ABSTRACTThe preparation of eutectics in the system BaO-Al2O3-SiO2 by the conventional technique is carried out by fusions with intermittent crushing and grinding. Hydrolysis and polycondensa-tion of alkoxides in a suitable solvent provide a simple way to obtain the homogeneous baria-alumina-silica glasses. The physical and chemical changes which occur during the gel-to-glass conversion were investigated on gel powders by thermal gravimetric analyses, differential thermal analyses, mass spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption analyses, and dilatometry.By means of the sol-gel route it is also possible to prepare coating solutions in the Y-Ba-Cu-system. Coatings of composition YBa2Cu3O7−x were deposited on substrates using dip coating and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and measurements of superconducting temperature.

Abstract Organic/inorganic hybrid materials were formed using the sol-gel process, in which SiO2/fluoroalkyl-trialkoxysilane (FAS)/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA)/trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) and SiO2/3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MSMA)/ 2-HEMA/TMPTA thin films were formed on a glass substrate using dip coating. Experimental results revealed that FAS and MSMA improved the pencil hardness of SiO2/2-HEMA/TMPTA thin films without affecting their optical properties. FAS strengthened the hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics of SiO2/2-HEMA/TMPTA thin films more than did MSMA. However, an excess of FAS and an increase in withdrawal rates deteriorates the gloss, because both increased the SiO2 content, reducing the reflectivity.

ABSTRACTThe sol-gel process was used to incorporate organic dyes including Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G), 2-(4-pyridyl)-5-(4-phenyl) oxazole (4PyPO) and the n-methyl tosylate salt of 2-(4-pyridyl)-5-(4-methoxy phenyl)oxazole (4PyMPO-MePTS) in silica gel. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis of the dye doped gels showed that the gel structure loses the adsorbed water molecules from room temperature to 150°C and decomposition of the dye molecules followed at the higher temperature. Absorption and emission of the dyes in the sol-gel glass matrix were also studied and compared with the results of the dyes in alcohol solution. The environments of the dye in silica were different than in alcohol solution.

A continuous silica film with well aligned mesochannels parallel to the Si(001) surface was found to be formed through sol–gel dip-coating of a silica precursor with nonionic ethylene oxide surfactant. Two two-dimensional mesoporous structures in centered and non-centered rectangular symmetries and with the short axes of elongated ellipsoidal pores normal to the surface were observed by X-ray and electron diffraction. Detailed transmission electron microscopy investigations were employed to view the direction dependence of the channel or pore packing in the continuous film.
