ABSTRACTNovel binary (Pb, Ti) coordination compound were synthesized and used as precursor for the preparation of PbTiO3 films by means of aerosol deposition and spin coating. Single-phased textured thin films of perovskite structure were fabricated on MgO(100) substrate at T=380°C.

We have investigated the effect that the Ta content has on the ferroelectric properties of strontium bismuth tantalate (SBT) thin films synthesized using metalorganic decomposition (MOD) and spin coating techniques. The physical properties of these SBT samples were strongly dependent upon the Ta ratio. Polarization measurements revealed that Ta-deficient SBT exhibited a relatively low coercive field (2Ec ∼ 87 kV/cm) and a high remanent polarization (2Pr ∼ 15 μC/cm2). The value of 2Pr decreased as the Ta ratio in SBT increased. The improved ferroelectric properties of the Ta-deficient SBT samples may have resulted from the uniformly well-grown bismuth-layered-structured (BLS) phases of the films and their highly preferential orientation along the a and b axes. We suggest that the incorporation of Ta vacancies plays an important role in enhancing the crystallinities and microstructures of Ta-deficient SBT films.

Sol-gel method is used for the formation of Pb0.499Sr0.499TiO3 (PST)thin films. The initial films were prepared with spin coating sol solution on silicon wafer and drying at room temperature and then heating coated dry sol film at 400°C for 10min. This process was repeated for 1-4 times to obtain 4 initial films with different thicknesses. The 4 initial films were annealed at 700°C for 2h to obtain PST ceramics films. The morphologies of the surface and cross-section of PST films were observed with a scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The phase structures of PST films were analyzed using X-ray diffraction meter (XRD). Experimental results show that PST film prepared by coating sol on silicon with different thicknesses can be high smooth, uniform and compact film.

In the present work, the reliability of the volume-based thermodynamics (VBT) methods in the calculation of lattice energies is investigated by applying the “traditional” Kapustinskii equation [8], as well as Glasser-Jenkins [3] and Kaya [5] equations to calculate the lattice energies for Na, K and Rb pyruvates [9-11] as well as for the coordination compound [Bi(C7H5O3)3C12H8N2] [17] (in which C12H8N2 = 1,10 phenathroline and C7H5O3-= <i>o</i>-hyddroxybenzoic acid anion). As comparison, the lattice energies are also calculated using formation enthalpy values for sodium pyrivate and [Bi(C7H5O3)3C12H8N2]. For the pyruvates, is verified that none of the considered approach, Kapustinskii, Glasser, Kaya or density, provides values that agrees in an acceptable % difference, with the lattice energy values calculated from the formation enthalpy values. However, it must be pointed out that Kaya approach, with deals with a chemical hardness approach is the better one for such kind of inorganic-organic salts. Based on data obtained for [Bi(C7H5O3)3C12H8N2] is concluded that the only one VBT method that provides reliable lattice energies for compounds with bulky uncharged ligands is that one based on density values (derived by Glasser-Jenkins).
