The prevalence of malnutrition is high in Rwanda especially in Ruhango District of Southern Province (23.5% in 2009). The contribution of soybean ( Glycine max L) , which is an important source of high quality and inexpensive protein and oil, to improvement of nutritional status of malnourished children is unclear. Although a lot of research has been done on the production of soybean in Rwanda, research on soybean in the diet to improve the nutritional status of malnourished children has not been done. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of soybean flour and soybean milk on the nutritional status of malnourished children under the age of five. The objective was to determine the weight gain due to each treatment in comparison with the control group. This study was conducted in Ruhango District of Southern Province Rwanda. A survey was conducted where households growing and utilizing soybean were identified and anthropometric measurements were ta ken on 294 children to select malnourished children. Thirty malnourished children participate in the intervention which lasted three months. One cup (250ml) of soybean milk was supplemented to ten children per day. An equal number was supplemented with 25g of soybean flour in soup (250ml). The caregivers of the ten children in the control group received nutrition education together with the two treatment groups. Anthropometric measurements were taken every month and entered in WHO ANTHRO software. Data was analyzed by regression models using G enStat 14th edition and the magnitude of weight gain due to each of the treatments was predicted at 5% level of significance. A linear mixed model was used to estimate and compare weight gain among children fed on soybean milk and soybean flour supplement in comparison with the control group. Soybean products were found to affect weight gain of children (P = 0.04). The mean weight gain was 0.9 (±0.5 ) kg within three months of intervention. The difference in weight gain between t he two treatment groups was not significant. To improve the nutritional status o f malnourished children under five years further intervention is needed in terms of education and training on soybean based diet formulation.

Malnutrition affects virtually all organ systems, and malnourished children are more prone to infections. These children have dysbiosis, but probiotics can restore the disrupted gut microbiome. We investigated the protective effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in malnourished children in terms of incidence of infection, and anthropometric and metabolic parameters. 50 intervention and 50 control patients, aged 6 months to 5 years, with body weight and height below -2 SD, were randomly and prospectively recruited. The controls received a calorie and protein-appropriate diet for 3 months, while the study group additionally received approximately 109 L. rhamnosus GG for 3 months. Infection episodes and nutritional status were compared between the groups. 38 intervention, 33 control patients completed the study and the two groups were similar at baseline. The study group had fewer upper respiratory tract infections and gastroenteritis episodes at each month and at the end of the study. Children in the study group experienced fewer total upper respiratory infections and urinary tract infections. Hospitalisation was more frequent in the control group during the third month and at the end of the study. Total infection numbers were higher in the control group at each month and at the end of the study (P<0.001 for each). Increments in body mass index (BMI) and BMI Z-scores were more pronounced in the study group (P=0.008 and P=0.02, respectively). Daily prophylactic use of L. rhamnosus GG at 109 bacteria in malnourished children prevents most infections and improves nutritional status when used together with appropriate diet.

