Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is a communal broad problem in equines but in donkeys, the disease is a subclinical disorder which leads to economic losses. Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae are the most predominant parasitic infestation in donkeys. The present study was planned to facilitate the early and efficient diagnosis of gastric ulceration in donkeys through gastroscopic examination. The study was conducted on 120 adult Egyptian donkeys (Equus asinus) from both sexes after a one-month acclimatisation period. Gastroscopic examination was used to evaluate the presence of gastric lesions. In the majority of infested donkeys, G. intestinalis larvae were in the non-glandular part of the stomach. The prevalence of Gastrophilus larvae in animals reached 96.66%. The infestation percentage among jennets (97.5%) was slightly higher than that among jacks (96.25%). After morphological identification of the 3rd instar of larvae, all donkeys were found to be infested by G. intestinalis larvae. The histopathological examination of the affected stomach revealed severe necrosis of the gastric mucosa. Gastroscopic examination is the main diagnostic tool for examination of gastric lesions in the donkeys, so it is necessary as a routine diagnostic tool in donkeys’ examinations.

A two-year-old Arabian filly was referred with symptons of colic. Clinical examination revealed signs associated with endotoxemia. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen demonstrated severe distention of the stomach and distended loops of small intestine with reduced motility. With nasogastric intubation, eight liters of hemorrhagic reflux were retrieved. Gastroscopic examination showed a severe degree of gastric ulceration scored as equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) grade IV. Based on these findings, EGUS and gastroduodenitis (GD) were diagnosed. Initially, the horse was treated using parenteral pantoprazole, which was supplemented by adding enteral ranitidine and sucralfate when the horse ceased refluxing. The horse was discharged eleven days after presentation with a 75%-healing of the gastric ulcers. A control gastroscopic examination was performed thirty days after discharge showing a 90%-healing (EGUS Grade I). To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report in which pantoprazole in combination with ranitidine and sucralfate has been used to treat a severe degree of gastric ulceration.

ABSTRACTObjective: This work was designed to investigate and compare the possible protective effect of pharmacological doses of garlic and omega 3 againstgastric lesions induced by ethanol in mice.Methods: A total of 30 mice involved in the study were divided into five groups with 6 mice for each. Groups 1 (ulcer control) and 2 (normal control),Groups 3 (positive ulcer control treated with ranitidine 50 mg/kg), Groups 4 and 5 treated with garlic oil and omega 3 oil at doses 200 and 150 mg/kg,respectively. All groups treated orally by gastric gavage once daily for 14 days before starting gastric ulcer (GU) induction process by absolute ethanoladministration.Results: A treatment with garlic and omega 3 ameliorated the severity of gastric ulceration evidenced by reduced ulcer index area, increase %gastroprotection, increase mucus content, reduced erosions, and necrosis.Conclusion: Oral administration of pharmacological doses of garlic oil and omega 3 oil shows significant gastroprotection against GU models inducedby absolute ethanol confirmed by biochemical and histological data.Keywords: Gastric ulcer, Garlic, Omega 3, Gastroprotection.

Abstract The results show that incubation of gastric mucosal cells from rat at pH ~4.5 or in the presence of aspirin is associated with a specific increase in the activity of some acid-hydrolases. Intracellular glycoproteins, isolated by non-degradative techniques from rat or dog fundic mucosal cells, were found to be potential bio-substrates for these acid-hydrolyses. This may suggest that cleavage of the carbohydrate moieties of the intracellular and mucosal cell wall glycoproteins is a fundamental step in the development of gastric ulceration. A model for gastric lesions is proposed and discussed in the light of the results obtained.

