The internationalization of University teacher education is very important today since teachers have to prepare students for living and working in the new global world. To prepare students for the globalization of the society, university teachers should have the opportunity to gain international experience – from traditional studies and internships to summer schools and degree theses abroad, blended learning formats, buddy programmes, international field trips to preparing English-language degree programmes together with international colleagues. In this paper the authors describe the IDUTE programme (International Dimension of University Teacher Education) designed to enhance the international dimensions of various components of University teacher education programmes, to transform courses in order to facilitate change and improvement in reaching the internationalization goals of their work and to help provide University teachers with greater global competence. This paper details the nature and specifics of the IDUTE programme and provides details of the programme’s outcomes and results. The authors have done extensive research to determine both the existing international content and programme practices for University teacher education and perceived needs for improvement. The IDUTE programme promotes internationalisation among technical teachers and students and expands intercultural competence into their studies and career through creation and development of separate 16/36/72-hour modules on international activities of University Teachers.

Abstract The aim of the authors is to respond to the growing demands on the intercultural competence of university teachers due to intensified internationalization pressures on higher education, especially due to the growing number of students and teachers’ international exchanges. They report on an intercultural course design responding to this need, presenting a case study from Slovakia. First, they define the need of intercultural competence of university teachers, especially those teaching in English-medium study programmes. Then they share a) findings from a needs analysis preceding the design of a new curriculum for an intercultural competence course (ICC) at Matej Bel University (MBU) with three aims (development of linguistic, cultural and pedagogic competences); and b) results from action research during piloting the ICC course. A comparison of 2011 and 2018 surveys pointed to the growing dominance of the English language, including an increasing command of English by MBU teachers. The ICC curriculum, tailored to the pre-identified teachers’ needs, proved to be a feasible way of facilitating their intercultural competence. Its implementation revealed persistent prejudices and difficulties associated with overcoming them. It also confirmed a significant deficit in preparing university teachers for their role as intercultural mediators in English-medium courses.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the assessment process in an English Language Teacher Education Program (ELTEP, hereafter) at a Colombian public university. Following a qualitative-descriptive approach, we identified the perceptions of teachers and students facing this process, reviewed some official documents such as course syllabi and test samples, and observed some classes to respond to the main inquiries of the present study. As data collection instruments we used interviews, questionnaires, field diaries, and documentary records, which allowed for the corresponding triangulation of the information. Once the information was collected, we proceeded to its respective analysis through a methodology of descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis with the support of a computer program for the codification and categorization of information. The results of this study allow us to conclude that in spite of the general guidelines proposed by the institution in terms of assessment of learning, and some good evaluative practices implemented by the teachers of the aforementioned Program, the consolidation of an approach is required. An approach understood as criteria and pedagogical procedures that guide both teachers and students, and one that promotes more formative, fair and democratic assessments.

English language teachers customarily rule out the use of mother tongue for teaching English. Reflecting on the theoretical underpinnings and empirical research on the use of mother tongue (L1) in English classroom and its ongoing debate the present study aims to explore teachers’ and students’ perceptions of it. A mixed method approach using questionnaire and interview is employed to analyze Bangladeshi university teachers’ and students’ belief and perceptions of teaching English with the help of L1. The study also attempts to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of using L1. Results indicate that both teachers and students perceive the necessity of judicious use of L1 to facilitate learning and acquisition of English as a foreign language (EFL).

Today, we have already entered an unprecedented all media era in which the network media is highly developed and social we media are dazzling. Under this background, university teachers and students can not only obtain the information they need in a more efficient way than before, but also express their views and demands in a way of rapid and extensive dissemination. However, such a convenient all media also brought a lot of negative effects to the higher education. By analyzing the differences between the communication and social information dissemination in the era of all media and the past, this study on the one hand explores how universities innovate the incentive mechanism for the development of teacher education, and how university teachers themselves seize the opportunity of this era to improve themselves; on the other hand, it explores how to make better use of all media that students are keen on in the teaching process to carry out teaching work, maximize the benefits of high-speed dissemination of knowledge and information and minimize the disadvantages of students' addiction to the Internet, and by analyzing the effect of online teaching on the Novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic situation, exploring the innovative path of future teacher education in universities, so as to better promote the development of higher education.

The article highlights the changes in the methodology of teaching English. The communicative approach to language teaching in the context of integration and globalization, its basic methods and tools have been considered. New opportunities for ensuring future specialists' communicative and intercultural competence have been described. The concept of edutainment as a new format of communicative direction in foreign language teaching, project method, mobile learning and modular method of teaching and learning English have been analyzed. It was also determined that the communicative approach helps students to take part in discussions and to overcome the language barrier. It aims to enhance foreign language teaching by means of teachers and students interaction based on linguistic theory and communicative methodology of language teaching. The article outlines the importance of information sources of a foreign language that expand capacities and quality of education as well as form efficient education process and activities of teachers and students. The article analyzes experimental results on application of communicative methodology in teaching students. It deals with the problem of learning process modernization with applying communicative methodology and communication in e-teaching. This is seen as an important condition for integration into international environment. The article discusses the advantages of education and innovative technology in comparison with traditional forms of training. The results of the study show that the use of innovative teaching methods and tools expands opportunities and improves the quality of education.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine motivation toward learning the English Language among learners from different universities in Iraq. The study focused on identifying   the type of, instrumental and integrative, and also the activities that learners prefer to use in the classroom. Methodology/Approach/Design: The study applied both qualitative and quantitative design. The instruments used in the study included questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. A sample of 200 participants were engaged in an online survey and filled the questionnaire questions. An interview through zoom was also conducted with the selected group of learners. Results: The findings of the study revealed that learners were motivated more instrumentally as compared to integratively. It was also evident that the students were interested in different learning activities. Practical Implication: This study will have a greater contribution to the pedagogy of English language learning. The findings of the study might be used by curriculum developers to make changes and implement the best techniques of teaching English in the Iraqi EFL curriculum. Originality/Value: The results of this study may make the university teachers and students aware of the significance of motivation in enhancing the English learning process. Also, the findings may make university teachers more creative in developing interactive learning activities that will be suitable for students.

Language educators encounter challenges of integrating meaningful cultural content and assessment into ELL curricula, mainly due to inadequate professional support and training. Regardless of the growing number of young language learners and institutes around the globe, very limited studies have been conducted and published regarding young ELLs' intercultural competence (IC) development. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Global Competence Position Statement (2014) reinforces the importance of teachers helping learners deal with these challenges. This chapter conducted qualitative meta-analysis reviewing the existing literature on the various models of IC teacher preparation programs for young ELLs aiming to improve the IC components in teacher preparation curricula. The main components of IC to be infused into curricula include: (1) the educational needs and state standards of IC in teacher education programs; (2) IC theoretical frameworks and assessment models; and (3) IC practices in teacher education for young ELLs.
