The Impact

Since the construction industry is responsible for 30% of the CO2 emissions, one way to reduce the impact of the construction activity is to substitute ordinary Portland cement by pozzolanic materials. The application of using agricultural waste in the production of pozzolanic material is technically feasible, due to the calcination of organic materials and leaving ashes with a fine particle size and high SiO2 content. In the present, it is discussed the pozzolanic effect of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) from Taretan, Michoacán, Mexico, on the physical and mechanical properties of a portland cement mortar. Test specimens were prepared based on replacing sugarcane bagasse ash percentages of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 %, relative to the weight of cement. To validate the mechanical properties of the specimens, tensile, flexural and compressive strength was determine. The porosity of the mortar was determined by means of non-destructive ultrasonic testing of pulse rate and electrical resistivity. The contribution of this paper was determine the bond strength of an overlay mortar with SCBA bonded to the concrete substrate by pull-out tests. The results showed that the addition of the sugarcane bagasse ash improved the mechanical strength, adherence of the mortar to concrete, and decreases the porosity on large curing times. Hence, it is suggested the use of Portland pozzolan cement containing sugarcane bagasse ash pozzolan, with the added benefit on the use of agricultural waste.

This article is focused on cement based composites. Two cements differing in mineralogical composition are utilised as main binder in composites mixtures. Results of measured physical parameters of studied materials are presented. For the sake of comparison, a reference material with Portland cement was also prepared. Basic physical properties (measured by water vacuum saturation method and by helium pycnometry), characterizations of pore system (determined by mercury porosimetry) and mechanical properties are the matter of this study. Composites show various open porosity; the results of open porosity of materials containing special cements show higher values, in comparison with composite based on Portland cement. This fact of course influences other material characteristics - mainly mechanical properties.

Study Results

The paper deals with modification of cement composite and concrete with nanocellulose in low and high density. The author presents the study results of the influence of nanocellulose on the cement composite hardening process, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of heavy concrete. The influence of the used additive on the rheological and strength characteristics of concrete is revealed. A new method is proposed to improve the material performance.

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo determinar la influencia de la adición del dióxido de titanio (TiO2) en el mortero de cemento Pórtland Tipo I. La investigación es descriptiva, correlacional, explicativo, con diseño experimental, longitudinal, prospectivo y estudio de cohorte. Se elaboró una mezcla patrón y tres mezclas de mortero con 5%, 7.5% y 10% de contenido de TiO2 como reemplazo del volumen de cemento para las propiedades autolimpiantes se realizó el ensayo de rodamina e intemperismo. La incorporación de dióxido de titanio disminuyó la resistencia a la compresión, incrementó la fluidez y tasa de absorción de agua; la prueba de rodamina dio que el mortero sin actividad fotocatalítico no contenía TiO2 porque no cumple con los factores de fotodegradación R4 y R26. Mediante la exposición de paneles al intemperismo favoreciendo la propiedad autolimpiante de los morteros con adición de TiO2 (5%). The research results on the development of fire-retardant composite cement mortar mixtures on exfoliated vermiculite and volcanic ash with the use of a multifunctional additive are presented D-5. Compositions of fire-retardant composite mortars, which make it possible to significantly improve the physical and mechanical properties of mortar mixtures and mortars, are proposed. Introduction of a multifunctional supplement D-5 in mortar mixtures makes it possible to improve the composite mortar mixtures properties and improve the solution characteristics. Replacement of finely dispersed fraction of exfoliated vermiculite d<0,63 mm volcanic ash by volume in mortar mixtures does not cause a noticeable increase in the solution density, while their strength characteristics increase. The developed composite mortar mixtures meet the requirements of GOST 28013–98 and have a low-cost price due to volcanic ash use.

ABSTRACT Portland cement is extensively used as a binder in concrete production. However, with Portland cement production, 5% of the natural resources used in this production are consumed, constituting 5–7% of the total CO2 emission. In order to mitigate the environmental problems associated with cement production, styrene-butadiene rubber latex was used as cement replacement up to 20%. In this study, compressive strength, flexural strength, unit weight, water absorption, open porosity, water sorptivity and the chloride ion permeability of Portland cement mortar mixtures modified by styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polymeric latex were investigated. For this purpose, the sand/cement ratio and the water/cement ratio were kept constant as 3/1 and 0.5, respectively. In addition to the control mixture containing no polymer, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 wt.% of cement was replaced with SBR. In this way, seven mortar mixtures were prepared. Mixed curing (wet cure and dry cure) method was applied to the mortar specimens. Results showed that up to a 5% replacement level, it is possible to improve the mechanical properties of cement mortars with SBR latex addition. However, at a 10% and 20% replacement level, SBR had a significant detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of polymer modified mortars. However, the transport properties decreased with the incorporation rate of SBR latex and the detrimental effect of SBR replacement was more pronounced in 20% SBR mortar mixtures.

This research evaluated, with the of the analyses of variance (ANOVA), a composite material based on epoxy matrix phase reinforced with Portland cement (CP-II) particles (0%wt [100%wt of resin], 20%wt, 40%wt, 60%wt). The response-variable investigated were modulus of elasticity (E) and compressive strength (S), bulk density (ρB), apparent density (ρA) and porosity (P). The highest values of the modulus of elasticity were provided from the composites manufactured with 40wt% of cement addition. The inclusion of 60% of cement implies in a reduction in the mechanical properties when compared with the results of the composite manufactured with 40% of cement. For the physical properties, the gradually inclusion of cement provides increasing in the density of the composites, and reduce the porosity of the materials manufactured.
