This study determines the relationship between the use of dialects and the English speaking proficiency among the students of the University of the Immaculate Conception. Employing descriptive-correlation method and involving 72 Freshmen Bachelor of Science in Information Technology students in English 1 of the First Semester, School Year 2010-2011, the author made use of validated questionnaire with Cronbach Alpha = 0.83 to ascertain the level of dialect use and also considered Thomas E. Miller’s standard scoring rubric for integrated speaking to evaluate the speaking proficiency of the respondents, in addressing the main issues of the investigation.  Based on the collected data and their statistical analyses set at α = 0.05, it was found that respondents have moderately used dialects in their communication and that they do not solely engage the dialects in their day to day communication. The study establishes also that English speaking proficiency of the respondents is generally poor and that each of the tested variables namely,  sex,  status of the high school, community profile, as well as the economic status of respondents, has failed to establish itself as a discriminating factor with respect to English speaking proficiency.  Likewise, the study also points out the non-significance of the relationship between the dialect use among the respondents and their English speaking proficiency.  However, it is important to note that among the indicators of the speaking proficiency, delivery has established a significant relationship with dialect use. <br />

This study was conducted to determine the mathematical disposition of graduating engineering students of the UEP College of Engineering in the School Year 2016-2017. Specifically, the study assessed the profile of the graduating students in terms of their age, sex, average grade in calculus and academic performance in professional subjects; the mathematical disposition in terms of self-efficacy component; math as sensible component; and perseverance component; the relationship between the profile and mathematical disposition of students, and between the mathematical disposition and academic performance in professional subjects of the respondents. The 132 graduating students taking up Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering (BSAE), Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE), Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) who are officially enrolled in the second semester of the school year 2016-2017 were the respondents of this study. The study found out that there were more graduating engineering students whose age is beyond 22 to 24 years old; more males; and have passing performance in calculus subjects. Generally, the graduating engineering students for the school year 2016-2017 have good mathematical disposition, specifically described as more efficacious, sensible, and more persevering. The students’ performance in calculus subjects was significantly related to mathematical disposition, while the age and sex of respondents have nothing to do with mathematical disposition. Specifically, respondents’ age and sex did not affect the three components of mathematical disposition, while average grade in calculus subjects was found to have something to do with their sensibility and perseverance level in mathematics. On the relationship between mathematical disposition components and the academic performance in professional subjects of graduating engineering students, it was found out that only the math as sensible component affected their performance in professional subjects. The result of this study also revealed that these students who were more efficacious, more sensible and more persevering performed good in their professional subjects.

Speaking English skills is a frightening thing for some English for Foreign Language Learners (EFL), including students at one of the universities in Jakarta. Even though they live and stay in Jakarta and its surroundings, which is the capital city of Indonesia with high job competition, there are still many students who have a low level of English speaking skills. This study aims to determine the relationship between English speaking skills and their closeness to English as seen from the 5 levels of students' proficiency in speaking English. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were 2 classes with a total of 60 students at a university in Jakarta in the 2019-2020 school year. Researchers used tests, questionnaires, interviews, and literature studies as data collection techniques. While the data analysis technique used by researchers is using data triangulation. The results of this study indicate that the closer they are to English in their daily lives, both by frequently reading English articles, frequently watching English films, often listening to English music, the better the students' level of English speaking skills.

AbstractThis mixed-methods study explored the conversation around orthorexia nervosa (ON) on Instagram from a Russian-speaking perspective. Two quantitative data sources were implemented; a comparative content analysis of posts tagged with #opтopeкcия (n = 234) and #orthorexia (n = 243), and an online questionnaire completed by Russian-speakers (n = 96) sharing ON-related content on Instagram. Additionally, five questionnaire participants were interviewed, four of which identified with having (had) ON. Russian-speakers who share ON-related content on Instagram are primarily female, around their late-twenties, and prefer Instagram over other platforms. They describe people with ON as obsessed with correct eating, rather than healthy or clean eating. Instagram appears to have a dual effect; it has the potential to both trigger the onset of ON and encourage recovery. Positive content encourages a healthy relationship with food, promotes intuitive eating, and spread recovery advice. Harmful content, in turn, emphasizes specific diet and beauty ideals. Russian-speaking users mainly post pictures of food, followed by largely informative text that explains what ON is, and what recovery may look like. Their reasons for posting ON-related content are to share personal experiences, support others in recovery, and raise awareness about ON. Two main target audiences were people unaware of ON and people seeking recovery support. The relationship between ON and social media is not strictly limited to the global north. Thus, it may be valuable to further investigate non-English-speaking populations currently underrepresented in ON research.Level of evidence: Level V, descriptive study.

<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical application of the Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) instrument in children with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). This study investigated the relationship between clinical speech outcomes and parental reports of speech intelligibility across various communicative partners. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> The ICS was completed by the parents of 20 English-speaking children aged 4–12 years diagnosed with VPI. The parents were asked to rate their children’s speech intelligibility across communication partners using a 5-point scale. Clinical metrics obtained using standard clinical transcription on the Picture-Cued SNAP-R Test were: (1) percentage of consonants correct (PCC), (2) percentage of vowels correct (PVC), and (3) percentage of phonemes correct (PPC). Nasalance from nasometer data was included as an indirect measure of nasality. Intelligibility scores obtained from naive listener’s transcriptions and speech-language pathologists’ (SLP) ratings were compared with the ICS results. <b><i>Result:</i></b> Greater PCC, PPC, PVC, and transcription-based intelligibility values were significantly associated with higher ICS values, respectively (<i>r</i>[20] = 0.84, 0.82, 0.51, and 0.70, respectively; <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05 in all cases). There was a negative and significant correlation between ICS mean scores and SLP ratings of intelligibility (<i>r</i> = –0.74; <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). There was no significant correlation between ICS values and nasalance scores (<i>r</i>[20] = –0.28; <i>p</i> = 0.22). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> The high correlations obtained between the ICS with PCC and PPC measures indicate that articulation accuracy has had a great impact on parents’ decision-making regarding intelligibility in this population. Significant agreement among ICS scores with naive listener transcriptions and clinical ratings supports use of the ICS in practice.
