Examining College Music Majors’ Perceived Barriers and Motivation to Exercise

Previous research has revealed music majors, in general, do not identify as exercisers, subjecting them to various health risks. Influenced by self-determination theory, the current study examined exercise motivation and self-efficacy in overcoming barriers to exercise in relation to number of times per week collegiate music majors reported they engaged in physical exercise. One hundred six college music majors completed a demographic questionnaire regarding their participation in marching music activities and how many days per week they engaged in physical exercise. They also completed two standardized questionnaires that assessed their motivation to exercise (i.e., Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-2) and their confidence in overcoming barriers to exercise (i.e., Barriers Specific Self-Efficacy Scale). Results indicated that music majors who espoused a stronger identified motivation to exercise and had greater self-efficacy in their perceived ability to overcome barriers to exercise reported a greater frequency of exercise engagement. Sex difference were also found, with female music students being less confident (than their male counterparts) in their ability to overcome barriers to exercise. These findings highlight the motivations, obstacles, and perceptions of exercise in the music culture, providing a helpful start for comprehending what drives individuals in this domain.

72 college music majors were randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups of equal numbers. Some were exposed to 3 creative thinking strategies and encouraged to brainstorm in their groups for a period of 400 min. Positive transfer of training supports the use of the procedures to encourage music students to think creatively with sounds and words.

This study characterized perceived social support and performance anxiety of college music students, compared characteristics to those of non-music majors, and explored the relationships between social support and performance anxiety. Subjects (n = 609) completed a questionnaire that included demographics, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and visual analog scale measures of performance anxiety. Results showed that music majors perceived significantly lower levels of social support from significant others when compared to non-music majors. Perceived social support was significantly correlated with measures of performance anxiety. Students with greater perceived social support reported less frequent anxiety and lower levels of impact of anxiety on ability to perform. These findings may have practical implications for schools of music and conservatories.

En este artículo se analiza el perfil motivacional hacia la práctica de ejercicio físico entre los escolares de varios centros educativos a través de la Teoría de la Autodeterminación de Deci y Ryan, diferenciando los resultados en función del sexo, el modo de la práctica deportiva (federado vs. no federado) y el deporte practicado; así como conocer la influencia de la implantación de una unidad de iniciación en el ámbito escolar en la práctica de este deporte en horario extracurricular. Un total de 306 alumnos/as de 5º de primaria a 4º de la Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) con edades comprendidas entre los 9 y 16 años, los cuales pertenecían a centros educativos en los cuales se había dado una unidad didáctica de iniciación al piragüismo, completaron la versión en castellano del BREQ-2. Los resultados mostraron que sólo el 57.2% de los sujetos practicaban deporte federado, siendo la mayoría de ellos hombres. Se ha encontrado que los estudiantes tenían puntuaciones altas en motivación intrínseca, moderadas en regulación identificada y regulación introyectada, bajas en regulación externa y muy bajas en desmotivación, mostrando quienes practican deporte federado unos niveles más altos de motivación intrínseca y la regulación identificada que los que hacían deporte no federado. Los hombres mostraron una mayor motivación intrínseca que las mujeres. No se encontraron diferencias en función de la modalidad deportiva practicada. El fútbol fue el deporte más practicado, seguido del piragüismo y el baloncesto.Palabras clave: deporte, deporte federado, adolescentes, autodeterminación, ejercicio físico, piragüismo.Abstract: This paper analyzes the motivational profile in physical exercise among students from various schools with the Deci & Ryan’ self-determination theory. The results were divided according to sex, mode of sport (federated vs non-federated) and the sport modality, as well as know the influence of the implantation of an initiation unit in the school in the practice of this sport in extracurricular schedule. A total of 306 male / female students from Elementary 5th to 4º ESO, with ages between 9 and 16, who belonged to schools in which there had been teaching a didactical unit of initiation to canoeing, completed the Spanish version of the BREQ-2. The results showed only a 57.2% of the students did federate sport, most of them being men. Students had high scores in intrinsic motivation, moderate scores in identified regulation and introjected regulation, low scores in external regulation, and very low scores in demotivation. Federated sport practitioners showing higher levels of intrinsic motivation and identified regulation than those who did not federated sport. Men showed greater intrinsic motivation than women. No differences were found depending on the sport modality practiced. Football is the most popular sport, followed by canoeing and basketball.Key words: sport, federated sport, teenagers, self-determination, physical exercise, canoeing.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in the hospital staff, as well as to identify protective factors of COVID-19 anxiety once the coronavirus pandemic was announced in Poland.Methods90 healthcare workers from the hospital in Poland completed validated self-report questionnaires assessing self-efficacy, emotional control, and PTSD symptoms; a questionnaire assessing COVID-19 anxiety; and a socio-demographic questionnaire. A multiple linear regression was conducted to assess the effects of gender, being directly vs indirectly exposed to patients, and general self-efficacy on COVID-19 anxiety.ResultsThe analysis showed that female (β = −0.271, p < 0.01) healthcare professionals indirectly exposed to patients (β = −0.336, p < 0.01) and those who reported lower levels of general self-efficacy (β = −0.295, p < 0.01) have a stronger tendency to experience COVID-19 anxiety [R2 = 0.301, F(3,89) = 12.34, p < 0.01].ConclusionThe findings show the importance of self-efficacy for dealing with COVID-19 anxiety. The internal coping strategies should be introduced to healthcare workers.

The purpose of this study was to examine biochemical and physiological responses to musical stimuli. Specifically, university music and biology students' plasma levels of norepinephrine, endorphin, and Cortisol, and their galvanic skin responses were measured before and after listening to two different musical selections in an anechoic chamber and during controlled silence. The results indicated that biochemical variables changed significantly in both groups during listening to music but were not different during the controlled silence. These data suggest that music majors may listen more analytically to music. GSR responses were significantly higher for music majors than biology majors, and plasma Cortisol increased in music students but decreased in biology students. Music which elicits specific emotions induces physiological changes which may be beneficial to relaxation and behavioral therapies.

For music teachers to be most effective, they must possess the dispositions that best facilitate their students’ learning. In this article, we present and discuss the findings of a study in which we sought to explore music majors’ self-appraisals in and the extent to which they value the disposition areas of reflectivity, empathic caring, musical comprehensiveness, and musical learnability orientation. Evidence from a survey of 110 music majors suggested that music education students possess and value the dispositions of reflectivity, musical comprehensiveness, and musical learnability orientation more highly after they have matured through their college careers. Additionally, based on their responses to music teaching scenarios, it appears that senior music education majors possess greater empathic caring than do their freshman counterparts.
