In this paper, thermal modeling of a typical rural house in Pakistan has been done using BEopt, to determine the hourly load profile. Using the load data, the design of a stand-alone PV system has been completed using HOMER Pro. The designed system consists of a 5.8 kW PV with eight batteries of 12 V, 255 Ah, and a 1.4 kW inverter. The system analyses show that such system can support mainly lighting and appliance load in a rural house. The dynamic model of the designed system has been simulated in MATLAB-Simulink. Perturbation and observation-based algorithm has been used for maximum power extraction from PV. Simulation results indicate that the system can provide a stable voltage and frequency for the domestic load. The method and analysis presented here can be used for the PV system design for other parts of the world.

The stratospheric airship is a kind of aircraft that completely relies on the cycle of photovoltaic energy systems to achieve long duration flight. The accurate estimation of the operating temperature of solar cell modules on stratospheric airship is extremely important for the design of photovoltaics system (PV system), the output power calculation of PV system, and the calculation of energy balance. However, the related study has been rarely reported. A support vector machine prediction method based on particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO-SVM) was established to predict the operating temperature of solar cell modules on stratospheric airship. The PSO algorithm was used to dynamically optimize the SVM’s parameters between the operating temperature of the solar cell modules and the measured data such as atmospheric pressure, solar radiation intensity, flight speed, and ambient temperature. The operating temperature data of the two sets of solar cell modules measured in the flight test were used to verify the accuracy of the temperature prediction model, and the prediction results were compared with a back propagation neural network (BPNN) method and the simulation results calculated by COMSOL Multiphysics of COMSOL, Inc., Columbus, MA, USA. The results shown that the PSO-SVM model realized the accurate prediction of the operating temperature of solar cell modules on stratospheric airship, which can guide the design of PV system, the output power calculation of PV system, and the calculation of energy balance.

The Face

The case highlights the key concerns and issues an organization may face if its performance management system (PMS) does not serve its intended purpose and how it can cause demotivation and dissatisfaction among employees and result in an overall decline in organizational performance. It also illustrates how employees’ organizational culture and perception can be as important as the system design and can present challenges even if an elaborate system is planned. In the face of increasing turmoil among employees towards management and the decreasing performance of the organization, TECHNO21 decided to change its current PMS, which seemed a difficult but necessary step to achieve the desired performance levels and overall strategic objectives of the organization.
