Abstract: My present goal is to explore some possible responses pure (or strict) retributivists might have to the gathering of empirical data on psychopaths. In addressing this issue, I will first briefly examine the strides researchers have recently made in understanding the nature of psychopathy, paying particular attention to work on the neural and genetic components of the disorder (§1). Then, I will survey several ways that a pure retributivist might respond to this data (including giving up on pure retributivism altogether and adopting instead a mixed theory of punishment that incorporates both forward-looking and backward-looking elements). (§2). As we will see, the retributivist has a fairly limited range of appealing options in this context. But my primary task here isn't to somehow refute retributivism (which comes in too many varieties to adequately address in a single paper). Rather, I am mainly interested in showing that the problem of psychopathy is relevant when it comes to our philosophical theorizing about punishment. In this sense, my over-arching task is methodological. I survey the interdisciplinary terrain and highlight some interesting and important connections between the research on the philosophy and the psychology of psychopathy.

The focus of this article is to spotlight the ritual frame of the canonical Friday prayer that is organized weekly around midday in places of Islamic worship in Italy. I verify how the Muslim communities in Italy, as a “cognitive minority”, use different strategies related to the performance of the Friday prayer ritual, and I analyze its continuous reframing. During the preliminary investigation I selected seventeen places of worship located in major cities and provincial towns located in the North, Central and South of Italy including Sicily. I have only considered spaces run by Sunni Arabs because they are the majority of Muslims in Italy. In these places I performed the participant observation from October 2016 to July 2017 collecting empirical data and more than a hundred sermons that I analyzed later. I also relied on interviews with preachers and people in charge of these places.

While the increase of the yield of commercially trendy farmed fishes are of special priority in aquaculture, a number of handy technologies are indispensable to realize the surplus production aiming to feed the growing population. As a genetic means of doing this, hybridization technology has been being used for years, because it can produce hybrid vigor through inducing heterosis. Similar attempt was made in mrigal, Cirrhinus cirrhosus, by crossing the hatchery strain with the riverine strain to investigate the heterotic effect in the progeny the species could generate through such intra-specific hybridization. Mean fertilization and hatching rates in hybrids were found to be lower by 7% and 4% respectively than that in purebreds, which envisioned to be trivial to impact the purpose of crossing. Comparative growth test between purebreds and hybrids showed significant differences (p< 0.05) in weight and length, and resulted 30.51% heterosis in hybrid mrigal. This experiment can be considered as a preliminary investigation to motivate the application of strain crossing in mrigal farming and the result found thereof can be used as a clue to optimize this growth boosting technique for the species through further research.

The rise in the number of households possessing computers and the ease of internet access has led to widespread acceptance of B2C e-commerce, and has rapidly evolved into a global phenomenon. The competition among e-commerce vendors is getting intensified year by year and all of them are adopting innovative and creative approaches to attract, satisfy and retain customers. Web attributes are considered as one of the key influencers of consumer purchase intentions. With the support of existing literature, an attempt is made in this research paper to identify the list of attributes of online shopping websites that influence consumers' purchase intentions. The findings of the study are based on empirical data collected using online survey method.

Since the discovery by Heusler in 1903 of a magnetic alloy of copper, manganese, and aluminium, considerable interest has been aroused by the peculiarities of its properties and the difficulty of their explanation. In the summer of 1905 a preliminary investigation of a sample of the alloy was made in the Physical Laboratory of Glasgow University, and the results obtained have been published in a paper by Professor A. Gray.

Abstract. Interferometric techniques allow the SuperDARN coherent HF radars to determine the elevation angles of returned backscatter, giving information on the altitude of the scatter volume, in the case of ionospheric backscatter, or the reflection altitude, in the case of ground backscatter. Assumptions have to be made in the determination of elevation angles, including the direction of arrival, or azimuth, of the returned signals, usually taken to be the forward look-direction (north) of the radars, specified by the phasing of the antenna arrays. It is shown that this assumption is not always valid in the case of ground backscatter, and that significant returns can be detected from the backward look-direction of the radars. The response of the interferometer to backscatter from behind the radar is modelled and compared with observations. It is found that ground backscatter from a field-of-view that is the mirror image of the forward-looking field-of-view is a common feature of the observations, and this interpretation successfully explains several anomalies in the received backscatter.

Conventional wisdom has long held that leadership decisions in corporate litigation are best left to the lawyers. Even as the world of corporate litigation has changed dramatically, courts have consistently relied on the lawyers themselves to decide who among them will control litigation decisions. As a result, leadership decisions in corporate litigation are almost always made in private negotiations and back room deals. This Article pulls back the curtain on these decisions, using empirical data to conduct the first in-depth examination into the market for leadership in corporate litigation. This examination reveals a market that bears little resemblance to the ideal imagined by courts and commentators. The reliance on private ordering forces lawyers to agree to overly complicated leadership structures. These structures in turn cause lawyers to underinvest in litigation, encouraging holdouts and opportunism at the negotiating table. It need not be this way. Other types of complex litigation, from small-scale consumer class actions to multidistrict securities class actions, have successfully avoided such problems. The time has come for corporate law to draw on these insights and develop a new market for leader- ship in corporate litigation. In the end, leadership is far too important to be left to the lawyers.

Circadian clocks have evolved to synchronise an organism’s physiology with the environmental rhythms driven by the Earth’s rotation on its axis. Over the past two decades, many of the genetic components of the Arabidopsis thaliana circadian oscillator have been identified. The interactions between these components have been formulized into mathematical models that describe the transcriptional translational feedback loops of the oscillator. More recently, focus has turned to the regulation and functions of the circadian clock. These studies have shown that the system dynamically responds to environmental signals and small molecules. We describe advances that have been made in discovering the cellular mechanisms by which signals regulate the circadian oscillator of Arabidopsis in the context of tissue-specific regulation.
