Objectives: To perform a systematic study about the contribution of architecture and interior design researchers in studying the effect of physical environment on mental disorders. Background: Mental disorders are a major health problem worldwide and related to severe distress, functional disabilities, and heavy economical burdens. Studies propose that physical environment design can trigger or reduce mental disorder symptoms. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the extent of architectural design research contribution to all types of mental disorder prevention or intervention. Methods: A team of cross-disciplinary researchers gathered information from peer-reviewed manuscripts about the effect of architectural design on enhancing or reducing mental disorder symptoms. Data were collected from manuscripts published between 2008 and 2020 (research related to the topic became clearer in quality and quantity then). Keywords including architecture, interior design, physical environment, and mental disorders were used in the systematic search. Databases were collected using online resources. Numerical data collected from quantitative studies were organized in tables. Results: Our data showed that there were a lot of studies about dementia and autism; few studies about schizophrenia, anxiety, stress-related disorders, and depressive disorders; and no studies about the rest of the mental disorders. General environment followed by housing facility design were the most assessed physical environments for mental disorders. Conclusions: As all mental disorders can have a significant impact on the society, we conclude that architectural studies should focus more on improving or preventing the symptoms of all types of mental disorders through the design of physical environments.

Abstract: Islamic architecture appears not only as mere ornament, but is a media that plays an important role that has its own charm for every visitor/user, because a good design must respond to geography, location, climate, size, culture and others. The dome-shaped mosque building has thrived in the Islamic world and has become a symbol of expression of the structure and identity of a mosque. However, in the last two decades, many mosques without domes have appeared in Indonesia. Mosques with modern geometric elements are increasingly standing majestically in several areas in Indonesia. Some architects began to eliminate the dome element in the mosque, but still displayed Islamic values. One of the mosques without a dome is the Great Mosque of West Sumatra. The design is a square building that instead of a dome but instead forms a gonjong. The design of the Great Mosque of West Sumatra was criticized by several figures in West Sumatra, who said that the design of the mosque was unusual because it did not have a dome due to some literature stating that one part of the mosque was a 'dome'. news about the existence of a mosque ornament which is claimed to be a form of motif commonly used by Jews (Pentagram). The purpose of the study was to identify the design idea of the Roof of the Great Mosque of West Sumatra which describes the shape of the stretch of cloth used to carry the Hajar Aswad stone, the concept of three symbols: the springs (the elements of nature), the crescent moon and the Gadang House. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results of the study indicate that the value and meaning of the architectural design philosophy of the roof of the Great Mosque of West Sumatra, which is represented by the architect in its design concept, has a lot of compatibility with the mosque building that has been designed. The concept is very clearly visible so that even ordinary people are very easy to understand.

The design of inner space or better known as interior design is the study of design in a building and used to solve human problems. One of scientific studies based on design science, this scientific field aims to beable to create a built environment (inner space) along with its supporting elements, both physical and non-physical. So that the quality of human life in it becomes better. The interior design process aims to solve complex problems related to human response to space. To be able to solve the problem in its entirety, it requires an appropriate design concept. The success of the design concept depends on the approach taken in the preparation process.Interior spatial concepts can be built by understanding several things, including: components of design understanding, analytical design schemes, design mindset mapping, design approach methods, and ending with the design concept used in interior planning & design processes. By understanding these things, a scope of interior design in solving design problems is expected to be resolved clearly and systematically, so that the process of drafting the proper interior design & planning concepts can be done more easily. The right concept will eventually be able to tie the design results into a fully integrated design
