In this paper, the effect of beach nourishment on wave overtopping in shallow foreshores is investigated with the non-hydrostatic wave-flow model SWASH. Firstly, the applicability of SWASH to model wave overtopping is tested by comparing results with a physical model setup with different storm wall heights on top of an impermeable sea dike. The numerical results show good agreement with the physical model. After validation, sensitivity analysis of the effect of beach nourishment on wave overtopping is conducted by changing bottom configurations with the SWASH model. From the sensitivity analysis, it becomes clear that wave overtopping discharge in shallow foreshores is characterized by the bores generated in surf zone due to wave breaking. To reduce wave overtopping discharge in shallow foreshore, it is important to reduce the horizontal momentum of the bores.

The building envelope is an important element that influences energy performance, both in terms of gains and losses. Indeed, much research has focused on improving and optimizing this element. The façade represents the main component of the envelope; it plays a crucial role lying in the protection of the internal environment of the building from external climate variations, by providing thermal comfort to its occupants. In order to gain in energy efficiency, a numerical investigation (CFD) on the influence of the geometric shape of façades on heat exchange in the building is carried out in this work. More particularly, the study will be established on double skin façades (DSF) representing the most commonly used facade typology on high-rise buildings. The simulations will be carried out taking into account the climate in Paris region. The first part will be dedicated to the definition of the basic model, which will be considered as a reference case with plan surfaces on the outside and inside of the building. In the second part, the influence of the shape of the external façade on heat exchange will be discussed.

The use of lightweight materials is one possibility to limit the weight of vehicles and to reduce CO2 emissions. However, the mechanical properties and weight-saving potential of mono-materials are limited. Material compounds can overcome this challenge by combining the advantages of different materials in one component. Lateral angular co-extrusion (LACE) allows the production of coaxial semi-finished products consisting of aluminum and steel. In this study, a finite element model of the LACE process was built up and validated by experimental investigations. A high degree of agreement between the calculated and experimentally determined forces, temperatures, and the geometrical shape of the hybrid profiles was achieved. In order to determine suitable parameters for further extrusion experiments, the influence of different process parameters on material flow and extrusion force was investigated in a numerical parametric study. Both the temperature and extrusion ratio showed a significant influence on the occurring maximum extrusion force as well as the material flow inside the LACE tool. The maximum force of 2.5 MN of the employed extrusion press was not exceeded. An uneven material flow was observed in the welding chamber, leading to an asymmetric position of the steel rod in the aluminum matrix.

In order to study the wave overtopping process, this paper establishes a two-dimensional numerical wave flume based on a meshless algorithm, local method of approximate particular solution (the LMAPS method), and the technology of momentum source wave. It calculates the climbing and overtopping process under regular waves on a typical slope, results of which are more consistent with the physical model test results. Finally, wave action simulation is carried out on six different structural forms of wave walls (vertical wave wall, 1/4 arc wave wall, reversed-arc wave wall, smooth surface wave wall with 1: 3 slope ratio, smooth surface wave wall with 1: 1.5 slope ratio and stepped surface wave wall with 1: 1.5 slope ratio). Numerical results of the simulation accurately describe the wave morphological changes in the interaction of waves and different structural forms of wave walls, in which, average error of wave overtopping is roughly 6.2% compared with the experimental values.
