AbstractThe aim of this work was to develop a ceramic material exhibiting a large pyroelectric coefficient p = -dP/dT (P = polarization, T = temperature) and a low dielectric constant ∈ in order to obtain a high figure of merit F = p/∈pCp for applications in infrared temperature sensing (p denotes the sintered density of the ceramic, cp the specific heat). The influence of the dopants is paramount, and it was only possible to investigate a few promising ones. Best results were obtained for PZT 60/40 (Zr:Ti=60:40) doped with 2 mol% MnO2. The effects of various dopants and some aging results for PZT 60/40 with MnO2 are presented.

BaZrO3 and BaHfO3 modified polycrystalline BaTiO3 are candidate materials for transverse mode and pyroelectric charge coupled device (CCD) arrays. Addition of 3–4% barium zirconate and barium hafnate to barium titanate alters the temperature of phase transformations and with it, dielectric and pyroelectric properties. These additions create a temperature range close to room temperature where the pyroelectric coefficient is extremely high relative to the dielectric permittivity. These materials show a very high figure of merit for dielectric bolometer applications that is competitive with existing materials, while being relatively easy to prepare.

The effects of calcined lead–zirconate–titanate (PZT) powders on the electric properties of PZT/polyvinylidene-trifluorethylene copolymer (PVDF-TrFE) composites thick films were studied in this paper. Firstly, the PZT powders synthesized by hydrothermal method were calcined at different temperatures ranging from 300°C to 900°C, and then the PZT/PVDF-TrFE composites films were produced by casting PZT/PVDF-TrFE suspension onto the indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates. Electric properties, including dielectric and pyroelectric performances of thick films consisting of PZT powders calcined at different temperatures were tested. The highest pyroelectric coefficient obtained in the sample using 700°C calcined PZT powders was 96 μCm-2K-1, which was 20% higher than the composites made of uncalcined powders. Additionally, the highest detectivity figure-of-merit (FOM) (F D ) of the composite was 1.36 × 10-5Pa-1/2, which increased about 13.5% compared to the one using uncalcined powders.

Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT), ceramics are ferroelectrics formed as solid solutions between ferroelectric PbTiO3 and ant iferroelectric PbZrO3. The subsolidus phase diagram is shown in figure 1. PZT transforms between the Ti-rich tetragonal (T) and the Zr-rich rhombohedral (R) phases at a composition which is nearly independent of temperature. This phenomenon is called morphotropism, and the boundary between the two phases is known as the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). The excellent piezoelectric and dielectric properties occurring at this composition are believed to.be due to the coexistence of T and R phases, which results in easy poling (i.e. orientation of individual grain polarizations in the direction of an applied electric field). However, there is little direct proof of the coexistence of the two phases at the MPB, possibly because of the difficulty of distinguishing between them. In this investigation a CBD method was found which would successfully differentiate between the phases, and this was applied to confirm the coexistence of the two phases.
