The length-weight relationship and condition factor of Sarotherodon galilaeus and Oreochromis niloticus were observed in Strabag Lake. A total number of 365 individuals of the fish species were caught during the period of study with Sarotherodon galilaeus constituting 65.21% of the total catch while Oreochromis niloticus made up 34.79% of the catch. The mean weight (W) and mean total length (TL) were 56.04 ± 1.019 g and14.64 ± 0.103 cm respectively for S. galilaeus;62.86 ± 2.184 g and15.84 ± 0.171 cm respectively for O. niloticus. The values of constants a and b (growth exponent) were determined from the length and weight data which transformed into the linear equation of log W = log a + b log L. These parameters were then fitted to the exponential equation, W = [aL]b. The respective exponential equation for the length-weight relationship was W = 0.068[L]2.5 for S. galilaeus and W = 0.034[L]2.7 for O. niloticus which shows that both species exhibited negative allometric growth (b < 3.0). The correlation coefficient (r) and condition factor (K) recorded were 0.944 and 6.70 respectively for S. galilaeus and 0.911 and 3.49 respectively for O. niloticus specimens. The species showed negative allometric growth and were thriving well in the environment.

This study investigated the length-weight relationships and condition factors of three fish species in an abandoned gold mine reservoir. The fishes were caught on monthly basis between August 2015 and July 2016 using gill nets and traps. The results showed that Coptodon zillii, Oreochromis niloticus and Sarotherodon galilaeus had a mean total length and mean weight of 15.52±4.64 cm and 95.80±66.27 g; 15.27±4.18 cm and 89.54±63.20 g; 15.57±4.80 cm and 102.0±85.81 g respectively. Also, the mean condition factor obtained for the fish species are 2.24±0.52 in C. zillii; 2.26±0.62 in O. niloticus and 2.27±0.46 in S. galilaeus. Similarly, the slope (b) values and correlation coefficient for the three fish species are 2.018 and 0.969 for C. zillii; 1.977 and 0.926 for O. niloticus and 2.436 and 0.965 for S. galilaeus. Furthermore, the total length, weight and condition factor between C. zillii, O. niloticus and S. galilaeus differ significantly (p>0.05). The study concluded that despite being an abandoned gold mine reservoir, the environment is well suitable for the fishes.

Abstract The length-weight relationship and condition factor of Sphyraena afra from the Lagos coast (LC) and the Lagos lagoon complex (LLC) in the coastal waters of Lagos State were studied for a period of two years. Parameters a and b of the length-weight relationship were estimated using the equation W = a x TLb, while the condition factor was calculated with the equation K = 100 x BW x TL-3. The relationships of fish condition factor and body length, sex, and seasons in Lagos coastal waters were determined. The species exhibited negative allometric growth (b < 3, P < 0.05) for males, females, and combined sexes with the length exponent (b) ranging from 2.72 to 2.85. Correlation coefficient r ranged from 0.89 to 0.98. The allometric growth values obtained in LC and LLC from the length-weight relationship indicated that the fish species exhibited increases in length rather than in weight. The overall mean condition factors (K) for S. afra from the LC and the LLC were 0.97 ± 0.11 and 1.17 ± 0.12, respectively. The mean condition factors of females were higher than those for males at most of the sampling stations, and S. afra was observed to be in better condition during the dry season.

Length-weight relationship (LWR), condition factor (K) and stomach content of three cichlid fishes (Hemichromis bimaculatus, Sarotherodon melanotheron, and Chromidotilapia guentheri) were calculated at Eleiyele reservoir, Nigeria, Africa. The fish were collected monthly from fishermen during the dry season(January-March 2001) and the rainy season (April, May, June 2001). Gill nets of mesh sizes 50-55 mm were used. The LWR had a significant correlation for the three species and the growth exponent (b) for H. bimaculatus indicates a negative allometric growth (S. melanotheron and C. guentheri had isometric growth). Condition factor values were higher than one in the three species, and varied with size and season. Stomach contents revealed that the three species are omnivorous and that diet composition varies seasonally. Rev. Biol. Trop. 55 (3-4): 969-977. Epub 2007 December, 28.

