<p><strong>OBJECTIVES:</strong> To estimate the prevalence of emergency cases reporting to Primary Health Care centers (PHC), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and to explore the barriers facing PHC physicians when dealing with such emergency cases.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>METHODS:</strong> A cross-sectional analytic study, where all physicians working in the PHC of the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Jeddah; were invited to participate (n=247). The study period was from July 2013 till December 2013. Data were collected through two sources. 1- A self-administered questionnaire used to determine the physicians’ perceived competence when dealing with emergency cases. 2- A structured observation sheet used to evaluate availability of equipment, drugs, ambulances and other supporting facilities required to deal with emergency cases.</p><p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> The response rate was 83.4%. The physicians’ age ranged between 25 and 60 years with a mean ±SD of 34.4±7.5 years. Majority of them (83.5%) did not attend ATLS courses at all whereas 60.7% never attended ACLS courses. The majority (97.1%) had however attended BLS courses. Physicians in the age group 36-45 years, non-Saudi, those who had SBFM, those who reported experience in working in emergency departments and physicians who reported more working years in PHCCs (&gt;5 years) had a significant higher score of perceived level of competence in performing emergency skill scale than others (P&lt;0.05). The prevalence of emergency cases attending PHC in Jeddah (2013) was 5.2%.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> Emergency services at PHC in Jeddah are functioning reasonably well, but require fine tuning of services and an upgrade in their quality.</p>

Many physicians confuse laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR) with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), leading to misdiagnosis of these two diseases. LPR is a common condition among the population, and physicians should be aware of it to save time, effort, resources, and money. The key objective of the study is to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of primary care physicians with respect to LPR and its management and presentation in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A quantitative observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the primary health care centers in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The sample included willing respondents among the primary health care physicians in these health care centers. Written consent was obtained from each participant before including their data in the study. The data were tabulated and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: The sample consisted of 109 clinicians from different specialties. The average age of the respondents was 44.3 years (standard deviation [SD]: 9.35 years, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 35.7, 52.9) with an average experience of 12.94 years (SD: 8.58 years, 95% CI: 11.3, 14.6). Forty-six percent (46.8%) of the respondents did not agree that there is an association between sinusitis and LPR.  About (43.11%) of clinicians said that they always educate patients about LPR, compared to (24.77%) of the clinicians who said that they do not educate patients about LPR. Conclusions: Clinicians in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia have relatively good knowledge, attitudes, and practices with regard to LPR.

Aim of Study: To identify difficulties and barriers facing primary health care physicians in rural areas of Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at primary healthcare centers (PHCCs) belonging to the Saudi Ministry of Health, in rural areas of Aseer Region. A total of 134 physicians participated in the study. A validated study questionnaire was adapted and used for data collection. Results: Female physicians constituted 43.3% of respondents, age of 58.2% was 30-35 years, (Mean±SD: 32.8 ± 7.0 years), 54.5% were married, the salary of 76.1% was <10,000 SR, and the place of residence of 43.3% was in urban areas. Only 34.3% had opportunities for on-the-job continuing medical education, 33.6% were satisfied with medical equipment and resources, and 50% were dissatisfied with their salary. Internet service was present for 83.6% of participants. The social life of 83.6% was negatively affected, and 16.4% were exposed to violence at the workplace. Most participants had a favorable attitude toward working in rural areas, mainly in the form of professional satisfaction, pursuing postgraduate academic studies, building confidence as a clinician and provision of opportunities to upgrade knowledge and skills. Participants were less satisfied regarding several social factors, such as internet connectivity, isolation from family and relatives; received support from rural people, difficult schooling for children, but were not satisfied regarding PHCC infrastructure, their residential facilities, or earning more money. Conclusion: Serving within the rural healthcare system provides young physicians with an opportunity to build up their experience and to increase their confidence as physicians. However, important difficulties that they face are mainly social and financial. Hence, creating a health policy to safeguard the serving physicians’ career and providing facilities to promote personal and social well-being needs to be considered. Abstract Background: Travel has become an integral part of Saudi life. People with diabetes face many challenges while travelling that can have detrimental effects on glycaemic control. However, no previous studies have investigated pre-travel counselling in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of primary health care (PHC) physicians regarding pre-travel counselling for patients with type 2 diabetes.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in PHC centres under the Ministry of Health in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the period 2018-2019. A cluster multistage random sampling technique was used to recruit physicians. The data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire.Results: Three hundred and eighty-five primary health care physicians were recruited. This study showed that more than half (57.9%) of PHC physicians had poor knowledge scores. Additionally, the following characteristics were significantly associated with poor knowledge: being younger in age, being male, being Saudi, being a general practitioner, and having limited (0-5 years) experience. A total of 183 (47.5%) subjects showed disagreement attitudes towards the importance of pre-travel counselling among patients with diabetes. Furthermore, these disagreement attitudes were significantly associated with being older and having more years of experience. The majority (62.6%) of the physicians had poor practice scores. Poor practices were detected among physicians who were younger, male, and Saudi and who had a general practitioner specialty and degree.Conclusions: It could be concluded that a gap was detected in the knowledge and practices of primary health care physicians regarding pre-travel counselling for people with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is necessary to create easily accessible travel medicine education programmes for Saudi PHC providers to improve the management of travellers with diabetes.Trial registrationNot applicable
