World-class Extended-reach Drilling Performance in Abu Dhabi ( A Case Study in How to Beat the Learning Curve

Abstract ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) recently drilled some wells in Onshore Abu Dhabi (Field-A) and encountered consistent hole instability from Umm Er Radhuma (UER) to Simsima. Thus, a GeoMechanical review was proposed to investigate the root causes, if any, and recommend possible remedies for the upcoming drilling campaign. While detailed drilling event analysis allowed to investigate the correlation between the mud weight program and well trajectory, borehole image log analysis and geological understanding from nearby fields indicated the possible role of structural and lithological features on hole instability. Integration of drilling engineering data and regional geological knowledge helped to narrow down the possible causes of drilling challenges. Sedimentalogical review of Image logs have established some correlation between rock types and hole instability events. Drilling experience shows there is very narrow margin for loss and/or gain to occur. There is regional geological evidence of the presence of a wide range of vuggy structures, as well as natural fractures and/or faults. These features tend to make Simsima formation heterogeneous in terms of permeability and more prone to losses. Since most fractures are parallel to SHmax direction and well was drilled towards Shmin direction, there are greater chances of encountering faults and/or fractures, which would be critically-stressed and lead to loss and/or gain situations. Geomechanical parameters helped highlight the magnitudes and orientations of principal stresses. Observations of several tight hole and stuck pipe events while tripping from Radhuma and UERB shale to Simsima seem to indicate mud weight used was insufficient. Role of multiple failure mechanisms was identified, and relevant solutions were recommended as well as implemented to achieve the drilling success. The case study presented here emphasizes how different carbonate textures and the presence and orientation of natural fractures and/or faults within Simsima formation can impact hole instability with respect to wellbore trajectory. Proactive implementation of recommendations from this analysis on well planning and fluid design resulted in improvement of drilling performance and reduction of non-productive time in new wells.

For S-15 and S-14 wells at South S Field, drilling of the 12-1/4” hole section became the longest tangent hole section interval of both wells. There were several challenges identified where hole problems can occur. The hole problems often occur in the unconsolidated sand layers and porous limestone formation sections of the hole during tripping in/out operations. Most of the hole problems are closely related to the design of the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA). In many instances, hole problems resulted in significant additional drilling time. As an effort to resolve this issue, a new BHA setup was then designed to enhance the BHA drilling performance and eventually eliminate hole problems while drilling. The basic idea of the enhanced BHA is to provide more annulus clearance and limber BHA. The purpose is to reduce the Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD,) less contact area with formation, and reduce packoff risk while drilling through an unconsolidated section of the rocks. Engineering simulations were conducted to ensure that the enhanced BHA were able to deliver a good drilling performance. As a results, improved drilling performance can be seen on S-14 well which applied the enhanced BHA design. The enhanced BHA was able to drill the 12-1/4” tangent hole section to total depth (TD) with certain drilling parameter. Hole problems were no longer an issue during tripping out/in operation. This improvement led to significant rig time and cost savings of intermediate hole section drilling compared to S-15 well. The new enhanced BHA design has become one of the company’s benchmarks for drilling directional wells in South S Field.

Recently, electric vehicles (EV) have gained much attention as a potential enabling technology to support CO2 emissions reduction targets. Relative to their internal combustion vehicle counterparts, EVs consume less energy per unit distance, and add the benefit of not emitting any carbon dioxide in operation and instead shift their emissions to the existing local fleet of power generation. However, the true success of EVs depends on their successful integration with the supporting infrastructure systems. Building upon the recently published methodology for the same purpose, this paper presents a “systems-of-systems” case study assessing the impacts of EVs on these three systems in the context of Abu Dhabi. For the physical transportation system, a microscopic discrete-time traffic operations simulator is used to predict the kinematic state of the EV fleet over the duration of one day. For the impact on the intelligent transportation system (ITS), the integration of EVs into Abu Dhabi is studied using a multi-domain matrix (MDM) of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transportation ITS. Finally, for the impact on the electric power system, the EV traffic flow patterns from the CMS are used to calculate the timing and magnitude of charging loads. The paper concludes with the need for an intelligent transportation-energy system (ITES) which would coordinate traffic and energy management functionality.

AbstractDirectional drilling is a common and essential procedure of major extended reach drilling operations. With the development of directional drilling technologies, the percentage of recoverable oil production has increased. However, its challenges, like real-time bit steering, directional drilling tools selection and control, are main barriers leading to low drilling efficiency and high nonproductive time. The fact inspires this study. Our work aims to contribute to the better understanding of directional drilling, more specifically regarding rotary steerable system (RSS) technology. For instance, finding the solutions of the technological challenges involved in RSSs, such as bit steering control, bit position calculation and bit speed estimation, is the main considerations of our study. Classical definitions from fundamental physics including Newton’s third law, beam bending analysis, bit force analysis, rate of penetration (ROP) modeling are employed to estimate bit position and then conduct RSS control to steer the bit accordingly. The results are illustrated in case study with the consideration of the 2D and 3D wellbore scenarios.

In selecting papers for this feature, reviewer Stéphane Menand of Helmerich and Payne has identified a trio of papers that investigates new approaches toward familiar issues encountered when drilling complex well types. Whether considering the customization of drilling approaches in Middle Eastern carbonate reservoirs, implementing a collaborative work flow in tackling high-tortuosity wells offshore Western Australia, or researching the ability of a fibrous material to effect hole cleaning as opposed to polymeric sweeps, the authors of these papers understand that technical expertise may not be completely realized if it is not applied to problems in original ways. In carbonate reservoirs, the goal of drilling extended-reach wells is set against the geological makeup of such formations, the complexity of which adds significant uncertainty to geosteering and well placement. The authors of paper SPE 203335 develop a work flow that makes possible the customization of drilling scenarios through an emphasis on mechanical specific energy, as well as the use of an optimized borehole-assembly design. The work flow helped deliver what the authors write is the longest well in the Middle East offshore Abu Dhabi. In a similar vein, the authors of paper SPE 202251 describe a challenging scenario involving an ultraextended-reach well in a mature field offshore Western Australia. The project overcame shallow water depth and a high tortuosity requirement by implementing an integrated plan that used a reservoir-mapping-while-drilling service. The authors stress that this technology, coupled with active collaboration between specialists, town, and rig site, allowed the project to achieve the desired oil-column thickness with zero collision incidents. Highly deviated wells often face problems resulting from ineffective hole cleaning. Paper SPE 203147 studies the properties of a fibrous material when compared with the hole-cleaning performance of common polymeric pills. The authors write that the fibrous material proved effective, in part because of a unique characteristic in which a spiderweb-like network of fibers is created that does not allow cuttings to settle easily in complex wells. In addition, the material is environmentally friendly. All three papers approach well- established problems in the critical industry sector of extended-reach drilling with innovation and confidence. This paper looks at the City of Melbourne's new office development CH2 as a case study of world class energy performance. In particular, the integrated design of conventionally independent systems has led to the potential to deliver significant savings to the Council and to deliver better environmental conditions to building occupants that in turn may contribute to satisfaction, well-being and productivity. It is concluded that this project has the potential to be an iconic example of effective implementation of ESD (environmental sustainable design) principles and therefore act as a demonstration project to others. Energy efficiency of more than 50% of current benchmarks for Melbourne is effected. Energy harvesting is defined as arising from squander, waste and nature, which is a new concept introduced in this paper to better describe the design decision process.
