The article by Guptill in this issue of MPPA presents the results of a type of research that has not been published to a great extent in the performing arts healthcare literature to date. Only a few articles that are based on qualitative research have been published in this journal. The vast majority of original research published in this and other music and dance medicine journals (and indeed, most other biomedical journals) starts out with a specific hypothesis and then collects quantifiable data to prove or disprove the hypothesis; we can think of this traditional approach as being quantitative research. ... While there is considerable ongoing debate about the role of qualitative research, I will attempt to give a broad overview of how it could be useful as we try to move the field of performing arts medicine forward.

The field of performing arts medicine has grown significantly over the last few decades. While we still have a long way to go before we can confidently state that we know how to prevent and treat the maladies that interfere with artistic performance, we are making progress on several fronts. In preparation for giving one of the keynote addresses at the 2015 University of South Florida--Performing Arts Medicine Association Conference titled Caring for Artists and Arts that Heal, I reviewed the types of articles that have been published in Medical Problems of Performing Artists over the last 10 years. I also did a comparison of those articles to articles published in the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science and in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. In this editorial, I will present my findings.

The role of a mother in maintaining a child's health is very important. Knowledge, attitude, motivation, availability of health care facilities, behavior of health workers influence the formation of health behaviors. This study aims to analyze the factors that are related and the most dominant towards exclusive breastfeeding for mothers working in Government Agencies in Bungo Regency. This study uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative research uses cross sectional design. The sample in the quantitative study was 50 mothers who had babies> 6-12 months, while in qualitative research there were 6 in-depth interviews with the heads of the Bungo District Government Agencies. The results of the study obtained the proportion of exclusive breastfeeding as much as 34%. Factors related to breastfeeding are birth attendants and caregiver / family support and the most dominant in exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers is the support of caregivers / family. The scope of exclusive breastfeeding has not reached the target of 80% of the targets set by the Government due to lack of support from Government Agencies, health workers and from caregivers / families. Various efforts are needed to improve the achievement of coverage of exclusive breastfeeding, especially through supporting facilities to support exclusive breastfeeding and the optimization of the role of the Health Office.

This is the second consecutive 5-year review of the performing arts medicine bibliography, emphasizing articles published from 2002 through 2006. It combines with an earlier 5-year review, published in 2003 and covering 1997 to 2001, to review the last 10 years' literature in performing arts medicine. From a total of 8,412 references dating back more than 200 years, 2,030 were found in the study period. Nearly 85% of these were written in English, with French and German language articles comprising more than 87% of the rest. Within the study group, there were 1,438 music medicine references (70.8%) and 458 for dance medicine (22.6%). Scientific journals and books were the source of more than 62% of all articles, with five performing arts medicine journals accounting for more than 40% of these. However, pertinent references were found in 381 different periodicals, as well as in a variety of textbooks. Of all arts-related periodicals, those pertaining to voice and dance were most likely to contain health-related articles. Variations in the total number of references, sources of references, and frequency of specific topics occurred from year to year, and from the first study period to the second. These often can be attributed to publication of journals containing multiple abstracts from a meeting or journals with papers on a single topic—often derived from one symposium. Based on a comparison of the two 5-year reporting periods, these statistics will continue to vary as new entries are added in future years. The data from this investigation should be useful to both researchers and clinicians in performing arts medicine, regarding both the sources of pertinent information and the authors and topics currently being published.

The author reviewed the bibliography of performing arts medicine, from the beginnings of the specialty in the early 1980s to the present. Emphasis was placed on articles published in the last five full years reviewed (1997-2001). From a total of 5,550 references dating back more than 200 years, 1,366 were found in the 1997-2001 period. Nearly 82% were written in English, with French- and German-language articles comprising more than 90% of the rest. Within the study group, there were 972 music medicine references (71.2%) and 301 for dance medicine (22.0%). Scientific journals and books were the source of more than 70% of all articles found, with four performing arts medicine journals accounting for more than half of these. However, pertinent references were found in 279 different periodicals, as well as in a variety of textbooks. Of all arts-related periodicals, those pertaining to voice were most likely to contain health-related articles. Variations from year to year in total number of references, sources of references, and frequency of specific topics could be attributed to publication of texts with multiple chapter authors, journals containing multiple abstracts from a meeting, or journals with papers on a single topic derived from one symposium. It is expected that these statistics will continue to vary as new entries are added in future years. The data from this investigation should be useful to both researchers and clinicians in performing arts medicine, regarding both the sources of pertinent information and the authors and topics currently being published.

