ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to analyze the Technical Efficiency of a sample of 13 container ports of Latin America and the Caribbean, which generated movements of more than one million TEUs in the period 2012-2018, according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). In the first stage, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used to obtain the Technical Efficiency, with an output-oriented option: Variable Return Scale (BCC). In a second stage, the bootstrap method has been applied in order to determine efficiency rankings of Latin America and the Caribbean container ports. The main contribution of this article is the application of DEA and Bootstrap models in the study of operational efficiency of the main container terminals in Latin America and the Caribbean. The techniques presented manage to determine, with a high degree of precision, the role played by the main container traffic variables in the operational efficiency of their terminals. They represent a valuable tool for the analysis of the dimensioning of the infrastructures of the ports studied. The models developed in this work have been evaluated through a database obtained from the public entities that manage these ports in Latin America and the Caribbean, but they can be applied in other ports of different countries and/or commercial areas that share the same typology of traffic and characteristics. The corrected efficiency results obtained by the Bootstrap BCC Output-oriented methodology denote some homogeneity in two large groups of ports. The ports with corrected efficiency values above 85%, and low differences between the values obtained in the two methodologies, should develop an analysis of their infrastructures in the short and medium-term. A second group consisting of Cartagena, Freeport, Lazaro Cardenas, San Antonio and Buenos Aires ports, obtain low efficiency values of less than 65% and therefore, should develop a traffic strategy analysis to attract new traffic in order to be efficient. With the implementation of new round electricity system reform in China, the provincial electricity grid enterprises (EGEs) of China should focus on improving their operational efficiency to adapt to the increasingly fierce market competition and satisfy the requirements of the electricity industry reform. Therefore, it is essential to conduct operational efficiency evaluation on provincial EGEs. While considering the influences of exterior environmental variables on the operational efficiency of provincial EGEs, a three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology is first utilized to accurately assess the real operational efficiency of provincial EGEs excluding the exterior environmental values and statistical noise. The three-stage DEA model takes the amount of employees, the fixed assets investment, the 110 kV and below distribution line length, and the 110 kV and below transformer capacity as input variables and the electricity sales amount, the amount of consumers, and the line loss rate as output variables. The regression results of the stochastic frontier analysis model indicate that the operational efficiencies of provincial EGEs are significantly affected by exterior environmental variables. Results of the three-stage DEA model imply that the exterior environmental values and statistical noise result in the overestimation of operational efficiency of provincial EGEs, and the exclusion of exterior environmental values and statistical noise has provincial-EGE-specific influences. Furthermore, 26 provincial EGEs are divided into four categories to better understand the differences of operational efficiencies before and after the exclusion of exterior environmental values and statistical noise.

The overall development of business operations logistics activities becomes more important for firms with the globalization of economy and therefore performance measurement being equally important. In order to break monopolistic control of Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Indian Railways entered for competition in the container segment in January 2006 through private-public participation for customer centric competitiveness. The purpose of this book chapter is to benchmark the performance indicators in CONCOR. A case study has been conducted employing basic and super-efficiency models of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) on secondary data of CONCOR, Adani and Gateway container terminals from 1995-96 till 2010-11 for performance evaluation within CONCOR and comparative analysis for three organizations from 2005-06 till 2010-11. The exercise identified efficiency trends fluctuating between 87.5% to 1000% within CONCOR owing to haphazard infrastructure developed while comparison with private players showed 38.31% to 77.59% efficiency fluctuation concurrent to licensing policy norms.

The wood industry, as a traditional sector, represents a very important part of the economy in terms of ensuring a sustainable development of society and transition to a low-carbon society in both countries studied, Slovenia and Croatia. For its further development, it is crucial to know the current position of the industry. The best way to achieve this is an analysis of financial data and international comparative evaluation of its operational efficiency. The aim of the research is to compare the relative efficiency of the wood industry using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MI), focusing on the Slovenian and Croatian wood industry sectors (C16 and C31) for a recent five-year period (from 2013-2017). With this purpose, the combined measure DEA/MI was applied. The analysis includes only the highest rated companies with more than fi ve employees, divided into 12 clusters regarding the company size. As a result, it was established that clusters CRO-C31- micro, CRO-C16-micro and SI-C16-larger have the highest operational efficiency, due to the effects of different financial indicators, especially activity and liquidity ratios. In general, within the grouped clusters regarding country and subsector, groups SI-C16 and CRO-C31 achieve the highest values for the average of weighted score of efficiency, while CRO-C16 achieves the lowest values.

Abstract The article presents a method for evaluating the efficiency of port container terminals. The research was conducted for nine European terminals which use different handling technologies. The terminals have been divided due to the level of automation of transport processes. In the efficiency research DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) method is applied, that was previously used in studies of the relative productivity in the industry. This method allows you to multicriteria process analysis based on the properly selected production system model processing input parameters on output. Conclusions from analysis can be a ground for making a decision on organizational or investment issues.
