ABSTRACTWe propose a new method for the determination of the electro-optic constant. Third-order nonlinear susceptibility (X(3)(-ω;ω,0, 0)) of polycarbonate films doped with 4-diethylamino-4′-nitrostilbene molecules was determined between 550 and 800 nm at room temperature by using this method. X(3)(-ω;ω0, 0) is (5-4i) × 10-12 esu at 600 nm.

The third-order nonlinearity susceptibility is obtained as a function of wavelength for ZnS / CdSe / ZnS structure. Numerical calculations show that the nonlinear susceptibility of this structure depends on parameters such as structure size, relaxation time and pump photon energy. The intensity and position of third-order nonlinear susceptibility peaks depend on shell thicknesses; smaller thicknesses have peak susceptibility at shorter wavelength.

A novel method for determination of real and imaginary parts of a third-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor in a single measurement is proposed and demonstrated. The method measures directly the ratio of imaginary to real part of the [Formula: see text] coefficient in isotropic media. Its sensitivity is high enough to enable measurements with unamplified pulses from a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser. Results of measurements for CS 2, 1-Chlornaphtalene and polycrystalline ZnSe are presented.

A family of TeO2-based glasses is known to have high third-order nonlinear properties and expected as nonlinear optical devices. In the present study, we fabricated Ag2O-TeO2 and Ag2O-Nb2O5-TeO2 glasses, and estimated their structures and linear/nonlinear optical properties. The main results showed that the absorption-edge of the glasses was shifted to longer wavelength side with increasing Ag2O content. By Raman spectroscopy, it was found that an increase in Ag2O content promoted to change TeO4 to TeO3/TeO3+1 units. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the presence of an electronic state of Ag2+ ions, which was supposed to have a large influence on the absorption-edge wavelength. In Ag2O-Nb2O5-TeO2 glass system, the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) increased with increasing Ag2O content at the expense of Nb2O5 content.
