Estimating azimuth and slowness from three-component and array stations

Abstract The capabilities of three-component (3-C) and array stations for estimating azimuth and slowness are compared for short-period P-type phases recorded at the NORESS array. For vertical array data, azimuth and slowness estimates are obtained from broadband frequency-wavenumber (f-k) analysis. For 3-C data, polarization analysis is performed. The data processing is automated, using arrival time and dominant frequency information from the NORESS Bulletin. Independent determinations of azimuth and/or slowness, obtained from locations in the NEIS or regional network bulletins, are used as reference estimates. Over 100 events are analyzed, both teleseismic and regional. They were selected from a variety of distances and azimuths, and cover a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). The capability of 3-C stations for azimuth and slowness estimation critically depends on SNR. For SNR below a threshold of ∼2, the scatter in the estimates is very large for both parameters, and the slowness of teleseismic events tends to be overestimated. Also, the results are site-dependent within the NORESS array. The array measurements obtained with the broadband f-k method are not significantly affected by noise at the levels of SNR considered. For events with sufficient SNR, both methods compare well, and only a slightly better performance is observed with the f-k method.

AbstractTrends in the behavior of band gaps in short-period superlattices (SLs) composed of CdO and MgO layers were analyzed experimentally and theoretically for several thicknesses of CdO sublayers. The optical properties of the SLs were investigated by means of transmittance measurements at room temperature in the wavelength range 200–700 nm. The direct band gap of {CdO/MgO} SLs were tuned from 2.6 to 6 eV by varying the thickness of CdO from 1 to 12 monolayers while maintaining the same MgO layer thickness of 4 monolayers. Obtained values of direct and indirect band gaps are higher than those theoretically calculated by an ab initio method, but follow the same trend. X-ray measurements confirmed the presence of a rock salt structure in the SLs. Two oriented structures (111 and 100) grown on c- and r-oriented sapphire substrates were obtained. The measured lattice parameters increase with CdO layer thickness, and the experimental data are in agreement with the calculated results. This new kind of SL structure may be suitable for use in visible, UV and deep UV optoelectronics, especially because the energy gap can be precisely controlled over a wide range by modulating the sublayer thickness in the superlattices.

Abstract An automatic detection algorithm has been developed which is capable of time P-phase arrivals of both local and teleseismic earthquakes, but rejects noise bursts and transient events. For each signal trace, the envelope function is calculated and passed through a nonlinear amplifier. The resulting signal is then subjected to a statistical analysis to yield arrival time, first motion, and a measure of reliability to be placed on the P-arrival pick. An incorporated dynamic threshold lets the algorithm become very sensitive; thus, even weak signals are timed precisely. During an extended performance evaluation on a data set comprising 789 P phases of local events and 1857 P phases of teleseismic events picked by an analyst, the automatic picker selected 66 per cent of the local phases and 90 per cent of the teleseismic phases. The accuracy of the automatic picks was “ideal” (i.e., could not be improved by the analyst) for 60 per cent of the local events and 63 per cent of the teleseismic events.

Abstract Van der Waals (VDW) heterostructures have attracted significant research interest due to their tunable interfacial properties and potential in a wide range of applications such as electronics, optoelectronic, and heterocatalysis. In this work, the impact of interfacial defects on the electronic structures and photocatalytic properties of hBN/MX2(M = Mo, W, and X = S, Se) are studied using density functional theory calculations. The results reveal that the band alignment of hBN/MX2 can be adjusted by introducing vacancies and atomic doping. The type-I band alignment of the host structure was maintained in the heterostructure with n-type doping in the hBN sublayer. Interestingly, the band alignment changed to the type-II heterostructrue as VB defect and p-type doping was introduced in the hBN sublayer. This could be profitable for the separation of photo-generated electron−hole pairs at the interfaces and is highly desired for heterostructure photocatalysis. In addition, two Z-type heterostructures including hBN(BeB)/MoS2, hBN(BeB)/MoSe2, and hBN(VN)/MoSe2 were achieved, showing reducing band gap and ideal redox potential for water splitting. Our results reveal the possibility of engineering the interfacial and photocatalysis properties of hBN/MX2 heterostructures via interfacial defects.

