AbstractHigh quality lead titanate thin films were fabricated by spin coating on a silicon substrate. The resulting dried gel layers were uniform in thickness through 2 ' area, and polycrystalline perovskite structures developed almost crack free with a heat treatment above 500°C in films with thickness above 0.36μm.Metastable pyrochlore structures were observed in films with thickness of 0.16,μm when heat treated at 500 and 600 °C. But these structure did not appear in films with thickness of 0.36μm.The thickness dependencein crystal structure of films was studied by varing the substrate condition and analyzing the interface between the.film and. substrate. In native oxide films on silicon substrates, amorphous dried gel layers were heterogeneously nucleated. Metastable cubic pyrochlore structure could be crystallized in amorphous native oxide (cubic property in random network structure).

Nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were prepared through sol-gel method and spin-coating technique. ZnO thin films then were annealed at temperature of 350°C, 400°C, 450°C and 500°C. The thin films were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) spectrofluorometer for morphology and optical properties study. The morphology study indicates that the particle size of ZnO increased with annealing temperatures. All thin films are optically transparent (~ 80 % in transmittance) in the visible light-NIR region. PL spectra reveal improved UV emission with annealing temperatures up to 500°C.

ABSTRACTThe sol-gel processing of ferroelectric thin films is being investigated at Battelle. The ferroelectric materials included in this study are PbTiO3, Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT), and KNbO3. The sol-gel processing and crystallization of these films on fused silica, silicon, alumina, and single crystal SrTiO3 substrates is described.Sol-gel derived PbTiO3 thin films crystallized into the expected tetragonal perovskite structure when heated to 500 C and above. However, the crystallization of sol-gel PZT (20/80) thin films was found to be substratedependent. The heat-treated PZT films were amorphous when deposited on silica and silicon substrates. Crystalline perovskite PZT films were produced on alumina substrates, and epitaxial PZT films were produced on single-crystal SrTiO3. Heat treatment of sol-gel KNbO3 films on silicon and alumina substrates resulted in the crystallization of a variety of non-perovskite phases, but epitaxial growth of KNbO3 was observed on single crystal SrTiO3.

Phases appearing in lanthanum-modified lead titanate thin films prepared by a diol-based sol-gel method and crystallized by rapid heating were studied. The results clearly indicate that a phase transformation from a pyrochlore structure to the perovskite phase occurs in Pb-deficient films during the thermal treatment, which involves a heating rate higher than 500 °C min−1. The rate of this transformation is a function of the lead content of the films, decreasing as lead volatilizes. Temperatures higher than 650 °C or soak times longer than 2 h make possible the complete pyrochlore-to-perovskite transformation without any lead excess in the films.

(Pb1−xCax)TiO3 perovskite thin films with nominal compositions of (Pb0.76Ca.24)TiO3 (ferroelectric) and (Pb0.50Ca0.50)TiO3 (relaxor-ferroelectric) were prepared on silicon substrates at low temperatures compatible with those used in Si-technology. The technique used for the processing of these films was ultraviolet (UV) sol-gel photoannealing, using photo-sensitive precursor solutions and UV-assisted rapid thermal processing. The UV-irradiation and thermal treatment of the solution-derived films (gel films) were carried out in air or in oxygen. In both cases, the formation of the perovskite occurred at the same temperature, and this temperature increased as the Ca2+ content increased. Thus, full-perovskite films of (Pb0.76Ca.24)TiO3 were obtained at 723 K whereas those of (Pb0.50Ca0.50)TiO3 were formed at 773 K. Well-defined ferroelectric hysteresis loops were measured in the (Pb0.76Ca.24)TiO3 films, with values of remanent polarization of Pr ∼ 11 μC cm−2 and coercive fields for the films processed in oxygen lower than those of the films processed in air, Ec ∼ 164 and ∼226 kV.cm−1, respectively. These films showed a ferro-paraelectric transition at close temperatures of Tmax ∼ 605 K, although with higher values of the permittivity for the film processed in oxygen, k ∼ 567 at 10 kHz. The (Pb0.50Ca.50)TiO3 films had a diffuse ferro-paraelectric transition with a relaxor-like character, also with higher k values for the films prepared in oxygen, k ∼ 179 at Tmax ∼ 20 K. The possible use of these materials in silicon integrated multifunctional devices is discussed in this paper.

Ln3+ (Ce3+ and Tb3+) -doped Lu2SiO5 thin films were fabricated by Pechini sol–gel method combined with spin-coating technique on silicon substrates. The results of XRD patterns indicate that the films are completely crystallized at 1100 °C, the AFM observation reveals that the phosphor films are uniform and crack-free, consisting of closely packed grains with an average size of 200-300 nm. The PL and PLE spectra show the characteristic emission for Tb3+ and Ce3+, the optimum concentrations are found for LSO:Tb3+ (8%) and LSO:Ce3+ (2%) with respectively, the effect of heat-treatment temperature on the luminescent properties is also investigated.
