ABSTRACT:Chemical synthesis of titanate and zirconate based multicomponent electronic ceramics using molecularly modified alkoxide precursors is discussed. Controlled chemical polymerization of the modified alkoxides was conducted to prepare multicomponent gels which on calcination at moderate temperatures (700 – 1000°C) formed high purity, ultrafine powders (e.g. BaTiO3, ZrTiO4, LiTaO3). In the sol-precipitation technique modified precursors were used to prepare ultrafine (< 100 nm) and crystalline powders of such ceramics as BaTiO3 and BaZrO3 at low temperatures (< 100°C), under highly alkaline (pH > 13) conditions.

Positron lifetimes have been measured in an isochronal annealing study of dynamically fatigued, high purity Cu single crystals. Decomposition of the lifetime spectra into two components results in a description of the annealing process in terms of the lifetime and fraction of trapped positrons. Positron lifetimes were also determined at a series of low temperatures (10–300 K) at different stages of annealing. The lifetime of positrons trapped at point defects is found to vary with temperature indicating that a description of the trapping process according to a simple diffusion limited model is not applicable.

ABSTRACT A novel esterase was identified through functional screening of a metagenomic library in Escherichia coli obtained from Antarctic desert soil. The 297-amino-acid sequence had only low (<29%) similarity to a putative esterase from Burkholderia xenovorans. The enzyme was active over a temperature range of 7 to 54°C and at alkaline pH levels and is a potential candidate for industrial application.

A new conceptual microplasma-based approach is developed to produce AuAg alloyed crystalline nanoparticles at atmospheric pressure and low temperatures, in the absence of a chemical reducing agent. Real-time plasmonic monitoring is demonstrated.
