ABSTRACTSemiconductor nanoparticulates are important materials bridging the gap in size and electronic properties between molecular species and bulk materials. Synthetic approaches to producing controlled sized clusters of this sort will be described, covering physical encapsulation in zeolites or porous glass and extending to discrete syntheses using surface terminating reagents. The optical properties of the resultant materials will be described in detail and the structural topology of the clusters elucidated by combined powder and single crystal diffraction. Thermal transformations of these clusters into bulk materials will be tracked and the processing possibilities explored for the production of polycrystalline films and polymer/semiconductor composites. Photoconductivity in the latter composites will be described.

The synthesis and characterization of new deuterated liquid crystal (LC) compounds based on phenyl tolane core is described in this paper. The work presents an alternative molecular approach to the conventional LC design. Correlations between molecular structure and mesomorphic and optical properties for compounds which are alkyl-hydrogen terminated and alkyl-deuterium, have been drawn. The compounds are characterized by mass spectrometry (electron ionization) analysis and infrared spectroscopy. They show enantiotropic nematic behavior in a broad temperature range, confirmed by a polarizing thermomicroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Detailed synthetic procedures are attached. Synthesized compounds show a significantly reduced absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) and medium-wavelength infrared (MWIR) radiation range, and stand as promising components of medium to highly birefringent liquid crystalline mixtures.

Abstract Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted attentions form both academia and industry due to their outstanding electronic and optical properties. The AgNW-based devices for various uses were invented in recent years. It is well known that the sizes of AgNWs have a crucial effect on the performance of AgNW-based devices. However, how to synthesize AgNWs with controlled sizes is still unsolved. Researchers reported many methods to synthesize AgNWs with different sizes in the past decade. However, a review that focuses on the synthetic methods of AgNWs is very rare. The aim of this review is to summarize the recent developments that have been achieved with AgNWs, and many procedure details and results and discussions will be provided for practical use.
