The purpose of this study is to grasp the behavior characteristics of a single batter pile under vertical load by performing a model test. The changes in the resistance of the pile, the bending moment, etc. by the slope of the pile and the relative density of the ground were analyzed. According to the results of the test, when the relative density of the ground was medium and high, the bearing capacity kept increasing when the angle of the pile moved from a vertical position to 20°, and then decreased gradually after 20°. The bending moment of the pile increased as the relative density of the ground and the batter angle of the pile increased. The position of the maximum bending moment came closer to the ground surface as the batter angle of the pile further increased, and it occurred at a point of 5.2~6.7 times the diameter of the pile from the ground surface.

Tungsten (W) has the unique combination of excellent thermal properties, low sputter yield, low hydrogen retention, and acceptable activation. Therefore, W is presently the main candidate for the first wall and armor material for future fusion devices. However, its intrinsic brittleness and its embrittlement during operation bears the risk of a sudden and catastrophic component failure. As a countermeasure, tungsten fiber-reinforced tungsten (Wf/W) composites exhibiting extrinsic toughening are being developed. A possible Wf/W production route is chemical vapor deposition (CVD) by reducing WF6 with H2 on heated W fabrics. The challenge here is that the growing CVD-W can seal gaseous domains leading to strength reducing pores. In previous work, CVD models for Wf/W synthesis were developed with COMSOL Multiphysics and validated experimentally. In the present article, these models were applied to conduct a parameter study to optimize the coating uniformity, the relative density, the WF6 demand, and the process time. A low temperature and a low total pressure increase the process time, but in return lead to very uniform W layers at the micro and macro scales and thus to an optimized relative density of the Wf/W composite. High H2 and low WF6 gas flow rates lead to a slightly shorter process time and an improved coating uniformity as long as WF6 is not depleted, which can be avoided by applying the presented reactor model.

AbstractThe cylindrical samples of TC4 titanium alloy prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) were compressed with hot deformation of 70% on the thermosimulation machine of Gleeble-1500. The temperature of the processes ranged from 850°C to 1,050°C, and the strain rates varied between 0.001 and 5 s−1. The relative density of the sintered and compressed samples was measured by the Archimedes principle. During hot deformation, the microstructure of the sample was observed. The results show that the average relative density of the samples was 90.2% after SPS. And the relative density was about 98% after the hot deformation of 70%. Under high temperature (>950°C), the sensitivity of flow stress to temperature was reduced. At low strain rate (0.001 s−1), the increase in the deformation temperature promoted the growth of dynamic recrystallization (DRX). At the same temperature, the increase in strain rate slowed down the growth of DRX grains. And the variation tendency was shown from the basket-weave structure to the Widmanstätten structure at a low strain rate (<0.1 s−1), with increase in the strain rate.
