The Sunflower Movement—an occupation of the Legislative Yuan (the Congress) for 24 days—was an unprecedented moment in the history of Taiwan. We examine the social foundation of the Movement and explore an important factor that has long been missing in the literature of Taiwanese politics: nationalism. We divide nationalism into three dimensions: national attachment, national chauvinism, and feelings toward other countries. Using original survey data collected six months after the Movement, we find that national attachment (being proud of Taiwan) and anti-China feelings are unique dimensions and both lead to a higher level of support for the Sunflower Movement. National chauvinism, on the other hand, is not associated with supports for the Movement. Furthermore, the impact of nationalism is contingent on sociotropic views. People who express higher levels of nationalism are more responsive to the issue of rising income inequality when evaluating the Movement. The underlying logic is when people are more nationalistic they care more about the potential social impact of expanding socio-economic exchanges with another country. These results point to it being necessary to disentangle various components of nationalism and further investigate their effects on individuals’ political behaviors.

In the minds of the community, every eviction creates anxiety. Because the place of residence embedded in the meaning and memory in it will be evicted. Unlike the case with the eviction of land (not settlements), which is active or not. Because the landowners in the village are mostly from outside the village (local people call the people of Jakarta). This study uses a qualitative approach that looks at the holistic picture of the object of research in explaining the social phenomena under study, namely the impact of evicting the construction of the Ciawi and Sukamahi reservoirs. The data collection technique used in this study is the RRA method, to accurately collect information in a limited time when decisions about rural development must be taken immediately. With the research approaches and methods used, this study produced several conclusions and recommendations, including, First, the Government must provide new residential land and with collective relocation. Second, the government must maintain socio-cultural, customs that are usually routinely carried out in the village, are maintained and also provide a place to build facilities for worship infrastructure, such as mosques, and table society of religion, even though the place for burial. Third, the government provides enough land (relocation sites) for the community, which can be used as a place of residence accompanied by sufficient land and in one location. Fourth, in each of its policies, the government pays attention to and is able to maintain the capital owned by the community, such as between social capital (networking). Radicalization of youth leading to violent extremism in the form of terrorism is an urgent problem considering the rise of young people joining extremist groups of different ideologies. Previous research on the impact of counter-terrorism polices has highlighted negative outcomes such as stigmatizing minority groups. Drawing on qualitative research conducted under the PROTON project (2016–2019) by CREA-UB on the social and ethical impact of counter-terrorism policies in six EU countries, the present article presents and discusses the ways in which actions characterized by creating spaces for dialogue at the grassroots level are contributing to prevent youth violent radicalization. The results highlight four core elements underlying these spaces for dialogue: providing guidance to be safe in the exploration of extremist messages and violent radicalization; the rejection of violence; that dialogue is egalitarian; and that relationships are built on trust so that adolescents and young adults feel confident to raise their doubts. If taken into account, these elements can serve to elaborate dialogic evidence-based policies. The policies which include a dialogue between the scientific evidence and the people affected by them once implemented, achieve positive social impact.

AbstractThe current investigation examined if changes in youth internalizing problems as a result of a family group cognitive behavioral (FGCB) preventive intervention for families with a parent with a history of depression had a cascade effect on youth social problems over 24 months and the bidirectional nature of these effects. One hundred eighty families with a parent with a history of major depressive disorder (Mage = 41.96; 88.9% mothers) and a youth age 9 to 15 years (49.4% females;Mage = 11.46) participated. Findings from a panel model indicated that, compared to a minimum intervention condition, the FGCB intervention significantly reduced youth internalizing problems at 12 months that in turn were associated with lower levels of social problems at 18 months. Similarly, the FGCB intervention reduced internalizing problems at 18 months, which were associated with fewer social problems at 24 months. Changes in social problems were not related to reductions in subsequent internalizing problems. The findings suggest that reductions in youth internalizing problems can lead to lower levels of social problems. Youth social problems are difficult to change; therefore, targeting internalizing problems may be an effective way to reduce the social problems of children of parents with a history of depression.
