of using configuration software script language is proposed.

The economic, ecological, sanitary, and epidemiologic direction of problem of anthropogenous impact on environment and quality of waste management of the city are interested. The methodological questions of urban development of waste management are researched is not much well. The scientific substantiation of methodological system of waste management and distribution of waste collection points are the first solution of the problem in waste management. The organization of the system of sanitary cleaning of residential areas is based on the principles of a systematic approach: the principle of integrity means that the system of sanitary purification has clearly expressed spatial-planning and technological-organizational boundaries; the principle of hierarchical structure involves consideration of urban and technological organization of the system of sanitary purification in the fullness of its elements, essential connections between them. The basis of the method is the satisfying of urban planning principles, requirements and conditions of the territory when choosing a method of collecting sanitary cleaning. The decision on technological or organizational-technological way of collecting household waste is made at the third or second technological level and is based on urban planning requirements, analysis of the territory, and is made according to a number of restrictions that characterize the territory. The main urban planning restrictions when choosing a method of collection: territorial restriction, population density of the block, the perimeter of the territory of the block, the area of the territory within the streets, the area of influence of the waste transfer station.

Many studies have considered the location of rural waste transfer stations, but most have omitted the impact of transportation network conditions. Traffic accessibility must be considered in optimizing the location of rural waste transfer stations, which is an important difference from the location of rural waste transfer stations. On the basis of previous studies, this study will consider the impact of traffic network on the optimization locations of waste transfer station in the rural areas. The objective of this study was to ensure the minimum Euclidean distance between the waste transfer station and the population center is the maximum, minimize the garbage transportation cost of each population center, construction costs for waste transfer stations, construction and upgrade costs for roads on a traffic network. A multi-objective facility location-network design model and an improved multi-objective simulated annealing algorithm was used to solve the problem. A detailed practical case study was used to illustrate the application of the proposed mathematical model. The results show that transportation network plays an important role in facility location optimization, and the improvement of traffic network conditions can greatly reduce waste transportation costs.