Gastric lesions, especially ulceration, cause significant economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. The study was designed to assess its prevalence, distribution and pattern in pigs in south-western Nigeria. Slaughter house surveys were conducted on three government-established abattoirs in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states. Stomachs from 480 pigs were assessed for gross lesions, which were graded using a modification of a standard technique. Tissues from different regions of the stomach were routinely stained to assess histopathologic changes. Data were presented as frequency counts and analysed using analysis of variance and chi-square technique. Significance was determined at p ≤ 0.05. Gastric lesions were encountered across the four regions of the stomach with a point prevalence of 57.29%. The prevalence of lesions in the non-glandular region was 32.9%, with severe hyperkeratosis (13.13%) being most frequently observed (p < 0.05). Erosions were significantly higher in the cardia (8.54%) (p < 0.05), followed by fundus (8.33%). Gastric ulcers were significantly higher in the fundus (19.58%) (p < 0.05). Scars of healed ulcers and lacerations were also observed in the fundus (5.42%) (p < 0.05). The gastric lesion distribution across the four regions of the stomach and the occurrence of ulceration in the fundus showed an unusual pattern, which is rarely reported in other parts of the world. The reason for these findings in pigs in Nigeria is not fully understood; therefore, further studies are required to identify and manage these factors for increased productivity, improved animal welfare and enhanced food security.Keywords: prevalence; gastric; lesions; fundic ulcers; pigs

Meloidogyne hapla is one of the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes in temperate regions. This nematode has a wide host range with more than 500 plant taxa including roses. In Ethiopia, rose production has developed over the past 10 years to the second most important export market after coffee. Considering the high damage potential of M. hapla, infestation of roses in Ethiopia with this nematode could result in major economic losses. Therefore, awareness of this nematode species is extremely important. During two surveys conducted in August 2011 and April 2012, M. hapla was detected in soil samples from six out of nine rose producing farms located in the districts of Ziway, Holleta, Sebeta, and Menagesha. At infested farms, rose plants appeared stunted and less productive and often showed symptoms of chlorosis and wilting. Identification was based on morphological and morphometrical characters of females, males, and second-stage juveniles, which were all within the range of variability known for this species (4). Shape of juvenile stylet knobs, shape of male head, and perennial pattern of the females with characteristic punctuations between the anus and tail terminus were also typical for M. hapla. The morphological identification was confirmed by sequence analysis of the D2-D3 expansion segment of the 28S rDNA gene following amplification with the primers D2A (5′-ACAAGTACCGTGAGGGAAAGTT-3′) and D3B (5′-TCGGAAGGAACCAGCTACTA-3′) (1). PCR products were purified and sequenced at the Macrogene sequencing facility service (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Sequences were deposited in GenBank (KJ645427 to 33). The sequences were compared with previously published sequences in NCBI database and showed 96 to 100% sequence similarity with M. hapla accession nos. GQ130139, DQ328685, KF430798, and DQ145641. Unfortunately, comparison of sequences did not provide further information about the origin of this Ethiopian population, if it is native to Ethiopia or was imported with infected plant material. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first record of M. hapla occurring in Ethiopia. M. hapla is known as a serious pest of roses in colder climate regions. In Africa, it was previously reported from Tanzania (3) and South Africa (2). Thus, it appears that this species has now become also established in Ethiopia at higher altitudes (1,400 to 2,100 m above sea level) within the urban hinterland of Addis Ababa. Specific anatomy of the porcine stomach results in a high risk of ulceration in the pars oesophagea. A fully developed ulcer leads to intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding followed by clinical symptoms of chronic pain; thus, gastric ulceration in pigs causes significant production losses and serious welfare problems. Nowadays, gastric ulceration is common in domestic pigs throughout the world, but a great deal of attention has been directed at finishers. This paper was intended to provide new data on the prevalence of the disease in commercially reared highly prolific sows. The study was carried out on 329 culled sows from four commercial farms located in Northern Poland. The severity of gross pathological lesions of pars oesophagea was assigned to grade 0 (no lesions), 1 (parakeratosis), 2 (erosion), or 3 (gastric ulceration with or without stenosis) by a veterinary practitioner. Abattoir analysis revealed 66.6% of sows’ stomachs with some degree of alterations. Gastric ulceration was detected in 45.5% of examined organs. Parakeratosis and erosion were found in 1.2 and 15.8% of stomachs, respectively. The investigation did not find any oesphageal strictures. Our investigation of the problem in high health status hyper-prolific sows showed the lowest prevalence of gastric lesions (i.e., ulcerative and preulcerative alterations collectively) compared to earlier studies but the highest percentage of gastric ulcers. The results indicate that gastric ulcers may be a highly prevalent and underestimated welfare issue in sows in modern pig production, worth further studies focusing on particular risk factors related to feeding, genetics, management issues, and sows longevity.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of a dietary supplement on the treatment of equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS). Gastroscopy was performed on university riding horses of mixed breeds at two locations and only horses exhibiting gastric ulcers were selected to participate in this study (location A, n = 13; location B, n = 15). Gastric ulcer severity was assessed using two different methods depending on location before treatment (Pre). After gastroscopy, horses were fed the supplement in addition to their regular diet for 44 d (14-d adaptation period followed by 30-d feeding period). All horses were subjected to gastroscopy again at the end of the feeding period (Post) to evaluate changes in gastric lesions. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS. Individual horses were the experimental unit with dependent variables including severity and number of gastric ulcers. At location A, dependent variable included severity of gastric lesions with fixed effects of time (Pre and Post) and location (stall or pasture). For location B, dependent variables included severity and number of gastric lesions with fixed effects of time. Severity of gastric ulcers decreased at both locations in horses following the feeding period. Gastric lesion scores decreased from 2.2990 to 1.3760 (P = 0.0015) at location A and gastric lesion severity from 3.8000 to 2.5667 (P = 0.0322) at location B. No differences were found in gastric lesion scores at location A between horses housed in stalls or pastures (1.8750 and 1.8000; P = 0.7783). The number of gastric ulcers observed at location B were similar Pre and Post treatment (3.4667 and 3.5333; P = 0.8363). There were no changes in body condition score (P ≥ 0.2607), BW (P ≥ 0.4551), or behavior at either location. Results suggest that oral supplementation may decrease severity of gastric ulcers in horses participating in university riding programs.

