ABSTRACTFerroelectric 0.7BiFeO3-0.3PbTiO3 (BFO-PT) films were deposited on stainless steel substrates by the sol-gel method. A thin layer of PbTiO3 (PT) was introduced between the substrates and BFO-PT films in order to decrease the annealing temperature of BFO-PT films. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that BFO-PT films could be well crystallized into the perovskite structure at about 575 oC. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that BFO-PT thin films have grain size of about 50∼60 nm. Our results indicated BFO-PT films deposited on stainless steel substrates maintained the excellent ferroelectric properties with remnant polarization of about 40∼50 μC/cm2.

Sm, Zr doped nanocrystalline TiO2 powers were prepared successfully by a facile ultrasonic assisted sol-gel method. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. X-ray diffraction peaks could be assigned to anatase TiO2, which confirms the crystallinity of the as-prepared samples. The SEM images demonstrated that the crystalinity is formed with spherical aggregates with average diameters ranging from 10 to 20 nm. The photocatalytic activity was studied on the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) aqueous solution irradiated with UV-visible light. Under UV-visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic performances of the doped samples were much better than that of pure TiO2, and the co-dopant showed highest. It demonstrated that a strong Sm-Zr synergistic interaction might play a decisive role in driving the excellent photocatalytic performance of TiO2.

Nanocrystalline lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powders with composition at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) were synthesized by a simple aqueous based sol-gel method, using lead nitrate, zirconium nitrate and tetrabutyl titanate as the starting materials. The sol could be easily transformed into gel, firstly heated at 120°C for 10h, then at 180°C for 24h. The thermal decomposition process of the gel was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The effect of citrate addition amount on the calcining temperature was discussed. The results reveal that pure perovskite phase PZT powders can be obtained at a calcining temperature as low as 600°C. The average grain size of the powders was determined by transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The influences of calcining temperature and the pH value of the solution on the grain size were investigated. The sintering temperature and electrical properties of the ceramics derived by nano-powders were compared with those prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The result shows that using the nanopowder, the sintering temperature could be reduced by about 100°C and the ferroelectric properties were enhanced.

The sol-gel technique has many advantages over the other mechanism for synthesizing metal oxide nanoparticles such as being simple, cheap and having low temperature and pressure. Utilization of waste materials as a precursor for synthesis makes the whole process cheaper, green and sustainable. Calcium Oxide nanoparticles have been synthesized from eggshell through the sol-gel method. Raw eggshell was dissolved by HCl to form CaCl2 solution, adding NaOH to the solution dropwise to agitate Ca (OH)2 gel and finally drying the gel at 900 °C for 1 h. The synthesized nanoparticle was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The FTIR and XRD results have clearly depicted the synthesis of calcium oxide from eggshell, which is mainly composed of calcium carbonate. The FE-SEM images of calcium oxide nanoparticles showed that the particles were almost spherical in morphology. The particle size of the nanoparticles was in the range 50 nm–198 nm. Therefore, waste eggshell can be considered as a promising resource of calcium for application of versatile fields.

ABSTRACTPbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) ferroelectric thin films were deposited on LaNiO3 (LNO) buffered stainless steel (SS) substrates by sol-gel method. The effect of LNO buffer layer on the orientation and electric properties of PZT thin films for different thicknesses were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that PZT thin films on SS substrates exhibit the (100) preferred orientation with the LNO buffer layers. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that PZT thin films were well crystallized with grain size of about 100 nm. PZT thin films deposited on SS maintain the excellent ferroelectric properties with remnant polarization of about 20 μC/cm2.

Mn, Fe doped ZnO powders (Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2, x≤0.05) were synthesized by an ameliorated sol-gel method, using Zn(CH3COO)2, Mn(CH3COO)2and FeCl2as the raw materials, with the addition of vitamin C as a kind of chemical reducer. The resulting powder was subsequently compacted under pressure of 10 MPa at the temperature of 873K in vacuum. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2powder and bulk samples have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study chemical valence of manganese, iron and zinc in the samples. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O (x≤0.05) samples were single phase with the ZnO-like wurtzite structure. No secondary phase was found in the XRD spectrum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that Fe and Mn existed in Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2samples in Fe2+and Mn2+states. The results of VSM experiment proved the room temperature ferromagnetic properties (RTFP) of Mn, Fe co-doped ZnO samples.

Abstract In this paper, we reported the synthesis of NiO NPs and Mg doped-NiO NPs using the facile sol-gel method. Besides, the influence of the variation of Mg dopant on the structural, morphological and optical properties of the prepared Mg-NiO NPs was studied. The synthesized Mg-NiO NPs nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of the cubic structure of Mg doped-NiO NPs after doping with the magnesium. The increase in the crystal size was observed with the increase in the concentration of the Mg dopant element. The FESEM images reveal the formation of nickel oxide through the appearance of spherical clusters, while the hybrids appear as wrinkled surface covered with spherical particles of magnesium. The UV-Vis spectrum showed a shift towards shorter wavelengths with an increase in the concentration of the Mg dopant element due to the quantum confinement effect. The hemolysis activity study showed that NiO NPs had a low hemolysis percentage of 1.47% and increased with increasing concentration. While, increasing of the RBC hemolysis (5.9%) after NiO doped with Mg. The antibacterial activity was studied against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa bacteria, and indicated the highest growth inhibition zones of Mg-doped NiO NPs as compared with NiO NPs against of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively.

Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped TiO2 nanocrystals were prepared by Sol-gel method in which titanium tetrachloride was adopted as the precursor. The structure, particle size, and optical properties of samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), Field emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy(FE-SEM) and photoluminescence(PL) spectra. Er3+ concentration was fixed at 1.0mol%, and Yb3+ concentration was changed from 3 to 10mol%. Intense upconversion luminescence was observed when the samples were excited by 980nm laser. The dependence of upconversion luminescence on Yb3+ concentration was presented. The results show that the upconversion luminescence increases with the Yb3+ concentration and gets its peak at 5%. The ratio of red emission to green emission(R/G) was strikingly enhanced with the increase of Yb3+ concentration. Under the excitation of 980nm, the green emission in the range of 520-570nm (2H11/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2) and the red emission in the range of 640~690nm (4F9/2 →4I15/2) are both due to two photons process. The possible upconversion mechanism was discussed.
