AbstractEpitaxial regrowth of gold film on Si as a result of Au/Si eutectic reaction and epitaxial aluminum spikes forming at IC contacts during sintering have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For gold film on Si, three types of epitaxy were observed: (1) the crystal structures of the two lattices are exactly the same, (2) the two structures have the orientation relationship of Au(111)//Si(111) and Au[132]//Si[231] and (3) 20° misorientation from the relationship in (2). Two orientation relationships were observed in the case of Al spike in Si: (1) Al[011]//Si[123] and Al(200)//Si(11), (2) Al[001]//Si[112] and 2° misorientation between Al(200) and Si(111). Possible mechanisms are proposed to explained the observed epitaxial growth.

AbstractTransmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to investigate the dissolution behavior of nanocrystalline grain boundary T1 precipitates in Al-3Cu-2Li. These grain boundary T1 plates exhibit an orientation relation with matrix, with the (1-11)α-Al parallel to (0001)T1 and [022]α-Al parallel to [10-10]T1, which is similar to the orientation relationship of T1 plates formed within grains. TEM studies showed that these grain boundary T1 plates react readily in moist air. As a result of the localized dissolution, the Cu-rich clusters form onto T1, which is consistent with the localized dissolution behavior observed in nanocrystalline S phase in Al-Cu-Mg.

Phase separation behaviors of a quenched Cu-3.0at%Ti alloy, as well as crystallographic structures of Cu-20.7at%Ti alloy have been studied using transmission electron microscopy. The furnacecooled Cu-20.7at%Ti alloy are composed of a-Cu4Ti (Ni4Mo-type) and b-Cu4Ti (Au4Zr-type) with the orientation relationship of (011)a//(110)b, [100]a//[001]b. As-quenched Cu-3.0at%Ti alloy showed a modulated structure with the modulation length of about 4 nm. When aged at 723K for 8 hr, the a-Cu4Ti phase emerges within the modulated or tweed-like microstructure. Prolonged aging results in the growth of the a-Cu4Ti particles and the loss of coherency. It is likely that asquenched Cu-3.0at%Ti alloy decomposes spinodally at 723K, followed by polymorphous ordering; though the present study did not exclude, as an alternative path, a decomposition mechanism based on the catastrophic nucleation.

ABSTRACTGold nanoclusters dispersed in single crystal TiO2 (110) have been formed by 2MeV Au2+ implantation to an ion fluence of 1×1017 cm-2 at 300 K and 975 K followed by annealing at 1275 K for 10 hours. The morphological features, size and crystallographic orientation of the Au nanoclusters with respect to the TiO2 matrix have been investigated using conventional transmission electron microscopy and electron diffractions. In particular, the interface structure between the Au nanoclusters and TiO2 was investigated. Atomic structural model of interface between Au and TiO2 was established based on high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) imaging and HRTEM image simulations. Two types of orientation relationship can be identified, Au<110>//TiO2[001] and Au{111}//TiO2(200), and Au<110>//TiO2[001] and Au{111}//TiO2(110). Au clusters are faceted along Au{112}and Au{111} or Au{220} and Au{002} planes. The precipitated Au clusters show extensive (111) twins. These orientation relationships are the same for Au clusters grown on TiO2(110) surface, indicating that lowering interfacial energy to be a governing factor for setting the orientation relationship.

The orientation relationships among TiB (B27), B2, and Ti3Al phases have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. By using the composite selected-area electron diffraction technique, the orientation relationship between TiB (B27) and B2 was determined to be [100]TiB[001]B2, (001)TiB(010)B2; and that between TiB (B27) and Ti3Al was . These orientation relationships have been predicted precisely by the method of coincidence of reciprocal lattice points.

The host–parasite interface in Eocronartium muscicola, Auriculariales sensu lato, was examined histologically for 6 of the 21 reported moss hosts, using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. A unique mode of fungal biotrophy was encountered in 5 of the 6 mosses analyzed, in which E. muscicola exploits gametophytic host transfer cells concomitant with varying degrees of supplantation of the moss sporophyte. Basidiocarps are restricted in these mosses to postfertilized archegonia, in which they are seen to associate with the sporophyte foot region, where they gain access to the host transfer cell nutritional interface. Basidiocarp ontogeny is presented as it relates to the development of the host–parasite interface. The relationship of E. muscicola to other simple-septate auricularioid taxa and the the Uredinales is discussed.

ABSTRACTThe application of transmission electron microscopy to the study of the early stages of hydration C3S and the microstructure of very mature C3 S paste is reported. In the former case the effect of water-cement ratio appears to be very important. In the latter, a detailed evaluation of the microstructures of inner C-S-H, outer C-S-H and CH is possible and the relationship of these to models of cement hydration is discussed.

The relationship of morphological integrity and viability of mitochondria in freeze-stopped cells is of considerable interest and importance to biological scientists. This study represents the preliminary work for obtaining ultrastructural data for comparison with glutamate dehydrogenase activity, a marker for mitochondria protein, on freeze-stopped liver tissue from the rat.The pellets of ground freeze-stopped rat liver were fixed in three different ways: (l) OsO4 fume fixation. The fixing chamber consists of a capped plastic centrifuge tube containing an open ampule of OsO4 crystals. The chamber was maintained at -90°C at all time before and during fixation. After an overnight fixing, the tissue pellets were gradually brought to 4°C in a refrigerator and postfixed in glutaraldehyde.

Interfacial precipitation in sol-gel derived, titania-doped diphasic mullite gels was investigated using conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Rutile, anatase, and brookite precipitated on the interface between {110} planes of mullite and glass pockets in the sintered body. The formation of brookite may be attributable to the Si- and Al-rich environment during precipitation. Each polymorph of titania has a unique morphology and orientation relationship with mullite. Brookite exhibits a truncated pill box shape, and anatase displays a vermicular morphology. Quenching experiments suggest that the precipitates grow and undergo phase transformations during cooling.

The crystallographic orientation relationships (ORs) of precipitated β-Mg2Sn particles in Mg–9.76 wt% Sn alloy aged at 573 K for 5 h, corresponding to its peak hardness, were investigated by advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM). OR-3 of (110)β//(0001)αand [\overline 111]β//[1\overline 210]αand OR-4 of (110)β//(0001)αand [001]β//[2\overline 1\overline 10]αare the key ORs of β-Mg2Sn particles in the alloy. The proportions of β-Mg2Sn particles exhibiting OR-3 and OR-4 were determined as 75.1 and 24.3%, respectively. Crystallographic factors determined the predominance of OR-3 in the precipitated β-Mg2Sn particles. This mechanism was analyzed by a three-dimensional invariant line model constructed using a transformation matrix in reciprocal space. Models of the interface of precipitated β-Mg2Sn and the α-Mg matrix were constructedviahigh-resolution TEM and atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning TEM.
