AbstractN-type multi-walled nanotubes were synthesized by nitrogen doping using pyridine and pyridine-melamine mixtures in chemical vapor deposition, and their donor states were verified by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. Tunneling Electron Microscopy reveals small amounts of residual catalyst and Scanning Electron Microscopy show well aligned mats of the Nitrogen doped nanotubes. Nitrogen is present in the lattice of these MWNTs as pyridine structures and CNx structures. Raman scattering measurements were performed as a function of increasing growth temperature and the results compared to previously studied boron doped multiwalled nanotubes.

In this study, we compare the effects of pyridine (C5H5N) and pyrimidine (C4H4N2) precursors, using ferrocene as a metal source, in the production of nitrogen containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Using standard chemical vapor deposition techniques, highly aligned mats of carbon-nitrogen carbon nanotube were synthesized. The maximum nitrogen concentration in these materials is between 1% and 2% when pyridine is used as the precursor and can be increased to 3.2% when pyrimidine is used as the precursor. However, the electronic structure of both materials, as determined using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, suggests that the nitrogen is incorporated into the nanotube lattice in the same way for both precursors.

Vapor sensors are easily fabricated onto alumina substrates using foils of silver-decorated nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNX-MWNTs-Ag) as active sensing material. The vapor sensors are tested using carbon disulfide, acetone, ethanol, and chloroform vapors. The CNX-MWNTs are produced by chemical vapor deposition process and then decorated with 14 nm Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). The samples are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Our results demonstrate that Ag-decorated CNX-MWNTs exhibit a better response and sensitivity when compared with pristine CNX-MWNTs based sensors, making them promising candidates for air-pollutants environmental monitoring. The temperature effect on the sensor performance is also studied; we found that the detection mechanism could be tuned from physisorption, at room temperature, to chemisorption at higher working temperature. Finally, first-principles density functional calculations are carried out to understand the interactions between the systems involved in the sensors, finding good agreement between experimental results and the theoretical approach.

AbstractBoron-doped homoepitaxial diamond films were grown on natural diamond (001) substrates using microwave-assisted plasma chemical vapor deposition techniques. The surface structures were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). This showed a dimertype 2×1 reconstruction structure with single-layer steps where dimer rows on the upper terrace are normal to or parallel to the step edges. We found that dimer rows parallel to the step edges are much longer than those normal to the step edges. The nearly single-domain surface structure observed by STM is in agreement with the low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) patterns from these surfaces. The high atomic resolution STM image showed that the local 1×1 configurations exist.

ABSTRACTThis paper describes the fabrication and characterization of thin-film nanocrystalline silicon microresonators processed at temperatures below 110°C on glass substrates. The microelectromechanical structures consist of surface micromachined bridges of boron-doped hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (p+-nc-Si:H) deposited at 100°C by hot-wire chemical vapor deposition (HWCVD). The microbridges, which are suspended over an Al gate electrode, are electrostatically actuated and the mechanical resonance is detected in vacuum using an optical setup. The resonance frequency and energy dissipation in p+-nc-Si:H based resonators are studied as a function of the geometrical dimensions of the microstructures. Resonance frequencies between 700 kHz and 36 MHz and quality factors as high as 2000 are observed. A Young's modulus of 160 GPa for the structural bridge film is extracted from the experimental data using an electromechanical model and the main intrinsic energy dissipation mechanisms in nc-Si:H microresonators are discussed.

ABSTRACTUndoped and boron-doped diamond epitaxial films were deposited on diamond(001) substrate by micro-wave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition and their surfaces were studied by scanning tunneling microscopy in air. An atomic order resolution was confirmed for the observation.For the undoped epitaxial films, which showed 2×1 and 1×2 RHEED patterns, dimer type reconstruction was observed and it was considered that the growth occurs through the dimer row extension. In the case of B-doped films, the dimer reconstruction was also observed. However, 2×2 structure due to the absence of dimer was partially observed.The effect of boron concentration and methane concentration during epitaxial growth on the surface morphology were also studied. The morphology observed by STM became flatter, as the concentration of B-doping and methane concentration, during growth, increased.
