Straipsnyje aptariama Tomo Akviniečio laiko samprata, parodomas nuotolis tarp šios sampratos ir Aristotelio laiko suvokimo, nors abu mąstytojus formaliai vienija tas pats laiko apibrėžimas. Analizuojami pagrindiniai šio apibrėžimo elementai – laikas, judėjimas, žmogaus siela. Pereinant nuo aristoteliškos substancijų ontologijos (ovσία) į tomistiškąją buvimo akto (actus essendi) metafiziką, atskleidžiama judėjimo, žmogaus sielos ir laiko buvimo aktų vienovė. Maitinamas dieviškojo kūrimo veiksmo, laikas pasirodo kaip įtampa, kaip pati žmogaus siela, kuri, „matuodama“ ontologinį būtybės judėjimą, jo nuolatinį prasidėjimo momentą (dabartį) paverčia tęstiniu, pridėdama praeities ir ateities dimensijas.Pagrindiniai žodžiai: laikas, judėjimas, siela, intelektas, buvimo aktas, kūrimas iš nebūties. The Concept of Time According to Thomas AquinasPovilas Aleksandravičius SummaryThe article explains Thomas Aquinas’ concept of time on the basis of his metaphysics of being. At the same time, it shows the distance between his concept and the Aristotle’s conception of time, despite the fact that, formally, both thinkers used the same definition of time. The article analyzes the main elements of this definition through their interaction: time, motion and human soul. The journey from the Aristotle’s ontology of substances (υοσία) to the Thomistic metaphysics of the act of being (actus essendi) uncovers the unity among between motion, human soul and the acts of being of time. Nurtured by the act of divine creation, time appears as a tension, as the human soul itself, which ‘measures’ the ontological movement of a being and makes continuous its continual moments of beginning, by adding the dimensions of past and future. Keywords: Thomas Aquinas, time, motion, soul, intellect, act of being, creation from nothing.

This chapter explores the fundamental vision of the human being at the core of Aquinas’ anthropology. Aquinas has typically been construed as defending a fundamentally ‘Aristotelian’ vision of the human being. I show that this label has generated a skewed reading of Aquinas. Accordingly, this chapter does not lay claim to identify what it would take for an anthropology to be authentically ‘Thomistic’. Instead, it makes a proposal concerning what I argue is the ‘guiding vision’ of Aquinas’ anthropology: namely the ‘distinctive unity of the human’. Aquinas prioritizes this notion of distinctive unity in the different areas of his anthropology. I explore how this distinctive unity is expressed (a) in Aquinas’ account of the human soul as the ‘horizon’ of the bodily and spiritual worlds, and (b) in his definition of the human being as ‘rational animal’.

Abstract The paper compares the two components of the Stoic definition of pathos, the logico-linguistic component and the physiological, ‘pneumatic’ one, in order to examine the role that each of them plays in the onset of pathos, its persistence in the human soul, its possible eradication. The analysis is focused on anger (ὀργή) which reveals some peculiarities, especially as regards its logical structure, due to the fact that this passion seems to be the combination of two different feelings. The anger indeed is classified as a species of desire but the description of its onset also includes pain.

The purpose of the text is to describe and analyze the contemplative life as an ideal of beatitude in the moral philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. By assimilating, remodeling and criticizing the ancient and medieval philosophical-theological tradition, Thomas structures an original and complex synthesis, immersing itself in the essence of the divine nature through knowledge and in the human soul through the contemplative life, and from there to erect the pillars of an ontology theocentric, where God is the supreme good and promoter of human happiness, the first principle of all reality. From him comes the world, man and all creatures, and everything tends to return to its essence, in a special the man. For this reason, God is the alpha and omega, propitiator of the deepest beatitude. The text is organized into four items: the context of beatitude, the excellence of the intellectual soul by the activity of the contemplative life, the reasons for the contemplative life and the comparison between the active and the contemplative life.

Individual acts of violence are always situated in the context of a community of relationships with others. Anger, as a passion, can be used for good or ill and this chapter will explore ways in which anger can be expressed. This chapter will address two broad questions on biosocial capacities for anger and two theological questions. In what sense is the human capacity for anger shaped through biological or cultural influences? What specific contexts reduce the likelihood of anger and what are the evolutionary advantages? In what sense might anger become sinful in theological terms? How might God’s anger be perceived in Augustine and contemporary theology? This chapter will begin by exploring evolutionary aspects of aggression and how these are related to social psychological categories. In philosophical terms, Aristotle’s definition of anger and the specific criteria for its presence are important, but so is the difference between anger and hatred. Thomas Aquinas defines anger as one of the moral passions and works out in what circumstances it become sinful. Thomistic discussion is still relevant to contemporary analysis even though Aquinas did not have access to the evolutionary and psychological data that are available in a contemporary context.

