AbstractFerroelectric relaxor thin films of lead lanthanide zirconate titanate (PLZT) (9.5/ 65/35) have been deposited by the laser ablation technique onto metallized silicon and lanthanum aluminate substrates. The dielectric and pyroelectric properties of PLZT films and their temperature dependencies have been investigated in some detail in an evaluation of their potential as prospective pyroelectric infrared (IR) detector materials. The temperature at which the dielectric constant of a PLZT film reaches its peak is different from that for the peak pyroelectric coefficient. A lower dielectric constant at which the pyroelectric peak appears contributes to a high figure of merit for PLZT films, so that it is competitive with its ceramic counterpart, as well as with Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) relaxor ferroelectric ceramic.

In this work, (Ba0.65Sr0.35)TiO3 (BST) and Ba(Zr0.20Ti0.80)O3 (BZT) ceramic targets were prepared using the traditional solid-state reaction technique, which were sintered at 1200 °C for 2 h. The thin films of BST, BZT and sandwich structure BST/BZT/BST were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) and Si(100) substrates by rf-sputtering at 500 °C, respectively. And all samples crystallied at temperatures 650 °C for 30 min in oxygen atmosphere. The cross-sectional images of the thin films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The dielectric constant and dissipation factor tan of the BZT, BST and BST/BZT/BST thin films are 680 and 0.030, 240 and 0.021, 85 and 0.018, respectively at 100 kHz. Compared with BST and BZT films, the BST/BZT/BST film has lower dielectric constant and lower dissipation. The remanent polarization (Pr) of the sandwich structure BST/BZT/BST thin film is up to 9.57 μC/cm2, the Pr value is larger than that BST (0.25μC/cm2) film and BZT (8.45μC/cm2) film. The optical properties (refractive index n and extinction coefficient k) of the BST/BZT/BST film on Si(100) substrate were measured by n & k analyzer 2000.

BaZrO3 and BaHfO3 modified polycrystalline BaTiO3 are candidate materials for transverse mode and pyroelectric charge coupled device (CCD) arrays. Addition of 3–4% barium zirconate and barium hafnate to barium titanate alters the temperature of phase transformations and with it, dielectric and pyroelectric properties. These additions create a temperature range close to room temperature where the pyroelectric coefficient is extremely high relative to the dielectric permittivity. These materials show a very high figure of merit for dielectric bolometer applications that is competitive with existing materials, while being relatively easy to prepare.

AbstractThe aim of this work was to develop a ceramic material exhibiting a large pyroelectric coefficient p = -dP/dT (P = polarization, T = temperature) and a low dielectric constant ∈ in order to obtain a high figure of merit F = p/∈pCp for applications in infrared temperature sensing (p denotes the sintered density of the ceramic, cp the specific heat). The influence of the dopants is paramount, and it was only possible to investigate a few promising ones. Best results were obtained for PZT 60/40 (Zr:Ti=60:40) doped with 2 mol% MnO2. The effects of various dopants and some aging results for PZT 60/40 with MnO2 are presented.

MnO2 doped Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5TiO3/P(VDF-TrFE) 0-3 composites with high pyroelectric coefficient were prepared for different volume fractions of MnO2 doped Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5TiO3 ceramic powder in P(VDF-TrFE) copolymer matrix. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and the piezoelectric coefficient increased as MnO2 doped Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5TiO3 ceramic volume fraction increased. The pyroelectric coefficient and figure of merit of Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5TiO3/P(VDF-TrFE) with different MnO2 amount and 0.8mol% MnO2 doped Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5TiO3/P(VDF-TrFE) as a function of ceramic volume fraction were studied respectively. The results indicated that 0.8mol% MnO2 doped Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5TiO3/P(VDF-TrFE) in 20vol% ceramic volume fraction show the best pyroelectric properties with pyroelectric coefficient p= 7.8×10-5C/m2K and figure of merit FD=11.4×10-6Pa-0.5.
