The Swedish Global Health Research Conference held in Stockholm, 18–19 April 2018, convened researchers from across Sweden’s universities to foster collaboration and new research. In response to the theme of the conference, How can Sweden contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals? From research to action, many of the plenary and keynote speakers highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research and teaching. This commentary draws upon a workshop discussing interdisciplinarity, which took place at the conference. Participants included senior professors, lecturers, students and collaborators from the private sector and civil society and we discussed the conceptual and structural challenges that prevent engagement in interdisciplinary research. Although the workshop focused on the Swedish context, issues will be familiar to researchers working outside of Sweden. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals highlight the grand challenges for global society and are intertwined, with progress in one affecting progress in all others. With this starting point, we argue that interdisciplinary research is the way to achieve them. Accordingly, we need to overcome the conceptual and structural challenges that can hinder it. We therefore argue for a paradigm shift of how we value knowledge. We also call for fundamental changes in external and internal (university-level) funding structures, and for the strengthening of interdisciplinary global health teaching.

This work highlights a range of problems related to ensuring sustainable development of post-conflict territories, as well as ways to overcome those through smart specialization approach. The influence of military conflict on Luhansk region's economy structure and economy's pace of development had been determined. Capacities of smart specialization as a contemporary tool meant for intensifying innovative development, structural modernization and improving competitiveness of regions had been studied. While researching regional context the current state and structure of the chemical sector, which is region's traditional specialty, had been analyzed and also its SWOT analysis had been conducted. Potential for diversification, innovative and cross-sectoral evolution of the existing chemical business was discovered. We pay attention to chemical production's digitalization horizons and its integration into rapidly growing region's agricultural sector as part of precision farming concept. The suggested agrochemical ecosystem's model facilitates communications between leading stakeholders, increases efficiency of entrepreneurial discovery process, creates new areas of specialization and new leverage for ensuring region's sustainable development.  Keywords: sustainable development, smart specialization, chemical industry, agriculture, ecosystem, precision farming, Luhansk region

Abstract Tourism is a phenomenon which affects the entire economic and social life, and the implications of its development can be observed in different spheres (economic, psychological, behavioral, and others). Taking into account the simplistic interpretation of the economic development of tourism on the one hand, and social development of tourism on the other hand, it is justified to highlight the problem of so-called “social costs of tourism” as the need for more precise determination of the character of the consequences of its development. In the field of “social costs of tourism” there is a need to the overall tourist development closer approaches and with increased responsibility. This tendency is particularly noticeable in the last decades of the 20th and the early 21st century, when tourism has entered a phase of maturity, which basically requires a change in its interpretation and treatment. The aim of this paper is to identify, evaluate and predict factors that support the sustainable development of tourism in Istria (Croatia). The research used comparative and SWOT analysis, and the results of the research will confirm the application elements of the concept of sustainable development in tourism of Istria, which is introduced with different intensity activities of all stakeholders in the surroundings.

The starting point of the presented research is the theory of destination marketing, in which the concept of destination branding is the key element. Destination branding models include the idea of visual brand identity, which includes the logo as a crucial element. Since the 1980s, the concept of sustainable development has shaped the society and global economy, including tourism. Tourists are increasingly guided by the analysis of the tourist area in terms of the importance of nature and the possibility of spending free time responsibly. They look for a sustainable tourist offer. Therefore, the aim of this work is to evaluate the tourist offers of Polish territorial units in terms of visual message—logo and its content, and to examine whether they comprise design components that reveal the sustainable development of the destination. The research method was content analysis of promotional signs. Sustainable development in tourism focuses on three pillars: nature, responsible tourist activity, and the historical remains protected in a sustainable way. The authors search for such images in the logos. In the conclusion, the authors summarize that elements of nature and historical heritage are strongly present in the logos, which does not mean that the tourist offer is a balanced offer.

In a context of growing customer needs and requirements and worsening environmental issues, the Product Development Process must adapt to these circumstances, promoting measures that enable sustainable development, thus maintaining balance and synergy in the environmental, social and economic spheres. For this, it is essential to carry out the pre-development of business proposals. In this context, adopting a holistic approach that interrelates various areas of literature, brings together contributions in order to lead society to a resilient and resource-efficient environment. Thus, this research promotes the interrelationship between the Product Development Process and the Sustainable Development Goals and aims to realize the pre-development of a product under the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). To meet the proposed objective, the methodology adopted consists of the adaptation of a pre-development model, selected through bibliographic analysis. The results of this research present the pre-development of a product willing to meet the goals of SDG 6 (drinking water and sanitation) and SDG 7 (accessible and clean energy). It highlights the use of tools to structure and ensure the assertiveness of the proposal, such as IDEF0, SWOT analysis and FMEA.

The study deals with an integral assessment of hydromorphological and geoecological conditions of the Hukiv (flatland type of river), Dereluy (foothill type of river), and Vyzhenka (mountainous type of river) river basin systems (Figure 1). The indicators characterizing the river basin in the best way as a holistic system, the channel, floodplain, and watershed altogether, in natural reference conditions and in terms of human economic activity are addressed. The assessment hydromorphological test and geoecological monitoring of small rivers (SWOT-analysis) in accordance with the developed universal algorithm for hydromorphological assessment of small river basins for the sustainable development goals are generated and fulfilled. Interpretation maps for the sustainable development of the Hukiv, Dereluy and Vyzhenka rivers are created. The practical importance and relevance concerns the potential application of the proposed monitoring and the algorithm to solve methodological and applied problems related to the functioning of the systems “basin–river–human” and “basin–river–riverbed” in terms of modern human activity and needs; the need to modify consumer-type stereotypes for the use of natural resources, as well as to provide recommendations for enhancing the resource-efficient and sustainable activities in basin systems and small rivers.

The efficient evaluation of the transport sector for the implementation of sustainable mobility solutions is a crucial challenge for governments and decisionmakers for strategically reducing the negative economic, social, and environmental impacts of transport. Current research trends on transport macromanagement indicate a lack of integrative and comprehensive approaches to mitigating transport sustainability parameters. Thus, a holistic perspective on transport macromanagement is deemed necessary for supporting the transition towards a more sustainable approach to transport macroplanning. This paper contributes to the development of transport macromanagement by offering insights, tools, and strategies for contemporary sustainable transitions in the transport sector. A methodology for sustainable and multimodal/cross-border passenger services for the Italy-Croatia cross-border area, with a systematic development cycle composed of six interconnected steps for fostering stakeholder cooperation, is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, a methodological framework, a SWOT analysis, and a gap analysis on the function of defining port improvement for the action plan are elaborated in this study. The study analysis is based on the international passenger terminal ports in a passenger liner service by using a survey analysis conducted among the port authorities in the cross-border area. Moreover, the main aim of the methodology is to provide a holistic framework for the sustainable development of a complex and multilayered transport environment that encompasses a multiplicity of various stakeholders.