Nowadays, endoscopic examination is a diagnostic tool gaining popularity in the management of gastrointestinal disorders in dogs and cats. Direct accessibility of the lumen of gastrointestinal tract combined with the mucosal biopsy provides a great diagnostic potential. Using endoscopy and endoscopically guided biopsy, one can conduct both macro- and microscopic assessment of lesions and perform many specialist adjunct examinations. Histopathological examination of mucosal biopsy specimens collected from the stomach and intestines allows us to distinguish between types of inflammations and to diagnose ulcerative, polypoid, and cancerous lesions.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the effect between alginate (Alg)-based raft-forming and Alg liquid on healing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastric ulcer in rats.Methods: Each of the 18 fasted rats was given 1 ml acidified pepsin. Then, rats were divided into three groups. Each group consisted of six rats. Group 1 (negative control) was orally given 1 ml distilled water, Group 2 was given 1 ml Alg-based raft-forming liquid, and Group 3 was given 1 ml Alg liquid. Then, the abdomen of rats was incised under anesthesia with ketamine, and then both their pylorus and the forestomach were ligated to form gastric reflux. After 4 hrs, all rats were killed with chloroform and their esophagus and stomach were examined macroscopically and microscopically (histopathology).Results: On macroscopic observation, all of the Group 1 rats (negative control) showed esophageal lesions and gastric lesions. Four rats of Group 2 (given Alg-based raft-forming) showed no esophageal lesion and two more rats showed a slight lesion, but all of the tested rats showed gastric lesions. All of the rats of the Group 3 (given Alg liquid) showed esophageal lesions, but no gastric lesion on four rats and slight lesion on two rats. Microscopic observations showed that all of the Group 1 rats (negative control) showed esophageal erosion and gastric mucosa lesions. Rats of the Group 2 (given Alg-based raft-forming) showed almost no esophageal erosion, but all of them showed erosion of gastric mucosa. Rats of the Group 3 (given Alg liquid) showed esophageal erosion in all tested rats, but almost no gastric mucosa lesion.Conclusion: Alg-base raft-forming liquid is more effective in healing of GERD than Alg liquid. However, Alg-liquid is more effective in healing of gastric ulcer than Alg-based raft-forming liquid.