Thomas de Vio, better known as Cajetan, has long been considered to be the outstanding commentator on the philosophical thought of Thomas Aquinas. He has had a great influence not only on discussions about Aquinas’ theory of analogical predication regarding God and creatures but also on discussions about Aquinas’ fundamental notions of essence and existence. On both counts his interpretations are at variance with Aquinas himself. He also set himself in opposition to Aquinas when he denied in his later writings that the immortality of the human soul could be demonstrated, arguing that it is a doctrine that must be accepted simply on faith, like the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation. His explication of Aquinas’ cognitive psychology is an interesting development that goes beyond Aquinas.

The materialistic premise supposes that a patient’s reduced brain activity indicates that the mind is beginning to approach nonexistence. Such persons may not be brain dead, but they have a life that is close enough to death to allow us to treat them with a certain disregard. For the Catholic, this overlooks the enduring presence of the soul and its two spiritual powers of intellect and will. St. Thomas Aquinas is our best guide to exploring the implications of this view for patients in states of diminished consciousness. The externally observable activity of the brain, even when dramatically lessened, does not represent any loss of the powers of the soul, which continue to function through a combination of natural and divine influences.

The Concept of Islamic criminal law incorporates particular principles such as protecting the religion i.e Islam, preserving life and the sanctity of human soul, safeguarding the soundness of mind, preserving the heredity, property and dignity. In case of Qazaf (accusation against one's chastity), the reason behind this ruling is to protect the dignity of human being from wild slander and libel. As we are in the middle of information technology era, a number of people committing crimes have distinctly increased including Qazaf involving people's life, honor, and property. Surprisingly, this kind of crime has been widely spread for no specific purpose. According to Syariah law, any person who accuses other people committing zina or sodomy must provide with four witnesses otherwise he or she shall be inflicted with hadd for committing Qazaf. The issue in this matter is that: is it a requirement for the accuser, in the absence of witnesses, to apply oath to prove his or her accusation and does the aforementioned matter applied to the accused? This article is intended to explain the concept of oath, its legal injunction and its divisions according to Islamic law. Apart from that, it would also clarify particular situations which oath is permitted to be administered as a mean of proof, in the case of Allah's right or human's right. The authors intend to elucidate the definition of Qazaf and its application, offenses under Qazaf, the mode of proof, and other issues pertaining to sodomy. The finding of this study shows that oath could be applied to deny the allegation of committing zina or sodomy if the plaintiff makes a request to the judge ordering the defendant to administer oath in the absence of witnesses. This ruling could be found in Shafi'l school of law. Nevertheless, Imam Malik and Ahmad opined that oath could only be applied when it is related to human's right such as property but not to Allah's right for instance punishment for Qazaf. It is hope that the public would gain clear picture from this writing regarding with the concept of oath and Qazaf under Islamic perspective.

Between the Rainbow and the Crystal Glass: Echo in Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski as a Species of Refraction in the Light of His Commentary on Summa theologica by Thomas Aquinas The aim of this essay is to highlight an important gap in the research into the works of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (1595–1640), Jesuit neo-Latin poet and philosopher, namely the fact that his still unpublished lectures on one God in three persons and on angels, held in Vilnius Academy in the years 1631–1633, have remained largely unexplored by researchers so far. The main thesis is that these thomistic commentaries can considerably deepen our understanding of the dialectical and theological context of Sarbiewski’s poetry. For example, they shed new light on his Marian imagery (inter alia, the usage of the invocation ‘purum sine fraude vitrum’), or on his way of avoiding the danger of the infinite regress of concepts as being similar to mirror reflections. The argument concentrates on the figure of echo in two poems: the praise of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz and the ode Secunda leuca seu Vaca as influenced by a new version of the Litany of Loreto (Litaniae Deiparae Virginis Mariae). It makes use of the definition of echo as taught in the Coimbra Jesuit Aristotelian courses. The phenomenon of echo is taken together with other species of refraction: the rainbow and reflection (Aristotle, Posterior Analytics, 98a.24–29), and set against the background of new technologies, such as the production of crystal mirrors.