The paper analyzes the course of events and the international context of Сarpatho- Ukrainian state’s rise and defeat in terms of role and impact of the leading European actors at the end of the 1930’s. Based on an in-depth study of the wide range of literature, documents and relevant archives, the author highlights the role of Carpatho-Ukraine, which for a short period happened to be at the epicenter of the geopolitical interests of the states whose actions or inaction fueled the warmongers. The revival and strengthening of a number of European countries at that historical period deteriorized international relations. The erosion of the Versailles-Washington bases intensified the contradictions in the foreign policy between the victorious and vanquished states. The defeated countries reinforced their positions, since the victors, who were expanding their military might at the expense of Czechoslovak Republic, including Transcarpathia, were becoming more submissive in accommodating territorial claims. This situation largely updated the approaches to the Ukrainian question. The variability of the ways to solve it largely depended on the situational decisions of the Third Reich political leadership.

Some properties of the enzymes amylase, phosphorylase, and phosphoglucomutase in homogenates of cod muscle have been investigated. Amylase is activated by a short period of autolysis and by chloride ions; hydrolyses cod muscle glycogen at about half the rate it hydrolyses mussel glycogen; has an optimum temperature of 52 C for up to 5 hr incubation; and has a wide range of activity with maxima around pH 5.1 and between pH. 7.0 and 7.5. Using phloridzin, an estimate of the relative importance of hydrolytic and phosphorolytic cleavage of polysaccharide in cod muscle homogenates has been made. Phosphorylase shows two activity maxima at pH 5.5 and 6.7. The properties of phosphoglucomutase, with the exception of its pH activity, in cod muscle are similar to those reported for this enzyme in other tissues. Cod muscle phosphoglucomutase has maximum activity between pH 8 and 9.

An algorithm for the automatic detection and association of surface waves has been developed and tested over an 18 month interval on broad band data from the Yellowknife array (YKA). The detection algorithm uses a conventional STA/LTA scheme on data that have been narrow band filtered at 20 s periods and a test is then applied to identify dispersion. An average of 9 surface waves are detected daily using this technique. Beamforming is applied to determine the arrival azimuth; at a nonarray station this could be provided by poIarization analysis. The detected surface waves are associated daily with the events located by the short period array at Yellowknife, and later with the events listed in the USGS NEIC Monthly Summaries. Association requires matching both arrival time and azimuth of the Rayleigh waves. Regional calibration of group velocity and azimuth is required. . Large variations in both group velocity and azimuth corrections were found, as an example, signals from events in Fiji Tonga arrive with apparent group velocities of 2.9 3.5 krn/s and azimuths from 5 to + 40 degrees clockwise from true (great circle) azimuth, whereas signals from Kuriles Kamchatka have velocities of 2.4 2.9 km/s and azimuths off by 35 to 0 degrees. After applying the regional corrections, surface waves are considered associated if the arrival time matches to within 0.25 km/s in apparent group velocity and the azimuth is within 30 degrees of the median expected. Over the 18 month period studied, 32% of the automatically detected surface waves were associated with events located by the Yellowknife short period array, and 34% (1591) with NEIC events; there is about 70% overlap between the two sets of events. Had the automatic detections been reported to the USGS, YKA would have ranked second (after LZH) in terms of numbers of associated surface waves for the study period of April 1991 to September 1992.