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the effectiveness of a vitamin-fortified maize meal to improve the nutritional status of 1–3-year-old malnourished African children.DesignA randomised parallel intervention study was used in which 21 experimental children and their families received maize meal fortified with vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin and pyridoxine, while 23 control children and their families received unfortified maize meal. The maize meal was provided for 12 months to replace the maize meal habitually consumed by these households.MethodsSixty undernourished African children with height-for-age or weight-for-age below the 5th percentile of the National Center for Health Statistics' criteria and aged 1–3 years were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. Baseline measurements included demographic, socio-economic and dietary data, as well as height, weight, haemoglobin, haematocrit, serum retinol and retinol-binding protein (RBP). Anthropometric, blood and serum variables were measured again after 12 months of intervention. Complete baseline measurements were available for 44 children and end data for only 36. Changes in these variables from baseline to end within and between groups were assessed for significance with paired t-tests, t-tests and analysis of variances using the SPSS program, controlling for expected weight gain in this age group over 12 months. Relationships between changes in variables were examined by calculating correlation coefficients.ResultsThe children in the experimental group had a significantly (P≤0.05) higher increase in body weight than control children (4.6 kg vs. 2.0 kg) and both groups had significant (P≤0.05) but similar increases in height. The children in the experimental group showed non-significant increases in haemoglobin and serum retinol, while the control children had a significant (P = 0.007) decrease in RBP. The change in serum retinol showed a significant correlation with baseline retinol (P = 0.014), RBP (P = 0.007) and weight (P = 0.029), as well as with changes in haemoglobin (P = 0.029).ConclusionDespite a small sample size, this study showed positive effects of a vitamin-fortified maize meal on weight gain and some variables of vitamin A status in 1–3-year-old African children. The study confirmed the relationship between vitamin A and iron status. The results suggest that fortification of maize meal would be an effective strategy to address micronutrient deficiencies in small children in South Africa.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of laserpuncture shoot towards the growth rate of male Bali cattle. This reasearch was done in July until August 2018 in Cendono Village, Pasuruan. This research uses 18 samples with completely randomized design as a research methods. This research used 18 male Bali cattle aged 2 – 2.5 year. This research divided by 3 groups are the control group (P0, which is without laserpuncture shooting) and two treatment groups (P1, which is laserpuncture shooting with 0.5 joule of doses and P2, which is laserpuncture shooting with 0.5 joule of doses and bioplus probiotic). Laserpuncture shooting already done for 6 weeks with 6 days of interval. The result is weight of cuttle is increasing and it is known from digital weight scales. The data is analyzed by using ANOVA test and followed by Duncan. The result is laserpuncture shooting at the growth point can be increasing the weight of male Bali cattle. Stastical comparison amon P0, P1 and P2 showed there were significant difference on growth rate (p<0.05). The result showed that induction of laserpuncture and bioplus probiotic has effect for growth gain rate of male Bali cattle. The optimal rate of weight gain occured in the second week with laserpuncture induction at dose of 0.5 joule and the six week with laserpuncture induction at dose of 0.5 joule and bioplus probiotic.

The aim of this study is to investigate the antitumor activity of Plantago major L. extract in Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) bearing Balb/C mice in vivo. Thirty male Balb/C mice were divided into 5 groups: 3 treatment groups and 2 control groups (6 per group). Treatment groups and the negative control group were injected with EAT (1 × 106 cells) intraperitoneally to develop ascites tumor. P. major L. extract (1%, 2% and 3% concentration extracts, 0.1 ml/day/mouse) were given p.o. for 10 alternate days. The control group was treated with 0.9% NaCl solution (0.1 ml/day/mouse). The changes of body weight in animals were recorded. On the 11th day, all of the mice were sacrified and their tissues were stained with haematoxylen and eosin for pathological studies. Body weights of in 3 treatment groups and the negative control group were elevated because of tumor burden. The maximal weight gain was recorded in the negative control group and the minimal weight gain was recorded in Group I. Pathological studies showed that P. major L. extract (especially 1% concentration) has inhibitive effect on EAT. P. major has an inhibitory effect on EAT in a dose dependent manner.

Abstract Background: Javanese people, especially those living in the city of Solo, try to overcome the difficulty of eating children by providing special herbal medicine for children which is better known as jamu cekok. It’s believed to have efficacy as a child's appetite stimulant, as a herb that can kill irritating worms in the body of a child. This study aimed to determine the effect of herbal medicine on weight gain and the amount of food consumed by mice. Method: This research design usedpre clinicaltria in mice. The sample consisted of 60 mice divided into 3 groups, namely 20 control groups, 20 treatment groups I (given 0.25 ml slices) and Treatment Group II (given 0.5 ml of stress). Result: The time for conducting research January 2016 s.d. June 2016 at the GadjahMada University Pharmacy Laboratory Yogjakarta. The results of the analysis of herbal medicine had an effect on the weight gain with the results in the intervention group 1, the consumption of herbal medicine decreased the weight of rats by 24.3%. and in the intervention group 2 decreased the mouse rats by 0.1%. Choking affects the amount of food left over. Conclusion: The results showed that the mice given 0.25 ml less rest (amounting to 0.570 and this decrease occurred very significantly indicated by the p value <0.000) compared to those given 0.50 ml and control group.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feed supplementation with two prebiotic herbs—Origanum vulgare and Zingiber officinale—on growth performance of broiler chickens. The feed conversion ratio was determined weekly by dividing feed intake by body weight gain. A total of 400 one-day-old broiler chicks were divided into four treatment groups of four replicates of 25 chickens each using a complete design random. The four treatment groups were T0 (control), T1 (0.5% oregano), T2 (0.5% ginger), T3 (0.25% oregano + 0.25% ginger). The chicks were grown to 42 days of age. Weight gain, feed intake, conversion, carcass quality and mortality were determined weekly. Data analysis revealed that during the first 35 days of broiler chicken’s life, none of the dietary interventions had any effect on productive parameters (P > 0.05). However, during the last week of treatment, the oregano and ginger supplementation had a positive effect on weight gain and feed conversion (P < 0.05) than in the control group. In conclusion, the addition of oregano and ginger in the daily food ratio for broiler chickens during the last stage of the productive cycle improved the productive parameters, and carcass characteristics.

