Impact Force Comparison of Polymers: Molded-Notch Versus Cut-Notch Using the ASTM D 256 Izod Impact Test Method

Abstract Measurements have been taken on an experimental rotor-bearing test rig which consists of a full size gas turbine shaft supported by two five-pad tilting-pad journal bearings. The impact test method was applied by exciting one end of the shaft in-situ by means of a hammer blow. Impact forces and response displacements were collected and analysed with suitable corrections for runout effect. Averaged frequency response spectra thus obtained were used in a parameter estimation procedure to calculate the dynamic coefficients of the tested tilting-pad journal bearing. An analytical single degree-of-freedom model was employed and one of the input parameters in the mechanical model, the effective mass, was found to significantly influence the estimated results. The measured stiffness and damping coefficients are compared with results predicted by a bearing design program. Possible sources of discrepancies between experimental and theoretical results are discussed.

Bolted joints are a major part of wind energy plants. Due to climatic conditions, they are often exposed to temperatures far below the freezing point. Together with the multiaxial state of stress, which results from the notch effect of the thread, and possible dynamic overloads during operation, sufficient ductility of the material is needed. The state of the art method to investigate the ductile behavior of fasteners is the Charpy pendulum impact test with a V-notched specimen. According to international standard DIN EN ISO 898-1 [1] respectively ASTM F568M-07 [2], fasteners made of carbon steel and alloy steel with a body centered cubic lattice structure can be used for temperatures down to 223 K (−50°C, −58°F) as long as a minimum impact energy of 27 J at 253 K (−20°C, −4°F) is met. As there are several disadvantages in using this test method for fasteners, a detailed examination of existing test methods and design concepts is necessary to find alternatives to the Charpy pendulum impact test. Extensive quasi-static and dynamic material tests were conducted on fasteners with property classes 5.6, 10.9 and 12.9 in a temperature range between 203 K (−70°C, −94°F) and room temperature 293 K (20°C, 68°F). Both mechanical properties and the influence of different specimen geometries were evaluated. Analytical concepts for the description of the low temperature applicability of different steels were analyzed.

The effect of the notch depth on the impact toughness of the adhesively bonded steel butt joint under Izod impact test is studied using both the finite element method and experimental method. The results obtained from numerical simulation showed that the response time with the peak stress Seqv occurred becomes little longer when the notch depth increased from 2 mm to 8 mm. And a negative longitudinal stress occurred when there is an 8 mm depth notch which might be beneficial to subject impact load. The results from the experiments showed that the effect of notch depth is evidently on the Izod impact properties. The impact energy absorbed by unit area of joint is increased as the notch depth increase

The complete evaluation of the side vehicle structure and the occupant protection is only possible by means of the full scale side impact crash test. But, auto part manufacturers such as door trim makers can not conduct the test especially when the vehicle is under the developing process. The main objective of this study is to obtain the design guidelines by a simple component level impact test. The relationship between the target absorption energy and impactor speed were examined using the energy absorbed by the door trim. Since each different vehicle type required different energy levels on the door trim. A simple impact test method was developed to estimate abdominal injury by measuring reaction force of the impactor. The reaction force will be converted to a certain level of the energy by the proposed formula. The target of absorption energy for door trim only and the impact speed of simple impactor are derived theoretically based on the conservation of energy. With calculated speed of dummy and the effective mass of abdomen, the energy allocated in the abdomen area of door trim was calculated. The impactor speed can be calculated based on the equivalent energy of door trim absorbed during the full crash test. With the proposed design procedure for the door trim by a simple impact test method was demonstrated to evaluate the abdominal injury. This paper describes a study that was conducted to determine sensitivity of several design factors for reducing abdominal injury values using the matrix of orthogonal array method. In conclusion, with theoretical considerations and empirical test data, the main objective, standardization of door trim design using the simple impact test method was established.

The effect of the impact velocity on the responses of the adhesively bonded steel butt joint during Izod impact test and the failure procedure is studied using the finite element method software ABAQUS. The results obtained show that the failure time of the element becomes little shorter when the impact velocity increased from 3.2 m/s to 10.2 m/s. The peak value of the Seqv in element 1 increases first and then decreased when the impact velocity reached 4.2 m/s. When the impact velocity is higher than 6.2 m/s, the peak value of the Seqv increased again as the impact velocity increased until 10.2 m/s. It is recommended that the impact velocity of 3.2 m/s or 5.2 m/s is suitable for Izod impact test for the adhesively bonded steel butt joint.
