Interphase sliding is an important phenomenon of high temperature plasticity. In order to study the microstructural changes associated with it, as well as its influence on the strain rate dependence on stress and temperature, plane boundaries were obtained by welding together two polycrystals of Cu-Zn alloys having the face centered cubic and body centered cubic structures respectively following the procedure described in (1). These specimens were then deformed in shear along the interface on a creep machine (2) at the same temperature as that of the diffusion treatment so as to avoid any precipitation. The present paper reports observations by conventional and high voltage electron microscopy of the microstructure of both phases, in the vicinity of the phase boundary, after different creep tests corresponding to various deformation conditions.Foils were cut by spark machining out of the bulk samples, 0.2 mm thick. They were then electropolished down to 0.1 mm, after which a hole with thin edges was made in an area including the boundary

Superalloy René 77 is very wide used for turbine blades, turbine disks of aircraft engines which work up to 1050°C. These elements are generally produced by the investment casting method. Turbine blades produced by conventional precision casting methods have coarse and inhomogeneous grain structure. Such a material often does not fulfil basic requirements, which concern mechanical properties for the stuff used in aeronautical engineering. The incorporation of controlled grain size improved mechanical properties. This control of grain size in the casting operation was accomplished by the control of processing parameters such as casting temperature, mould preheating temperature, and the use of grain nucleates in the face of the mould. For nickel and cobalt based superalloys, it was found that cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4) has the best nucleating effect. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of the inoculant’s content (cobalt aluminate) in the surface layer of the ceramic mould on the microstructure and mechanical properties at high temperature of nickel based superalloy René 77. For this purpose, the ceramic moulds were made with different concentration of cobalt aluminate in the primary slurry was from 0 to 10% mass. in zirconium flour. Stepped and cylindrical samples were casted for microstructure and mechanical examinations. The average grain size of the matrix ( phase), was determined on the stepped samples. The influence of surface modification on the grain size of up to section thickness was considered. The microstructure investigations with the use of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) enable to examine the influence of the surface modification on the morphology of ’ phase and carbides precipitations. Verification of the influence of CoAl2O4 on the mechanical properties of castings were investigated on the basis of results obtained form creep tests.

When underground space requires excavation in areas below the water table, the foundation system suffers from buoyancy, which leads to the uplifting of the superstructure. A deep foundation system can be used; however, in cases where a hard layer is encountered, high driving forces and corresponding noises cause civil complaints in urban areas. Micropiles can be an effective alternative option, due to their high performance despite a short installation depth. Pressurized grouting is used with a packer to induce higher interfacial properties between micropile and soil. In this study, the field performance of micropiles installed using gravitational grouting or pressure-grouted using either a geotextile packer or rubber packer was comparatively evaluated by tension and creep tests. Micropiles were installed using pressure grouting in weak and fractured zones. As results, the pressure-grouted micropiles showed more stable and stronger behaviors than ones installed using the gravitational grouting. Moreover, the pressure-grouted micropile installed using the rubber packer showed better performance than the one using the geotextile packer.

The thermoplastic and thermoset laminates reinforced with different fibers generate variations in the laminated composite mechanical behavior. This work aims to analyze thermoplastic and thermoset composites creep behavior with a reduced number of experiments, applying curve-fitting analytical models (Weibull and Findley) and statistical approach (ANOVA, F-test, and SRM) in order to describe creep behavior. Creep tests were carried out using a design of experiments to define parameter levels, aiming to reduce the number of the experiments, keeping reliability relevance. The temperature shows a stronger influence of creep deformation compared with the use of distinct materials. Thermoplastic matrices seem to be more sensitive to deformation, decreasing the reinforcement contribution. On the other hand, the creep resistance of the thermoset matrix conducts a significant contribution of strain behavior for the reinforcement used. The Findley model showed a temperature-dependent response. While, the Weibull-based model exhibits temperature and material-dependence, ensuring a greater sensitivity range of the parameters applied, an essential factor for a more realistic method description.

The mechanical properties of low-pressure plasma sprayed (LPPS) MCrAlY (M = Ni, Co) bond coats, Amdry 386, Amdry 9954 and oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) Amdry 9954 (named Amdry 9954 + ODS) were investigated after annealing in three atmospheres: Ar–O2, Ar–H2O, and Ar–H2–H2O. Freestanding bond coats were investigated to avoid any influence from the substrate. Miniaturized cylindrical tensile specimens were produced by a special grinding process and then tested in a thermomechanical analyzer (TMA) within a temperature range of 900–950 °C. Grain size and phase fraction of all bond coats were investigated by EBSD before testing and no difference in microstructure was revealed due to annealing in various atmospheres. The influence of annealing in different atmospheres on the creep strength was not very pronounced for the Co-based bond coats Amdry 9954 and Amdry 9954 + ODS in the tested conditions. The ODS bond coats revealed significantly higher creep strength but a lower strain to failure than the ODS-free Amdry 9954. The Ni-based bond coat Amdry 386 showed higher creep strength than Amdry 9954 due to the higher fraction of the β-NiAl phase. Additionally, its creep properties at 900 °C were much more affected by annealing in different atmospheres. The bond coat Amdry 386 annealed in an Ar–H2O atmosphere showed a significantly lower creep rate than the bond coat annealed in Ar–O2 and Ar–H2–H2O atmospheres.

Preserving airport pavement means guarantying the safety operation of aircraft movements. There are four aspects that cause progressive pavement deterioration, i.e. the construction design and process, selected material, and maintenance management. One of the traffic aspects, jet engine exhaust, has not been discovered yet. The load pattern of the jet exhaust follows the schedule of aircraft traffic. The assumption held in this research is that the thermal load during aircraft movement may generate a high temperature, which is induced into pavement layers. The objective of this research is to determine the temperature gradient in the pavement, caused by the jet exhaust. This paper discusses the process of determining the temperature gradient in four stages, i.e. by carrying out the gap analysis, evaluation of pavement structures, determination of the load path and the magnitude, and defining the temperature gradient. The temperature gradient in the pavement layer is determined through the development of a model of cyclic loading. The thermal cyclic load follows the aircraft schedule pattern. The pavement temperature receives the thermal cyclic load of the sinusoid of solar radiation. The results indicate that the temperature of the pavement is increased and pavement temperature rises by 35 °C. However, after 60 seconds the remaining temperature of the pavement layer decreases to the initial temperature, which is caused by solar radiation.
