AbstractField-activated electroactive polymers (FEAPs) are a class of electroactive polymers that are insulating and exhibit coulombic interaction with and dipole formation in response to external electric signals. There are many polarization mechanisms in insulating polymers, from the molecular to the mesoscopic and even the macroscopic level, which couple strongly with mechanical deformation and can be used to create polymer actuators and sensors. FEAPs feature fast response speed limited by the polymer dielectric and elastic relaxation time, a very large strain level (to more than 100% strain), high electromechanical efficiency, the ability to operate down to micro/nanoelectromechanical devices, and a highly reproducible strain response under electric fields. One challenge in FEAP actuators and electromechanical devices is reducing the operation voltage to below 100 V or even 10 V while achieving an electromechanical conversion efficiency comparable with that of inorganic electroactive materials.

Innovative types of actuators are required for several applications, especially in the field of medicine, robotics and micro-systems. In this context, Electroactive Polymers represent a promising group among all smart materials. They can change their dimensions and shape when an external voltage is applied, and their mechanical flexibility and ease of processing offer advantages over traditional electroactive materials expanding the options for different mechanical configurations. Dielectric elastomers are among the most promising EAPs for many applications, including actuators and sensors for the microfactory: they work in a dry environment, can achieve great deformations and support high voltage. They can be represented by a parallel plate capacitor: under an electric field the elastomer is squeezed in the thickness causing expansion in the transverse direction. Dielectric EAP actuators require large electric fields (hundreds of kV/mm) but can produce very large strain (up to 400%). Due to their unique properties and potential applications, in this paper the study of the electromechanical behaviour of a dielectric elastomer and a possible application related with the microfabrication of hybrid microsystem is presented.

Breath monitoring is significant in assessing human body conditions, such as cardiac and pulmonary symptoms. Optical fiber-based sensors have attracted much attention since they are immune to electromagnetic radiation, thus are safe for patients. Here, a microfiber (MF) humidity sensor is fabricated by coating tin disulfide (SnS2) nanosheets onto the surface of MF. The small diameter (~8 μm) and the long length (~5 mm) of the MF promise strong interaction between guiding light and SnS2. Thus, a small variation in the relative humidity (RH) will lead to a large change in optical transmitted power. A high RH sensitivity of 0.57 dB/%RH is therefore achieved. The response and recovery times are estimated to be 0.08 and 0.28 s, respectively. The high sensitivity and fast response speed enable our SnS2-MF sensor to monitor human breath in real time.

AbstractIn this manuscript, the inorganic perovskite CsPbI2Br and CsPbIBr2 are investigated as photoactive materials that offer higher stability than the organometal trihalide perovskite materials. The fabrication methods allow anti-solvent processing the CsPbIxBr3−x films, overcoming the poor film quality that always occur in a single-step solution process. The introduced diethyl ether in spin-coating process is demonstrated to be successful, and the effects of the anti-solvent on film quality are studied. The devices fabricated using the methods achieve high-performance, self-powered and the stabilized photodetectors show fast response speed. The results illustrate a great potential of all-inorganic CsPbIxBr3−x perovskites in visible photodetection and provide an effective way to achieve high performance devices with self-powered capability.

First a new autopilot design model is presented for the interceptor missile with the blended aerodynamic lift and reaction jet. The reaction jet can improve the response speed, but the structure of control system becomes more complex. Therefore how to design control strategy properly is an urgent problem. Second, considering the discrete property of the lateral pulse jet thrusters and the continuous property of the aerodynamic fins, a kind of ADRC (active disturbance rejection control) autopilot system was designed for the aerodynamic lift/reaction jet missile. Finally, through a testing in the simulation of MATLAB, it is shown that, due to the sufficient utilization of the reaction jet, there is a significant improvement in the fast response and robust performance of the proposed controller. It is applicable to design the autopilot of aerodynamic lift and reaction jet blended missile.

The bi-directional DC / DC converter in DC microgrid is a typical nonlinear system which has large voltage disturbance during lead accumulator charging and discharging. In order to solve the problem of voltage disturbance, the linearization of the converter is realized by exact feedback linearization, and the sliding mode controller is designed by using exponential approximation law. The simulation results show that the method has fast response speed, strong anti-interference ability and good steady-state characteristics.

ABSTRACTZinc Oxide (ZnO), II-VI compound semiconductor, is a promising material for ultraviolet (UV) photon sensor applications due to its attractive properties such as good photoconductivity, ease processing at low temperatures and excellent radiation hardness. The rf magnetron sputtering is a suitable deposition technique due to better control over stoichiometry and deposition of uniform film. Studies have shown that the presence of surface defects in ZnO and subsequently their passivation are crucial for enhanced photo-response characteristics, and to obtain the fast response speed. Worldwide efforts are continuing to develop good quality ZnO thin films with novel design structures for realization of an efficient UV photon sensor. In the present work, UV photon sensor is fabricated using a ZnO thin films deposited by rf magnetron sputtering on the corning glass substrate. Photo-response, (Ion/Ioff) of as-grown ZnO film of thickness 100 nm is found to be 3×103 with response time of 90 ms for UV intensity of 140 μW/cm2 (λ = 365 nm). With irradiation on ZnO thin film by pulsed Nd:YAG laser (forth harmonics 266 nm), the sensitivity of the UV sensor is found to enhance. The photo-response increases after laser irradiation to 4x104 with a fast response speed of 35 ms and attributed to the change in surface states and the native defects in the ZnO thin film. Further, enhancement in the ultraviolet (UV) photo-response (8×104) of detector was observed after integrating the nano-scale islands of Sn metal on the surface of laser irradiated ZnO thin film.
