This paper discusses the use of mnemonics-visualization when memorizing physical quantities and formulae by high school students. Visualization is represented in the form of a drawing of each physical quantity that is associated with a physical quantity concept. A letter denoting a physical size is accompanied by details that indicate the scope of the variable. The paper contains ways of application of a computer slide show animated presentation and a tabular method of modeling. The importance of this work is explained by the fact that its use for the study of physical quantities and formulae helps lagging students to remember values and formulas effectively. Studies of students mastering the material with the help of mnemonics show that the correlation coefficient of 2,9 is positive. This indicates a strong relationship between the indicators. Mnemonics use significantly increases the degree of memorization of physical quantities by students, hence increases the assimilation of the main sections of physics. This developed system for efficient memorization of physical quantities and formulae can be used in different types of schools.

Different types of violence have been present in Mexico but there have been few studies that have analyzed their relationship with mental health in adolescents, especially in cities with high rates of social violence. It is important to compare different violence types and their relationship with mental health since not all relationships are the same. It appears that social violence has a stronger relationship with mental health, and for this reason it receives more attention, but other types of violence have a stronger relationship and do not receive as much attention. Chihuahua has been one of the most violent states in Mexico, and Juarez has been the most violent city in the world in 2009 and 2010. The purpose of the study is to compare the relationship of different types of violence (social, cyberbullying, partner violence, and child abuse and neglect) with mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, and paranoid thoughts). There were 526 high school students, from the cities of Juarez ( n = 282) and Chihuahua ( n = 244). The mean age was 16.5 ( SD = 1.4) years and 50.6% reported being males. The relationships among the variables were analyzed using Pearson’s correlations and multiple linear regressions. Both cities that have experienced social violence like carjacking, kidnapping, and sexual assault, but they have very small or no relationships with mental health indicators. Other types of violence have stronger correlations. Our findings suggest that interventions should not focus only in preventing and dealing with social violence, but that other types of violence must also be addressed in adolescents.

AbstractStudents’ difficulties interpreting diagrams remain a concern in science education. Research about improving diagram comprehension has included few studies of teachers’ orchestration of language and gesture in explaining diagrams—and very few in senior high schools. Research with younger students and studies of research scientists’ practice indicate the significance of the interaction of teachers’ gesture and language in explaining visualisations. The strategic deployment of such teacher-focussed authoritative explanations has been observed in facilitating progression to more complex and symbolic representations in classroom work. However, the paucity of such research in senior high school leaves open the question of how these teachers use gesture and language in managing the challenges of explaining the intricate sub-microscopic and abstract visualisations senior high school students need to negotiate. In this paper, we outline existing studies of teachers’ use of gesture and language to explain complex images in senior high school and investigate how it is managed by two biology teachers with images of different types and complexity representing the activity of certain cell components in the early phase of cell duplication. Implications are drawn for foci of further research including the role of a metalanguage describing different types of visualisations and their affordances.

Mathematics is or it should be about problem solving and math thinking. However, what mathematics students learn in schools is more about procedures for solving different types of math exercises and problems. In many cases, students learn by heart algorithms and words (math concepts) and use them for solving different math tasks. School math is very far from what mathematicians do and, in many cases, doesn’t motivate students for learning math. This paper presents the way we organized the assessment of the students’ skills developed through math research workshops and some of the assessment results. Even though we didn’t assess all the competences the students develop through the math research workshop, the findings show that the students certainly develop their problem-solving skills.

<p>I am Biology and Geology teacher in a high school and I teach for students between 15 and 18 years old. Geosciences are not very easy to understand because the concepts are complex. I try to interest my students by using different pedagogical materials including hands-on. At the end of the course, to make sure that they have a good understanding, I sometimes organize a meeting between my students and the children of a primary school. It is a way to assess them because if they are able to explain some geological issues to young children, they must before understand them.</p><p>Before the meeting, the elementary school teacher and I did an educational notebook for young children. We have planned 5 activities on the topic "plate tectonics"</p><ul><li>Explosive and effusive volcanism : children identify different types of volcanism by watching two short videos</li> <li>Study the volcanic rocks : children observe the rocks and look under a polarizing microscope</li> <li>Earthquake-resistant buildings: children use a model to understand how a building can withstand an earthquake</li> <li>The different kind of faults: children use a model to create different types of faults.</li> <li>Identify the movement of Plate tectonics: children use software to do this exercise</li> </ul><p>The meeting lasted two hours. It was a great moment for all the students. My student's job was to help the youngest to answer the questions on their notebooks. They had to explain clearly and simply and it was a very interesting exercise for them because they needed knowledge to do it. Young students asked a lot of questions, they were very curious and interested in this topic.</p><p>Here is an article in French. http://svt.spip.ac-rouen.fr/spip.php?article396</p><p> </p>

I describe a 5-day basic microbiology enrichment course for high school students. In this course, students learn microbiological techniques such as preparation of agar plates, isolation of bacteria from food, serial dilution, and plating. Additionally, they experience the steps involved in the identification of an unknown bacterium and learn about the modes of action of common antibiotics against different types of bacteria. Feedback indicates that this course provided invaluable lessons and experiences for students who had no prior hands-on experience with microorganisms.

The prevalence of behavioral risk factors according to the survey of pupils of educational and biomedical classes in Moscow and the Moscow region. Tobacco and alcohol consumption is not common among the studied contingent of high school students. 9–11 % of pupils smoke every day, and 35–47 % have tried alcoholic beverages. No significant differences in the spread of harmful habits among schoolchildren of different types of training has been established.

This study aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation between interest in entrepreneurship with the performance of industrial work practices in Vocational High School. There are two variables in this research, the student’s interest in entrepreneurship as a variable X and performance of the industry working practices as a variable Y. This research is a quantitative research, with research subjects are students of class XII TITL in SMK Muhammadiyah 1 enrolled in the academic year 2015/2016 which consists of two classes. This research examines the factors that are expected to serve as the cause of the present state, then these factors are investigated and analyzed. From the calculation of simple correlation analysis obtained correlation between interest in entrepreneurship with industry practice performance is 0.681. Analysis results also shows that there is a strong relationship between the interest in entrepreneurship with industrial practice performance.
