The purpose of this study is to reveal the representation of women workers in newspaper news discourse that follows the nationalist-secular ideology and the Islamic ideology perspectives. The method of this research is a qualitative content analysis that views the text as a symbolic message and it requires interpretation according to the context. Complementing the research method, a critical discourse analysis approach is also used. The subjects of this research are female workers found in newspaper news discourse that carries the values of Islamic ideology and newspapers that carry nationalist-secular ideology. Data were analyzed through critical discourse analysis techniques in the following steps: (a) description; (b) interpretation; and (c) explanation. This research still considers checking the reliability and the validity. Data analysis is also complemented by confirmation of linguists and peers (triangulation of sources). The main findings of this study show that the practice of discourse in the RM newspaper which follows the nationalist-secular ideology perspective represents marginal women. By the RM newspaper, the representation is used as a plea for the actions and trait of male actors or employers. The motive revealed from this phenomenon is to follow the demand of the market. On the other hand, the newspaper R, which tends to follow Islamic ideology perspective, represents the motive of advocacy for women workers. This is the implication of the values of Islamic ideology carried out by the R newspaper as mentioned in its vision and mission. The findings are also the antithesis of the view that Islam isolates women in the social sphere of society.

ABSTRACT In this paper, an expanded version of the visual social actor network (van Leeuwen 2008) is suggested in integration with the classification of fields proposed by Martin (1992). In the context of multimodal critical discourse analysis, such network has provided a template for the discussion of the data aiming to reveal and interrogate the construal of women’s agency in the introductory part of the first film Sex and the City (2008). Overall results place women’s actions mostly in the private sphere but also reveal instances of gender performativity (Butler 1990) that question social norms for women mainly imposed by the media.

Discourses of war are disseminated and legitimised not only through speeches and written texts, but through visual semiotic resources. One important vehicle for this has been the war monument. Evidence shows that from WW1 in Europe and the US monuments have been used systematically by authorities to recontextualise the realities of war and soldiery, suppressing much of what comprises war, avoiding any critical stance, while fostering celebratory discourses of nation, protection and noble sacrifice. The representation of women on the war monument has been particularly important in this recontexualisation. Using Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the discourses realised by British war monuments, this paper shows that while much of the way women participate in and experience war has been suppressed on war monuments. Their representation has been a key part of the legitimation of one particular discourse of war, a representation that has helped to sideline other possible discourse in British society and which is still used in the commemoration of the death of ‘our boys’ — such as the young men killed in Afghanistan.

The focus of this paper is the representation of women on Banjarmasin Post’s humourcolumn, “Si Palui,” whose stories are either about daily lives or domestic issues. On thelatter topic, the theme which regularly appears is marital problems such as poligamy, divorce, and sexuality. On this column, women characters are merely supporting castsand, hence, are subordinated. This research applies the critical language element of themicro level of Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis in order to understandthe representation issues through language: semantics, syntax, and lexycon. Th resultshows that the representation of women on Si Palui is categorized into three: as widows, wives, and other kinds of women. The widows are illustrated as having plumpy bodyand always expecting to get married, though the representation emphasizes on the kindof flirtious widows adored by men. The wives are represented as the sexual objects oftheir husband. Meanwhile other kinds of women, such as mother-in-laws, are fussy, andsingle women are agressive.AbstrakTulisan ini berfokus untuk melihat representasi perempuan dalam kolom humorberbahasa Banjar, Si Palui di Banjarmasin Post.