During the Proyecto de Investigaciòn Sismològica de la Cordillera Occidental (PISCO '94) in the Atacama desert of Northern Chile, a continuously recording broadband seismic station was installed to the NW of the currently active volcano, Lascar. For the month of April, 1994, an additional network of three, short period, three-component stations was deployed around the volcano to help discriminate its seismic signals from other local seismicity. During the deployment, the volcanic activity at Lascar appeared to be limited mainly to the emission of steam and SO2. Tremor from Lascar is a random, «rapid-fire» series of events with a wide range of amplitudes and a quasi-fractal structure. The tremor is generated by an ensemble of independent elementary sources clustered in the volcanic edifice. In the short-term, the excitation of the sources fluctuates strongly, while the long-term power spectrum is very stationary.

This article reviews concept of metacognition, defined as: (a) knowledge about ones own cognitive activity, (b) strategies to monitor and regulate cognitive activity and behavior, and (c) subjective or metacognitive experiences which comes from some changes or temporary difficulties in cognitive functioning. While describing different conceptualizations of metacognition, its development, fields of application, relation with intelligence, and its constrictions and ambiguity, we attempt to present new and emerging metacognitive paradigm, which is, for a relatively short period, succeeded to improve, expand, and redefine wide range of theoretical and practical fields in psychology, on new and original way. How do we become conscious of our own cognitive processes? What role and significance that consciousness has, what is the functional level above thinking processes and how that level, which monitor and control cognitive activity, works. Metacognition is concept that presents, as so far, the most important insight in those human mind areas, which, although very important, remained on the margin of psychological investigations until now.

Soil mechanical research has been done in Cilacap Regency using DSHA method and microtremor data. This study aims to analyze the local land response to earthquakes based on the dominant frequency parameters (f0), amplification factor (A0), wave velocity VS30 and seismic hazard analysis through deterministic approach. This research uses 193 microtremor measurement points using a short period TDS-303 type (3 component) seismometer. Microtremor data were analyzed using the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) method in geopsy software. DSHA analysis refers to the source of the Lembang Fault earthquake and Java Subduction zone for deterministic calculations. Based on the analysis of HVSR method, Cilacap Regency is located on land type 1 (frequency 0-1.33 Hz) and soil type 2 (frequency 1,33-5 Hz) according to Kanai Classification (1983), dominated amplification value 1,104 to 8,171 times, then Dominated by soil class E (VS30 value 183 m / s) and soil class D (183 m / s VS30 366 m / s) according to NEHRP Classification (2000). This indicates that Cilacap Regency has high vulnerability to earthquake disaster. Based on the estimated value of PGA calculation method of DSHA, from the calculation of earthquake source Subduction obtained Java PGA bedrock 0,045 g - 0,0671 g and PGA surface rock 0,1926 g - 0,4855 g and calculation of Lembang Fault obtained PGA bedrock 0, 09 g - 0.025 g and PGA surface rocks 0.017 g - 0.089 g. Based on risk map analysis (combination of dominant frequency analysis, amplification, susceptibility factor and ability factor), the highest risk areas are Kec. Adipala, Kasugihan, Binangun, Nusawungun, Cil. Middle, Cil. South, Cil. North, allegedly the soil layer constituent area is a layer of thick and soft sediments. While the low risk of Kec. Majenang and Dayeuh Luhur.


Records have been obtained of fluctuations in the speed of the tidal current in the Mersey estuary, using a current meter in a stand on the bottom, and compared with other records taken with the meter suspended freely at various depths. The fluctuations covered a wide range of periods but could be separated into two main types: ‘short period’, having periods of the order of a few seconds, and ‘long period’, with periods from 30 sec. to several minutes. The amplitudes, periods and auto-correlation of the short-period fluctuations have been examined in some detail, and it is concluded that the fluctuations observed near the bottom are evidence of the turbulence associated with bottom friction. It is believed to be the first time that the presence of turbulent velocity fluctuations of this time-scale in the sea has been established experimentally. The long-period fluctuations resemble those found in previous investigations and show features consistent with their being turbulent in origin also, although turbulence of the time-scale involved in their case would probably be mainly horizontal.
