Forests are natural resources that provide double benefits, direct and indirect benefits. The direct benefit of forest is as a source of various types of goods, such as woods, saps, barks, leaves, roots, fruits, and flowers that can be used directly by humans or become raw materials for various industries. The special-purpose forest of Tumbang Nusa is a secondary peat swamp forest. Peat swamp forest is a forest formation quite widespread in Indonesia. The term arises because swamp forest and peat forest are basically always adjacent and often do not have clear boundaries that are so-called peat swamp forests. The purpose of this study was to find out the structure and species composition (species dominance, species diversity, species richness and species evenness) of secondary peat swamp forest vegetation in special-purpose forest of Tumbang Nusa, Jabiren Raya Subdistrict, Central Kalimantan Province. The results of the study showed that the vegetation structure by diameter classes was dominated by the vegetation with small diameter (0-9 cm) and by height classes was dominated by the vegetation with low height-class (0-5 m). The diversity of vegetation in the study plots showed that there were 42 species of vegetation consisting of 24 families, and the most common species found were the family of Lauraceae (5 species), Dipterocarpaceae (4 species), Myristicaceae, Myrtaceae and Guttiferae (3 species), Podocarpaceae, Apocynaceae, Ebenaceae, Moraceae and Annonaceae (2 species), and a few other family (one species of each). The species diversity at seedling and sapling stages was moderate (H' ≥ 2 and < 3) while the diversity at pole and tree stages was low (H' < 2). The values of species richness index at seedling, sapling and pole stages were moderate (R = 3.5 - 5.0) while at the tree stage was relatively low (R > 3.5). The species evenness index at seedling and sapling stages was high (E > 0.6) while at the pole and tree stages moderate (E = 0.3 to 0.6).

Reinwardtia 19(1): 27‒54. ‒‒ Most peat swamp forest has been degraded. This has resulted in decline of its biodiversity. The objective of this study was to identify the composition, diversity, and plants used by local people in Bagantung swamp forest. The study was conducted on degraded peat swamp forest area in Bagantung, Mantangai Sub-District, Kapuas District, Central Kalimantan Province. The Shannon-Wiener (H’) and the Importance Value (IV) indices were used for analyzing the species diversity and the species importance across a number of forest plots. Useful tree species were identified by interviewing local villagers. There were 2,562 individual plants in 32 plots (each plot 20 m × 20 m). We identified 100 tree species and 16 non-tree species, from 74 genera, and 46 families. Myrtaceae, Sapotaceae, Ebenaceae, Dipterocarpaceae and Clusiaceae were the most dominant families. Large tree (H’=1.46) and small tree diversity was similar (H’=1.75). In both small and large tree size classes Calophyllum nodusum was the most dominant species. There were 16 tree species and two non-tree species used by local people for house and boat construction, furniture, handicrafts, medicine, and insect repellent.

The activities of the community around the peat swamp forest cause disruption of the ecosystem from the sustainability of the forest area's resources. Land clearing and peatland fires also affect the presence of ferns. The new environmental conditions due to changes in land cover cause ferns to be affected by these changes. Kuala Dua Village Kubu Raya Regency has secondary peat swamp forest and open peat land due to fires 3-4 years earlier so it is overgrown with a variety of new types of flora, one of which is a type of fern. The objective of the study is to describe species diversity of ferns and their site conditions in secondary peat swamp forests and open peatlands of Kuala Dua Village, Kubu Raya District. This research was conducted with survey method using multiple plot samples. The plots determination was done by purposive sampling which was taken place on the site where there were many species of ferns land. Three plots were on each land covered condition with a plot size of 5 m x 5 m that divided into 25 of a 1 m x 1 m sub plots. The results show that 5 species of ferns found in peat swamp forest and 4 species of ferns were found on open peatlands. The species that has the highest INP value in the forest was Asplenium belangeri and the species that has the INP value in open peatland was Nephrolefis falcata. Dominant Index, Spesies Diversity Index and Spesies Abudance Index were 0,12 and 0,18; 0,30 and 0,36; 0,51 and 0,52 on the forest and open peatland respectively. The Similarity Index value (IS) of ferns in secondary peat swamp forest and open peatland is 44%. The study shows dissimility of species fern in peat swamp forests and open peatlands.Keywords: Open peatland, Pteridophyta, secondary peat swamp forest

Until now the raw material of wood especially Gelam (<em>Melaleuca cajuputi</em>) available for supporting the construction of housing and other infrastructures is increasingly large in Indonesia. On the Island of Borneo that partly consists of swamps needs Gelam very large and continuous, particularly for residential development. However, areas of peat swamp forest habitat of this plant from year to year are degradation and shrinkage. This situation is a very big influence on the population of Gelam, while the management and timber trade systems are not well regulated. This study aims to analyze the management and timber trade systems of Gelam particularly in South Kalimantan to provide input to the policy holder in the preservation of Gelam. The method was used a field survey and interviews with traders and policy holders related regulations. The results showed in South Kalimantan the potency of Gelam is only 2,9-7,1 m3/ha and decreasing yearly. Normally Gelam with a diameter &lt;4 cm have been cut down, as well as &gt; 30 cm. These dimensions should not be cut because of &lt;4 cm too young and &gt; 30 cm can be used as seed sources. Gelam derived from peat swamp forest, which mostly comes from the Batola District and some came from Kapuas District of Central Kalimantan. Distributions of Gelam were starting gatherers logging in the forest then sold to small gatherers, next to the large gatherers and distributed to all districts/cities in South Kalimantan, wood processing industries, and some of them were sent to Java. The silviculture system of Gelam was using selective cutting. Classification of wood sizes traded by the diameter divided into 3-4cm, 5-6cm, 7-8cm, 9-10cm, 11-12cm, 13-14cm, 15-19cm and &gt; 20cm to 4m long. Its use consists of a small diameter (3-10cm) for foundry building and firewood, while the large diameter (10-20cm) for the construction of houses in swampy areas, and waste as well as the stems are bent and deformed used for firewood. Until now Gelam becomes into the business community and potential sources of local government revenue if managed properly. However, due to the rules of management and administration in South Kalimantan was not going well, thus threatening the sustainability especially with the growing extent of peat lands being converted into palm oil plantations.

In order to describe the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) status of plants growing on peat soil, a study was carried out in the peat swamp forest of Setia Alam Jaya in Sebangau, Central Kalimantan. Out of 146 plant root samples belonging to 48 plant species from 25 families examined, all plants colonized by VAM fungi namely 14 (29.2 percent) high level, 32 (66.7 percent) medium level, and 2 (4.1 percent) low level respectively.
