AbstractThe optical properties of TexSe(1−x) were studied for x = 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0. The results for variable temperature, polarization sensitive, spectral photoconductivity measurements on oriented single crystals, as well as the energy band gaps and their temperature dependencies are presented. In all cases, the band gap was found to increase with increasing temperature. Analytical expressions describing the temperature dependent behavior are reported. Furthermore, for the first time the characteristic two peak spectrum of tellurium was separated into its two components for incident radiation polarized parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis as a function of temperature. However, two distinct peaks were not discernible in the alloys, with or without polarization, although the signal intensity was slightly polarization dependent.

The temperature dependent tensile behavior of ligament was investigated from 2°C to 37°C. Nondestructive cyclic tests were performed on ten canine femur-medial collateral ligament-tibia (FMT) complexes at sequential temperatures of 22°C, 22°C, 27°C, 32°C, 37°C, and again at 22°C. The samples were rested at zero load between tests for sufficient time periods to allow for full recovery from the ligament’s time and history dependent viscoelastic properties. Ten additional FMT complexes were sequentially tested in a similar fashion, but at temperatures of 22°C, 22°C, 2°C, 6°C, 14°C, and 22°C. All canine FMT complexes showed temperature dependent viscoelastic properties: the measured area of hysteresis decreased with increasing temperature; the cyclic load relaxation behavior plateaued to a higher value at lower temperatures; and the tensile load at a predetermined ligament substance strain level had an inversely proportional relationship with respect to temperature.

Abstract A model for engineered wood was developed that considers the parallel-to-grain tensile strength of finger-jointed lumber at high temperatures relevant to fire conditions. The finger-jointed lumber was composed of Douglas fir, larch, and poplar wood with phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) as an adhesive. The tensile properties of the finger-jointed lumber were evaluated at high temperatures under oxygen-free conditions, i.e. in a nitrogen atmosphere. A combination of chemical and thermal-physical property analysis of the PRF adhesive and microscopic observations on the glueline was used to discuss the reduction of tensile strength of the parallel-to-grain finger-jointed lumber at variable temperature. The results show that the tensile strength of the finger-jointed lumber decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The parallel-to-grain tensile strength of the PRF finger-jointed samples at 20 and 280 °C were 84 and 5% of the tensile strength of the solid wood at 20 °C, respectively. The thermal-physical properties and scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the pyrolysis intensity of the PRF adhesive was lower than that of the wood at 220 °C or higher.

In this paper we investigate the temperature dependent behavior of a liquid crystal (LC) loaded tunable dielectric image guide (DIG) phase shifter at millimeter-wave frequencies from 80 GHz to 110 GHz for future high data rate communications. The adhesive, necessary for precise fabrication, is analyzed before temperature dependent behavior of the component is shown, using the nematic LC-mixture GT7-29001. The temperature characterization is conducted by changing the temperature of the LC DIG’s ground plane between −10∘C and 80 ∘C. The orientation of the LC molecules, and therefore the effective macroscopic relative permittivity of the DIG, is changed by inserting the temperature setup in a fixture with rotatable magnets. Temperature independent matching can be observed, while the insertion loss gradually increases with temperature for both highest and lowest permittivity of the LC. At 80 ∘C the insertion loss is up to 1.3dB higher and at −10∘C it is 0.6dB lower than the insertion loss present at 20 ∘C. In addition, the achievable differential phase is reduced with increasing temperature. The impact of molecule alignment to this reduction is shown for the phase shifter and an estimated 85% of the anisotropy is still usable with an LC DIG phase shifter when increasing the temperature from 20 ∘C to 80 ∘C. Higher reduction of differential phase is present at higher frequencies as the electrical length of the phase shifter increases. A maximum difference in differential phase of 72∘ is present at 110 GHz, when increasing the temperature from 20 ∘C to 80 ∘C. Nevertheless, a well predictable, quasi-linear behavior can be observed at the covered temperature range, highlighting the potential of LC-based dielectric components at millimeter wave frequencies.

The growth of high-quality ZnO layers with optical properties congruent to those of bulk ZnO is still a great challenge. Here, for the first time, we systematically study the morphology and optical properties of ZnO layers grown on SiC substrates with off-cut angles ranging from 0° to 8° by using the atmospheric pressure meta–organic chemical vapor deposition (APMOCVD) technique. Morphology analysis revealed that the formation of the ZnO films on vicinal surfaces with small off-axis angles (1.4°–3.5°) follows the mixed growth mode: from one side, ZnO nucleation still occurs on wide (0001) terraces, but from another side, step-flow growth becomes more apparent with the off-cut angle increasing. We show for the first time that the off-cut angle of 8° provides conditions for step-flow growth of ZnO, resulting in highly improved growth morphology, respectively structural quality. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements showed a strong dependence of the excitonic emission on the off-cut angle. The dependences of peak parameters for bound exciton and free exciton emissions on temperature were analyzed. The present results provide a correlation between the structural and optical properties of ZnO on vicinal surfaces and can be utilized for controllable ZnO heteroepitaxy on SiC toward device-quality ZnO epitaxial layers with potential applications in nano-optoelectronics.

Abstract. The elastic and anelastic properties of ice are of interest in the study of the dynamics of sea ice, glaciers, and ice sheets. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy allows quantitative estimates of these properties and aids calibration of active and passive seismic data gathered in the field. The elastic properties and anelastic quality factor Q in laboratory-manufactured polycrystalline isotropic ice cores decrease (reversibly) with increasing temperature, but compressional-wave speed and attenuation prove most sensitive to temperature, indicative of pre-melting of the ice. This method of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy can be deployed in the field, for those situations where shipping samples is difficult (e.g. remote locations), or where the properties of ice change rapidly after extraction (e.g. in the case of sea ice).

ABSTRACTThe longitudinal (LO) and transverse (TO) A1 vibrational modes have been measured between 30-1200 cm−1 as a function of temperature (30–1240 K) for CsTiOAsO4 (CTA). The frequencies for all corresponding Raman components shifted to lower frequencies on increasing the temperature, however, there is no typical soft-mode like behavior observed in the measured frequency range. The relative intensities of the low frequency bands increase dramatically with increasing temperature due to high mobility of Cs+ ion. A higher symmetry structure taking place above 940K has been confirmed by changes in the phonon spectra.

AbstractTemperature-dependent small-angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy of isothermally cold crystallized isotactic polystyrene revealed considerable morphological reorganization during subsequent heating to the melt. Both the crystalline thickness and the long period increased continuously with increasing temperature before the samples finally melted. The temperature dependence of these changes correlated very well with the melting behaviour observed with differential scanning calorimetry. As the temperature increased during a heating scan, the initial lamellae that formed during isothermal crystallization showed only little reorganization until they started to melt. Then, the molten material recrystallized continuously into increasingly thicker lamellae at increasing temperature until they finally melted. As the crystallization temperature approached the final melting temperature of the recrystallized lamellae, the initial lamellae melted without further recrystallization and no morphological changes were seen in this case.
