ABSTRACTPower source plays an important role in keeping normal functions of biodegradable electronic devices. In this paper, we proposed a fabrication method of biodegradable supercapacitor (BSC), which can provide energy for portable and implantable medical electronics. The BSC has a sandwich-like symmetric structure, which was assembled layer by layer. The electrochemical performances of BSC were measured, including the cyclic voltammetry test, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Titanium foil was used as a template to generate microstructure for polylactic acid (PLA) supporting substrate. The microstructure provided strong adhesion force for iron film in sputtering process. The nanoporous zinc oxide layer was prepared by evaporation-driven self-assembly technology on iron film. The nanoporous structure was in favour of ionic storage in charging-discharging process. About 60% of capacitance retention was achieved after 3000 times of cycling test. After connecting three BSC in series, a green LED pattern was lighted up immediately, indicating that the energy was stored in BSC device successfully. After immersing the BSC in DMEM, the BSC can be totally degraded gradually. This work provided a feasible scheme for developing biodegradable energy storage device, it also gave a possible avenue for powering biodegradable electronic devices.

(1) Background: In the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC), accurate delivery and release of anti-inflammatory drugs to the site of inflammation can reduce systemic side effects. (2) Methods: We took advantage of this goal to prepare resveratrol-loaded PLGA nanoparticles (RES-PCAC-NPs) by emulsification solvent volatilization. After layer-by-layer self-assembly technology, we deposited chitosan and alginate to form a three-layer polyelectrolyte film. (3) Results: It can transport nanoparticles through the gastric environment to target inflammation sites and slowly release drugs at a specific pH. The resulting RES-PCAC-NPs have an ideal average diameter (~255 nm), a narrow particle size distribution and a positively charged surface charge (~13.5 mV). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that resveratrol was successfully encapsulated into PCAC nanoparticles, and the encapsulation efficiency reached 87.26%. In addition, fluorescence imaging showed that RES-PCAC-NPs with positive charges on the surface can effectively target and accumulate in the inflammation site while continuing to penetrate downward to promote mucosal healing. Importantly, oral RES-PCAC-NPs treatment in DSS-induced mice was superior to other results in significantly improved inflammatory markers of UC. (4) Conclusions: Our results strongly prove that RES-PCAC-NPs can target the inflamed colon for maximum efficacy, and this oral pharmaceutical formulation can represent a promising formulation in the treatment of UC.

AbstractIn this study, we investigated that the activated carbon (AC)-based supercapacitor and introduced SIFSIX-3-Ni as a porous conducting additive to increase its electrochemical performances of AC/SIFSIX-3-Ni composite-based supercapacitor. The AC/SIFSIX-3-Ni composites are coated onto the aluminum substrate using the doctor blade method and conducted an ion-gel electrolyte to produce a symmetrical supercapacitor. The electrochemical properties of the AC/SIFSIX-3-Ni composite-based supercapacitor are evaluated through cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests (GCD). The AC/SIFSIX-3-Ni composite-based supercapacitor showed reasonable capacitive behavior in various electrochemical measurements, including CV, EIS, and GCD. The highest specific capacitance of the AC/SIFSIX-3-Ni composite-based supercapacitor was 129 F g−1 at 20 mV s−1.

Vanadium oxide films were prepared via the sol–gel process and dip coating method, using V2O5as raw materials and H2O2(volume fraction 30) as the solvent. Mn and Ni ions were added to vanadium oxide sol to prepare doping vanadium oxide films. The films were characterized by atomic force microscopy, FT-IR, X-ray diffraction and electrochemical techniques. The add-on of Metal ions will not affect the morphology of the vanadium oxide films, but change the valence of vanadium ion and vanadium oxide crystal phase. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry curves show that metal ions doping vanadium oxide films exhibit reversible electrochemical reaction. But electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicates pure vanadium oxide film has a better diffusion rate.

Abstract The scientific focus has been directed through the production and application of ‘wonder material- graphene’ after its discovery in 2004. But the mass production cost has become a huge disadvantage towards commercializing graphene based manufactures. As alternative low cost material, exfoliated graphite (EG) has emerged to be a novel nanostructured carbon material with a potential for electrochemical energy storage device applications owed to its unique characteristics similar to graphene. In this study a series of EG samples were prepared by a surfactant mediated liquid phase exfoliation method by changing the exfoliation time. Electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) were fabricated using different EG samples as an electrode material and a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). They were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge discharge (GCD) techniques. EDLC having EG electrodes of 10 h exfoliation time showed the highest results with single electrode specific capacitance (Csc) of 4.12 F g− 1, single electrode specific discharge capacitance (Csd) of 1.10 F g− 1 and relaxation time of 0.22 s from CV, GCD and EIS respectively.

A hybrid battery-supercapacitor (LiFePO4+AC)/Li4Ti5O12 using a Li4Ti5O12 anode and a LiFePO4/activated carbon (AC) composite cathode was built. The electrochemical performances of the hybrid battery-supercapacitor (LiFePO4+AC)/Li4Ti5O12 were characterized by constant current charge-discharge, rate charge-discharge, electrochemical impedance spectra, internal resistance, leakage current, self-discharge and cycle performance testing. The results show that (LiFePO4+AC)/Li4Ti5O12 hybrid battery-supercapacitors have rapid charge-discharge performance, high energy density, long cycle life, low resistance, low leakage current and self-discharge rate, which meet the requirements of practical power supply and can be applied in auxiliary power supplies for hybrid electric vehicles. At 4C rate, the capacity loss of (LiFePO4+AC)/Li4Ti5O12 hybrid battery-supercapacitors in constant current mode is no more than 7.71% after 2000 cycles, and the capacity loss in constant current-constant voltage mode is no more than 4.51% after 1500 cycles.

Various morphologies of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs), including cubic, thorhombic and discal shapes were synthesized by a facile meta-ion mediated hydrothermal route. To further improve the electrochemical sensing properties, discal Fe2O3 NPs with the highest electrocatalytic activity were coupled with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The surface morphology, microstructures and electrochemical properties of the obtained Fe2O3 NPs and Fe2O3/GO nanohybrids were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. As expected, the electrochemical performances were found to be highly related to morphology. The discal Fe2O3 NPs coupled with GO showed remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA), due to their excellent synergistic effect. The electrochemical responses of both DA and UA were linear to their concentrations in the ranges of 0.02–10 μM and 10–100 μM, with very low limits of detection (LOD) of 3.2 nM and 2.5 nM for DA and UA, respectively. Moreover, the d-Fe2O3/GO nanohybrids showed good selectivity and reproducibility. The proposed d-Fe2O3/GO/GCE realized the simultaneous detection of DA and UA in human serum and urine samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Activated carbon (AC)/polyaniline (PANI) composite electrode materials were synthesized in this article. The effect of preparation such as BET surface area and porous size of AC on the electrochemical performances of AC/PANI composite material was investigated. The electrochemical performances of the composite were tested with cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectrometry in 6mol/L KOH solution using Hg/HgO as reference electrode. Composite surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result shows that when the ratio of AC to aniline increases, the conversion of aniline and the capacitance value of composite also increase in keeping the ratio of AC to aniline constant. When AC: aniline : (NH4)2S2O8 =7:1:1, the conversion of aniline up to more than 95% and the capacitance value of electrode materials increased from 239F/g(pure AC) to 409F/g, which is 71.1% higher than pure AC. Pore structure of AC also has great effect on electrochemical performances of electrode material. With the increase of proportion of mesoporous, the electrochemical properties of composite are greatly increased.
