Development and Evaluation of a Device for Inducing Kinesthetic Illusion of Dual Joint Movements

If kinesthetic sensation can be generated using artificial means, we can experience dynamic sensations in the virtual reality space. Subsequently, it can be used as an instruction tool for rehabilitation. By means of kinesthetic illusion, it is possible to create kinesthetic sensation. In this study, we developed an interface device that creates kinesthetic illusions by inducing vibrations in muscle tendons that coordinate dual joint movements. First, we produced a vibrating device using four vibrators. The rotation of motors moving eccentric weights generated the vibrations. Each motor was independently controlled using specially developed software. Second, we produced vibrator fixation structures, which firmly attached the vibrators to the muscle tendons. Using these structures, the vibrators were maintained in position and allowed to transmit forces to the muscle tendons. Furthermore, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the performance of the kinesthetic illusion device. Accordingly, we created the kinesthetic illusion of drawing figures on a horizontal surface by inducing vibrations in muscle tendons that contribute to dual joint movements. The results demonstrated that, by using this device, it was possible to induce kinesthetic illusions of dual joint movements.

Two-handed interactions are efficient to design a three dimensional (3D) object, hence a two-handed spatial interface device must facilitate such a design process in a virtual environment. In order to realize a virtual environment where an operator can use his/her both hands efficiently, it is necessary to implement a virtual reality system that is suitable to human's ability of sensory integration. We can unconsciously integrate many kinds of sensory information, e.g. visual and kinesthetic sensation. In this paper, we investigate human’s ability of sensory integration between visual sensation and kinesthesis of hands when they are in disagreement spatially, by changing the spatial relation among the operator, a visual display, and a 3D spatial interface device. Then, we implement a virtual reality system for two-handed interactions that can facilitate human’s smooth sensory integration.

the off-the-shelf virtual reality community is well aware of the wide variety of inexpensive and robust tracking and display technologies that have emerged from the entertainment industry in recent years. Alongside these developments, there has also been a vast improvement in the accessibility and usability of hobbyist-grade electronics components, which make incorporating lower-level sensing and actuation components into virtual reality systems feasible for even novices in electronics. Combined, these developments have formed the foundation for a renaissance of do-it-yourself interface device prototyping. Development of novel virtual reality interface devices has been simplified to the point that it can be commonplace in virtual reality system design, rather than an exception. This article discusses a variety of ways in which off-the-shelf electronics and devices can be leveraged and combined in virtual reality experiences, and the knowledge required to begin exploring possibilities, through case studies in prototyping virtual reality experiences.

The role of top-down processing on the horizontal-vertical line length illusion was examined by means of an ambiguous room with dual visual verticals. In one of the test conditions, the subjects were cued to one of the two verticals and were instructed to cognitively reassign the apparent vertical to the cued orientation. When they have mentally adjusted their perception, two lines in a plus sign configuration appeared and the subjects had to evaluate which line was longer. The results showed that the line length appeared longer when it was aligned with the direction of the vertical currently perceived by the subject. This study provides a demonstration that top-down processing influences lower level visual processing mechanisms. In another test condition, the subjects had all perceptual cues available and the influence was even stronger.

Fragestellung: Die dieser Untersuchung zugrunde liegende Frage war, ob das angewandte Ausbildungskonzept geeignet war, um am Beispiel der Einführung der laparoskopischen Cholezystektomie eine neue Operationsmethode in einer universitären Ausbildungsklinik mit einer grossen Anzahl Chirurgen zu etablieren. Patienten und Methodik: Seit Einführung der ersten laparoskopischen Cholezystektomie wurden alle Cholezystektomien während zwei Jahren (Mai 1990 bis Mai 1992) prospektiv erfasst. Ein Ausbildungskonzept wurde gewählt, bei dem jeweils ein Operateur durch einen Tutor geschult wurde und so 15 konsekutive Eingriffe durchführte, um dann die Technik einem weiteren auszubildenden Chirurgen zu instruieren. Resultate: In zwei Jahren wurden 355 Patienten cholezystektomiert. 60% der Operationen wurden laparoskopisch durchgeführt oder begonnen. 40% der Operationen wurden offen durchgeführt. In den ersten zwei Jahren konnten 13 Operateure (durchschnittlich 16 Operationen / Operateur , range 1 - 60) in die neue Technik eingeführt werden. Es traten keine schweren Komplikationen, insbesondere keine Gallenwegsverletzungen in dieser Einführungsphase auf. Diskussion: In der Literatur wird dieses Vorgehen bei der Einführungsphase seit 1992 wiederholt vorgestellt, diskutiert und empfohlen. Zwischenzeitlich gibt es Richtlinien von Fachgesellschaften und nationalen Institutionen, welche die Ausbildung zur Ausführung neuer chirurgischer Techniken reglementieren. In den letzten Jahren verlagern sich die ersten Ausbildungsschritte in Richtung Trainingskurse an skill-stations und virtual reality Trainer. Schlussfolgerung: Das beschriebene Ausbildungskonzept bewährte sich in der Einführungsphase der laparoskopischen Cholezystektomie zu Beginn der 90er-Jahre.
