Background: from the perspective of mathematics education, an important issue addressed vehemently in international conferences on mathematical modelling teaching, regardless of the theoretical current adopted on the concept, is how we can teach modelling? Objective: to highlight the didactic moments announced by the anthropological theory of the didactic in the process of studying problems in concrete contexts in mathematical modelling. Design: a study and research path was conducted based on theoretical and methodological tools of the anthropological theory of the didactic. Settings and participants: preservice teachers of a degree course of a public institution, who had to solve a problem of application in savings. Data collection and analysis: From an empirical excerpt of a study developed by Sodré (2019) with preservice teachers. Results: the elements found in the empirical research confirm the hypothesis that regardless of the path taken in the modelling process, one or more didactic moments is/are performed. Conclusions: ultimately, the study of problems in concrete contexts, besides highlighting the encounter of teachers with different didactic moments, revealed the remarkable dependence between mathematical and non-mathematical know-how that stimulates us to further investigations.

Background: Gender issues have been guided recently in our country from a misogynistic and patriarchal bias. Apparently, school mathematics would have nothing to contribute or problematize in this sense. However, the exercise we propose calls into question the neutrality of this school subject and moves it from a perspective that allows us to investigate the theme of gender in contemporary times. Objective: in the excerpt made for this article, we examined the approaches of these two studies to gender issues and their connections with mathematics education. Settings: We analysed the 113 books that composed the corpus of the investigation, from where we selected 12 images that helped us compose what we called a “practical handbook on how to be a girl.” Design: this handbook was prepared as a fictional narrative from the theoretical-analytical exercise undertaken on the material through the discourse analysis. Data collection and analysis: by understanding images as pedagogical devices, we sought regularities that allowed us to elaborate the handbook. Results: from the analyses, we constructed the following sentences related to the subject girl/woman: (i) girls must be careful; (ii) girls must be selfless; (iii) girls must be delicate; (iv) women must mind the time, (vi) girls must be organised and efficient and, finally, (vii) girls must know how to cook. Conclusion: mathematics, as a non-neutral science, operates as a tool so that desirable values of an extremely conservative portion of the Brazilian population are taught and propagated.

European student teachers have the opportunity to complete a work placement at a partner school in a target language country. The focus of this study was on 35 undergraduate preservice teachers who completed a teaching practicum placement in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland between 2010-2014. Data from five years of reflective reports were content analysed and complemented with focus group discussions after the students' stay abroad. This chapter briefly outlines the structure of the teaching practicums, delineates data collection and analysis methods, and discusses the results in order to gauge the potential of such experiences for students' intercultural learning and overall professional development. Results indicated an interconnection of categories with the ‘professionalization' of preservice teachers featuring most prominently.

Background: One of the main challenges of teaching statistics in basic education is the treatment of quantitative statistical variables because, besides the calculations involved in the abstract measures, understanding the behaviour of these variables and the meaning of their statistics is complex by their very nature. In this sense, using manipulable concrete materials and the student’s action as ostensive mathematical objects in the management and representation of this type of variable can help understand them. Objectives: this research investigates how the concrete manipulable materials and the student’s action contribute to understanding and representing quantitative statistical variables in different registers. Design: we make theoretical reflections on the active use of the ostensive objects in the representation and transformation of data into statistics – tables, graphs, and summary measures – in basic education based on the anthropological theory of the didactic and the theory of registers of semiotic representation. Data collection and analysis: this is a theoretical study that uses results already published in related research. Results: the analyses point out that the use of the ostensive objects helps students’ understand the statistical concepts and that from this point on, they represent and transform the representations of statistical information in different registers more fluidly. Conclusions: the study reveals that using the ostensives and the students’ actions in managing statistical concepts is a fundamental aspect of learning.

Homelessness and housing insecurity is prevalent on college campuses and influences the ability for a student to persist in their degree program (Hallett 2010; Hallett and Crutchfield, 2017). Students struggling with basic needs have lower integration into the academic and social fabric of the institution (Gupton, 2017; Hallett, 2010). Persistence to degree not only helps break the cycles of homelessness and poverty, but also promotes social justice and resiliency. The data collection and analysis sought to answer four research questions. Using both qualitative and quantitative data, framed by the theoretical frameworks of resiliency and social justice theories was this inquiry. The research was conducted at the campus of a regional, public institution within 40 minutes of a major metropolitan area. Interviews of three key administrators and a focus group of academic advisors and survey data of 50 aid administrators at large, public institutions provided the method of data collection to assess the barriers and interventions, if any, for students encountering homelessness while in college. The data analysis found three recurring themes: Education regarding homelessness, resource development and the elimination of barriers. Research from this study underscored the need for interventions to be developed to assist the student to support retention. Additionally, the development of interventions allows faculty and staff to advocate for students while assisting the university in meeting enrollment and graduation goals.

Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study is to bring forward the ground realities regarding the practice of counselling which was considered to be a sine qua non under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The study reveals the actuality of how counselling remains an alien concept to the victims of marital abuse indicating that counselling is rarely done by the Protection Officers and as a consequence, the victims remain both ignorant as well as fail to reap the benefit of this method of resolution. Methodology: A plausible combination of doctrinal and empirical research is adopted. Doctrinal and empirical research involves in-depth study and analysis of available information in an attempt to explain the complex phenomenon. Through comparative analysis, proper reasoning has been tried to be brought to decode the practice of counselling in various states of India. The empirical research involves data collection from four different stakeholders such as; Judiciary, victims and Public. Modus operandi: Observation, questionnaire, interviews. Result: Through this paper, the authors have brought out the reality behind the policymaking and the implementation aspect of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, in the State of West Bengal. The research was conducted throughout six districts of West Bengal, especially focusing on the method of ‘counselling.’ The result that came out of the study revealed the lack of awareness of the victims about the practice of counselling’ and also that ‘counselling’ being the least favored relief granted by judicial officers. While on the other hand, the data on protection officers revealed their belief in the practice of ‘counselling’ which according to them helps in curbing the menace of domestic abuse. Implications: The study brings to light the gap between the provisions of the law under the PWDVA, 2005, and its practice in actual cases, particularly in West Bengal and requires a re-visit by the policymakers to reconsider the grand ideas set out in the Act and their practical implementations in our society. Novelty: The study was conducted in six districts of West Bengal, and is a first of its kind. The questionnaires have been prepared by the authors themselves and the answers have been obtained by personal visits to all the stakeholders mentioned in the article. A research of this kind has not been conducted previously in the State of West Bengal, making the data collection and analysis original. Apart from the field research, the researchers have referred to various primary and secondary documents to understand the background of the phenomenon of domestic abuse, for which reference has been given.

Background: One of the great challenges for mathematics education in the 21st century is to alleviate the difficulties of students in the transition from arithmetic to algebra. There is already a consensus that there should not be a transition, as several experts have indicated algebraic approaches since the early years of schooling. Objectives: This study aims to describe and analyze the operative invariants of algebraic patterns present in the strategies of students of the 3rd grade of an elementary public school in the countryside of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Design: The methodology used in this research was the clinical method of manipulation-formalization, created by Jean Piaget and applied in several of his studies. Setting and Participants: Students of the 3rd grade. Data collection and analysis: Clinical interviews. Results: We start from the assumptions of Gerard Vergnaud's theory of conceptual fields to analyze the strategies used by the research participants. Conclusions: We identified four operative invariants: the theorems-in-action "count the places each time a table is introduced" and "add two places each time a table is introduced", respectively linked with the concepts-in-action "putting the tables together" and "place at the ends of the tables".
