AbstractPrescriptive grammar rules are taught in education, generally to ban the use of certain frequently encountered constructions in everyday language. This may lead to hypercorrection, meaning that the prescribed form in one construction is extended to another one in which it is in fact prohibited by prescriptive grammar. We discuss two such cases in Dutch: the hypercorrect use of the comparative particle dan ‘than’ in equative constructions, and the hypercorrect use of the accusative pronoun hen ‘them’ for a dative object. In two experiments, high school students of three educational levels were tested on their use of these hypercorrect forms (nexp1 = 162, nexp2 = 159). Our results indicate an overall large amount of hypercorrection across all levels of education, including pre-university level students who otherwise perform better in constructions targeted by prescriptive grammar rules. We conclude that while teaching prescriptive grammar rules to high school students seems to increase their use of correct forms in certain constructions, this comes at a cost of hypercorrection in others.

The main aim of this paper is to render how university level courses are taught in high school. In fact, we will focus on what styles are used to teach university level courses and illustrate the international contrasts that happen quite frequently. In addition, we will analyse the details of teaching styles that were implemented in the American and the Latvian educational systems. Furthermore, we will discuss what specific teaching styles and innovations work successfully, and what teaching styles and innovations had difficulties and need improvements. In particular, implementing the hands-on teaching and learning styles and repetitive type teaching and learning styles. Moreover, we will also discuss the risk involved with introducing and transforming university level courses and teaching styles with high school students and how to manage these risks.

This research aimed to find out the influence of students’ interests in choosing the mechanical engineering vocational program. The research method used was descriptive quantitative. The population in this study were all Grade X students in Yogyakarta which total number were 180 respondents. The data collecting technique was using questionnaires which then was analyzed using descriptive analysis and regression. The results of this study were (1) Students’ interests in choosing mechanical engineering vocational program was high. (2) There was a positive and significant influence from students’ own understanding, family, school, and society towards students’ interests in choosing the mechanical engineering vocational program, (3) The four variables, together, have positive and significant influences towards vocational high school students’ interests in choosing the mechanical engineering vocational program in Yogyakarta..

 Decisions must be made at the age of 16 and 17 that can have long-lasting effects. High school students are asked to select a specific degree, a university, and sometimes even a specific discipline with very little basis for making the decision. The EXPLORE program was piloted at Dalhousie University in the Summer of 2014 and 2015 to help girls in high school make an informed decision about whether or not to pursue an engineering degree. 10 students signed up each summer to EXPLORE engineering design in a compressed 2-week schedule where they participated in 3 short design projects, culminating in a major project for a client from the community. The girls developed documentation, presentation, leadership, and teamwork skills. They learned CAD software, practiced 3-D printing, and were exposed to robotic programming. They built and tested a design for a community partner and defended the design to a room of people. The students were introduced to visualization techniques, the engineering design process, log books, and other essential components that they would only otherwise encounter during their first year in an engineering program. This paper will document the elements of the course that help the girls make an informed decision about whether or not to pursue engineering from two perspectives: the instructors' and the student's.

The Subject

The evolving high technology industries of recent years have created a growing need for mechanical engineers with nano-scale heat transfer expertise to aid analysis, design, and fabrication of micro devices such as transistors, sensors, actuators, etc. The trends and predictions for activities in this field are even more promising for the next decade. Therefore, the new generation of mechanical engineers should have a reasonable knowledge of the subject to meet the growing demands of the job market. This has created need for inclusion of nano-scale heat transfer topics and experiments in the mechanical engineering curriculum. To meet this demand, we have started a few programs in the mechanical engineering department of the Carnegie Mellon University. We have added nano-scale heat transfer topics, including lab experiments, to some of the existing courses also have developed and offered new specialized courses on the subject. In addition, we have started a summer program for interested high school students entitled “The Exciting World of Thermal Engineering”. The purpose of the latter program has been to expose the student to the subject, and to create/promote enthusiasm for pursuing a thermal engineering career. In this paper we are going to explain the program and to share our observations and experiences.