Ninety patients with severe anorexia nervosa fulfilling DSM–III–R criteria were assessed in depth in terms of their family developmental psychopathology and then randomly allocated to either one of three treatment groups or to no treatment. In three treatment regimes, a behavioural approach to diet and weight gain was coupled with individual and family psychotherapy directed at the adolescent maturational problems. All three treatment regimes were highly significantly effective at one year in terms of weight gain, return of menstruation, and aspects of social and sexual adjustment. Body weights above those at pubertal onset were achieved for the group mean maximum and one-year follow-up weights for all three treatment groups but not the control group.

OBJECTIVE: To use anthropometric measurements to compare nutritional status in children with neurogenic bladder dysfunction secondary to meningomyelocele who underwent enterocystoplasty and those who did not undergo surgery. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in 20 children, divided into two groups: those who had enterocystoplasty (Group A) and those who did not undergo surgery (Group B), matched for genre and age. Weight, height, arm circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness were the parameters used. Nutritional assessment was determined by calculating the indexes, based on age and genre. Classification was based on the percentile and the results were compared with the reference values. RESULTS: The mean age was 6.41 years in Group A and 6.35 years in Group B. The interval between surgery and evaluation was 11 months. The following measures were found for Group A: 80% of children were eutrophic, a percentage 30% greater than that in Group B; arm muscle circumference was adequate in 40% of patients, a percentage 20% greater than that in Group B; arm muscle area was adequate in 90%, a percentage 30% greater than that in Group B. Values in Group B were as follows: for triceps skinfold thickness, 60% of patients had values above the mean, a percentage 20% greater than that in Group A; for arm fat index, 60% of patients were above the mean value, 40% greater than in Group A. CONCLUSION: Patients who had undergone enterocystoplasty showed better nutritional status, while the control group presented higher fat indexes in anthropometric measures. However, the differences between groups were not statistically significant.

Objective. To determine whether short term supplemantation at two levels (1 or 2 g/kg) of clinoptilolite (CLNP) in the colostrum of dairy calves had any effect on total weight gain (TWG) and mean daily gain of weight (mdwg). Materials and methods. A total of 24 clinically healthy calves without diarrhea were assigned in a subset of three major groups of calves were studied: group I (n=8) received colostrum with clnp at the rate of 1/kg started immediately following calving at 12 and 24 hours, for a total of 2 doses. Group II consisted of calves (n=8) receiving colostrum with clnp at the rate of 2/kg within the same interval as the first experimental group. The last group III, which served as control, received solely colostrum. Results. Group had significant effect on weight (kg) of Holstein calves [twg (mean±SE)- control: 12.66±0.349, group I: 14.73±0.414, group II: 14.19±0.468, p<0.01; mdwg (mean±SE)-control: 0.338±0.0155, group I: 0.396±0.0189, group II: 0.397±0.0196, p<0.05]. There was a significant difference observed for twg (p<0.01) and mdwg (p<0.05) among control group and both clnp treatment groups. Conclusions. The results showed that the addition of both levels of clinoptilolite administration via colostrum appeared to enhance twg and mdwg in newborn calves without having any observable adverse effect.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary addition of male and female Ferula eleaochytris powder (FEP) on growth performance and body components of broilers (Ross-308). Treatment groups were allocated to 5 dietary in which 0 (control), 5 g and 10 g male FEP, 5 g and 10 g female FEP doses per kg commercial broiler diet. In total, 80 male broiler chicks (1-d old) in which 16 animals in each group were used in study. Body weight gain and feed intake were monitored weekly for 6 weeks. Forty two days old broiler chicks were slaughtered to determine the possible changes in body components. The results of the study indicated that FEP had no effect on any parameters. However; the weight of the control group gave higher values than 5 g male Ferula group. In conclusion the measured parameters had no effect between all groups.
