The present paper deals with the study conducted to know the floristic diversity assessment and vegetation composition analysis in various forest types of Dharmapuri Forest division situated in Eastern Ghats of Southern India in the state of Tamilnadu. A total of 352 species of 233 genera and belonging to 79 families were recorded. The quantitative features such as density and important value index (IVI) varied greatly among forest and different forest types. In the present study the diversity index of shrubs and herbs were found to be higher than the tree species. The presence of high number of higher girth class of tree species and low number of sapling and seedling indicates that the present forest is old and exhibiting the low regeneration.

The study deals with the floristic diversity assessment and vegetation composition analysis in various forest types from Hosur Forest division situated in Eastern Ghats of Southern India, in the state of Tamil Nadu. The study recorded 468 species of plants belonging to 283 genera and 91 families, including Angiosperms (464 species), Pteridophytes (3 species) and Bryophytes (1 species). Of the total, 94 species are trees, 12 are lianas, 70 are shrubs, 34 species are climbers, 194 species are herbs, sedges 7, grasses 21, ferns 3 and 1 species of moss. The five most abundant families in Hosur Forest Division were Fabaceae (45 spp.), Poaceae (34 spp.), Acanthaceae (30 spp.), Euphorbiaceae (28 spp.) and Rubiaceae (25 spp.). The quantitative features such as density and important value index (IVI) varied greatly among forest and in different forest types. In the present study, the diversity index of shrubs and herbs were found to be higher than that of trees. The maximum species diversity was recorded in Southern dry mixed deciduous forest (SDMDF) followed by Southern Thorn Forest (STF) and Southern Thorn Scrub (STS). The species diversity (H) was recorded the highest for SDMDF (5.61) followed by STF (5.18) and the lowest for STS (5.12). The presence of large number of higher girth class tree species and low number of sapling and seedling indicates that the present forests investigated are old and exhibiting low regeneration.

Milk thistle is a medicinal plant with high pharmaceutical properties to help relief of liver diseases. In this study, the effects of ultrasonic assisted seeds priming (20, 40, 80 and 160 s) with a frequency of 24 kHz and Power of 400 W was investigated on seed enhancement of aged seeds of Milk thistle. Results of the study, showed that as the aging damages increased, the longer sonication results in the better germination. Root growth was significantly improved using ultrasonic energy. Seeds aged for 24 hours, were exposed to ultrasonic produced for 20 seconds exhibited root length of 10.39 cm which was 5.48 cm with no ultrasonic treatment with the same aging duration. The maximum malondialdehyde activity was observed at the 96-hour aging treatment (87.83 nmol/grFW) while the lowest activity was observed at no aged and 24-hour aged seeds (7.28 nmol/grFW). It is suggested that there is a negative correlation between seedling vigor and MAD activity. It was revealed that fatty acid composition of Silybum marianum seed oil is highly influenced by the aging treatment. The variations of unsaturated fatty acids significantly increased in aged seeds. Our results showed that under accelerated aging conditions, ultrasonic assisted seed priming could not provide satisfactory enhancement to seed germination while no aged seeds germination was significantly improved using ultrasonic assisted seed priming.

The objective of forest management in the tropics, in recent decades, has shifted from timber production to biodiversity conservation and maintenance of life support system. However, past forestry practices have greatly influenced the structure of plant communities, preponderance of foreign invasive species, populations of high value medicinal plants as well as other non-wood forest products. We assessed the abundance and distribution of medicinal plants in managed and undisturbed forests of Dehradun Forest Division (DFD), Uttarakhand (India). A total of 80 transects (each 1 km long) were laid in various categories of forest types in DFD. This paper deals with distribution, availability and regeneration status of five commercially important species viz., Justicia adhatoda, Aegle marmelos, Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia bellirica and Terminalia chebula, across different forest types. The study reveals that open canopy forest patches, Lantana infested patches and Acacia catechu-Dalbergia sissoo (Khair -Shisam) woodlands in the eastern part of the DFD have excellent potential for the production and sustainable harvest of Justicia adhatoda. Areas those are less suitable for timber production viz., open hill forests, have greater potential for conservation and development of Aegle marmelos, Phyllanthus emblica and Terminalia bellirica. For the production and management of high value medicinal plants in the DFD these ecological considerations need to be kept in mind.

For investigation of the effect of seed priming by kinetin on germination indices and proline activity of Silybum marianum  L. under drought stress, factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with two factor includingdifferent concentrations of kinetin (0, 10 and 20 ppm) and different levels of drought stress including 0, -6 and -12 barat three replicates was carried out. According to the results, drought stress and kinetin individualy cause to decreases of germination percentage, germination rate, seedling length, seed vigor and seedling dry weight but uses of kinetin in drought stress condition improvment of them. Also, drought stress cause to increases of proline content and catalase activity. Most of the medicinal plants have seed dormancy or poor seed germination. This is due to their natural compounds or their morphological structure. Existence of such mechanisms makes the seeds able to endure harsh environments, stressful conditions or natural ageing. Different seed enhancement treatments were proposed in order to improve seed germination. In this study, it was examined Silybum marianum seed longevity (0, 48 and 72 hour of ageing) and the response to seed priming when using different concentrations of cytokinin (50, 200, 350 and 500 ppm) and different duration of treatment (8, 12 and 24 hour). Results revealed that ageing could be successfully alleviated using seed priming. Seed ageing significantly affected seed germination and vigour. Application of cytokinin considerably improved seed vigour in aged and non aged seeds. The most effective seed priming treatment was with 500 ppm cytokine, with the duration of 24 hours. In conclusion, it can be recommend the used of plant growth regulators like cytokine, as a good priming agent, to recover losses of seed quality and improve germination characteristics.

A floral survey was conducted in Aborlan Guba System, Aborlan, Palawanfollowing the quadrat technique of vegetation analysis by Mueller-Dombois &Ellenberg (1974) and Pacardo et al. (2000) to determine the forest zonationtherein and the environmental variables that influenced the vegetation pattern.Sixty-six quadrats, each for trees (10m x 10m) and saplings (2m x 2m) andseedlings and herbaceous vegetations (1m x 1m), were established throughout thestudy area. Four vegetation associations were distinguished from cluster analysis.Results of multivariate regression analysis reveal that elevation, air temperature,moisture content, water holding capacity, pH and potassium level of the soil, andhuman disturbance significantly influenced the spatial distribution of tree species.Human impact was inversely proportional to species richness (r2= 0.968). Sincethe area is encroached by the locals, the whole area must be categorized as a CoreZone for its immediate protection. Declaring it as a Protected Area under theNIPAS law ensures the long-term protection of the system.Keywords: Ecology, Forest, vegetation association, environmental factors, Palawan,Philippines