ABSTRACT Qualitative research is a simple, inexpensive and effective tool in medical research. The data analysis in qualitative researches, though based on certain ground rules, do not follow a rigid process like the data analysis of quantitative researches. It is ongoing through and through method. One interesting feature of data collection and analysis in qualitative research is “constant comparison”. This is a highly unique method in this type of research as compared to the quantitative research. Qualitative researches usually involve inductive reasoning, but there is deductive reasoning also. The first step of analyzing qualitative data is to transcribe all data into English from vernacular language. This transcript is then subjected to selection of “codes” which are nothing but descriptive names applied to certain thoughts coming up repeatedly in a transcript. Several codes together make a broader “category”. Themes are emerged from categories which are broad categories of information. The process of transcript analysis is called “content analysis” and this is at the end converted into “thematic analysis” which gives the meaning of the whole research and the answers to the original research question(s). There is ‘consolidated criteria’ for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) which is a 32 item check list for interviews and focus group discussions.

This article discusses the most popular diagnostic instruments employed when exploring the role of individual learner differences in foreign/second language acquisition. It thus focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of the quantitative research tradition, which relying on data recorded in numerical form, resorted to various inventories, but most importantly questionnaires designed for a specific research objective. In spite of their obvious drawbacks, highly structured questionnaires do not in any way seem to be devoid of certain research merits. However, since quantitative and qualitative research approaches represent different ways of thinking about and understanding the surrounding world, it is more advisable to adopt compromise in research, which will enable the researcher to place the phenomenon explored in a wider perspective.

ABSTRACT In this paper, the author discusses the qualitative shift in educational research from a historical dependence on positivist and post-positivist frameworks to a proliferation of research situated within a qualitative, interpretivist paradigm. Offering a Canadian perspective, the author situates the discussion of critical qualitative research in relation to the growing neoliberal influence on educational contexts and policy decisions. She argues the need for educational researchers to conduct critical qualitative research to explore the complex issues that educators face to ensure that all students have access to equitable educational experiences, not only those students who represent the Canadian dominant white, middle-class norm. The author introduces a strand of qualitative research focused on the experiences of black, racialized and Indigenous students to illustrate the need for critical research that privileges local knowledge and human experience, while also taking into account the dominant institutional structures that shape educational experience. Although acknowledging the place of quantitative research in the educational domain, she argues that critical qualitative research is essential to understand the experiences of marginalized students in educational contexts and to provide space for voices not available in the quantitative domain. The author concludes that critical qualitative research has an important role to play in informing new directions in educational practices and policies that will help to ensure a socially just education for all students, regardless of backgrounds.

Many institutions of higher education do not have well-developed qualitative research methods programs. Consequently, the role of qualitative research is minimized, and its legitimacy questioned as the methodology of choice in dissertations, relegating qualitative research as second fiddle to quantitative research. In this chapter, the authors present how using a three-dimensional multiuser virtual/digital world called Second Life serves as a fertile and rigorous space for critically engaged ethnographic practices in an institution where resources for qualitative research are scant. Using information extracted from students' projects conducting mini-ethnographies in Second Life, their YouTube podcasts, students' reflections in learning key concepts in qualitative research without prior exposure to this methodology, the authors engage in a discussion of transformative learning experiences. Discussion of transformative learning experiences includes an intersection of critical dialogue of integration of digital technologies, virtual worlds in qualitative research, kind of learning and learners produced as a result, and reflections necessary for pedagogically aligned instructional design and delivery.