ABSTRACT Length and weight data are useful in fisheries management and standard results of fish monitoring programs. Length-weight relationship (LWR) is used for estimating the weight corresponding to a given length, and the condition factor is used to compare the body condition, fatness or health of fish populations. This study aimed to estimate the LWR and the condition factor for 12 freshwater fish species from the Igarapé Fortaleza basin, a tributary of the Amazonas River system in the State of Amapá, eastern Amazon (Brazil). The coefficient of determination, the allometric condition factor and the allometric coefficient varied among species, and were compared with populations elsewhere. In 83.3% of the species, the allometric coefficient remained within the expected range. This was the first record of LWR parameters for Acestrorhynchus falcirostris.

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of introduction fishes that begin to dominate yield of fish capture at Ir. H. Djuanda Reservoir. The aim of this research was to know the length weight relationship and growth parameters estimation of nile tilapia at Ir. H. Djuanda Reservoir. The samples were collected during February until November 2008. The length and weight data of nile tilapia were analyzed its length weight relationship and the growth parameters were evaluated by FISAT II. The research shows that the characteristic of nile tilapia growth’s at Ir. H. Djuanda Reservoir was allometric negative with similarity W=0.129L2.4608, that indicated the increasing of weight from this fish not fast as its length (b<3) with the condition factor of it was 1.15. The range measure of fish length that captured was 11-41 cm. The results from growth parameters estimation were L=44.10 cm, K=0.72 (per year), with Z=2.4, M=1.34, F=1.06, and E=0,44.

This study was undertaken to assess the length-weight relationship, condition factor and age structure, of the Nile carp, Labeo niloticus, in Khashm El-Girba reservoir and Atbara River, Sudan, from December 2015 to November 2016. Samples of fish were collected bi-monthly from three locations, namely; Um Aswad (Atbara River), El-Remila and El-Monaba (Khashm El-Girba reservoir), using beach seine nets of 1.2, 4.0 and 7.0 cm stretched mesh. Out of a total number of 1,190 specimens of L. niloticus collected from the three sampling sites, 189 specimens were randomly selected to determine age. The relationship between length and weight indicated negative allometric growth pattern in all three locations, where the slope (b) of the (LWR) was highly significant (p<0.001) and ranged from 2.178 to 2.885. The mean condition factor (K) varied monthly in the three locations with values ranging from 1.671 in Um Aswad (Atbara River) to 2.548 in El-Monaba (reservoir). Although the age of L. niloticus ranged from 0+ and 3+ years, yet, most of the studied fish are between age 0 + and 1+.

The knowledge of length-weight relationship parameters has numerous practical applications in fishery research and management. Currently, there is a dearth of information on the growth pattern and state of well-being of Parachanna africana in Ijede and Agbowa Lagoons. This study period was between December 2017, and June 2018 investigated the allometry and condition factor of P. africana inhabiting the Ijede and Agbowa Lagoons, South-western Nigeria. Two hundred fish samples of P. africana was gotten from fishermen at both locations. The length and weight measurements were taken to the nearest centimetres and grams. Descriptive, correlation and regression tools, was used to 2analyse the data collected. Results obtained showed that the length-weight relationship had r values of  0.186, 0.196, 0.191 and 0.341, 0.001, 0.098 for Ijede and Agbowa respectively, at a significant level of  P<0.05 for male, female and combined sexes. The b values of 0.193 for Ijede and 0.165 for Agbowa were not significantly different (P> 0.05). The mean condition factors of 0.365 ±0.141 and 0.329±0.169 were obtained in Ijede and Agbowa, respectively. It was observed that the species in both lagoons exhibited negative allometric growth patterns with values 0.365 and 0.330 for Ijede and Agbowa lagoons respectively with no variations in the condition factors of both locations which indicate the need to assess human and domestic activities surrounding these water bodies.
