Test Method for Evaluating the Scuffing Load Capacity of Oils (FZG Visual Method)

Screw grooved annular seals are used in many heavy duty pumps such as boiler feed pumps. These annular seals have a significant effect on rotordynamic characteristics of the pumps. Studies on the dynamic characteristics of plain and circumferentially grooved annular seals have been published by many researchers. However, published works on screw grooved seals are few, and pump designers have not fully recognized the basic characteristics of screw grooved seals. Extensive experimental studies have been conducted for determining the basic characteristics of screw grooved seals. The leakage characteristics, load capacity, and dynamic characteristics for rotordynamic analysis were determined by using a specially designed test facility and test method. The test results were compared to the results of plain seals [3] and the basic differences were extracted for effective application of screw grooved seals.

Withdrawal capacity is defined as the amount of resistance to withdrawal force in a plane normal to the surface panel. It is caused by density and internal bonding of the panel. Withdrawal capacity is one of the factors that affect the load carrying capacity of the timber connection apart from embedment strength and fastener yield moment. The European Yield Model (EYM) theory is used to predict the load capacity of the timber connection under lateral load. The sample panel is made of Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) using Mengkulang timber species. Although Mengkulang Glulam has a good weight to strength ratio as compared to typical concrete material but it is still not widely used in Malaysia. This is mainly due to a very limited exposure on the Mengkulang Glulam usage. Withdrawal capacity is determined according to the ASTM D1761-12 using one-hole test method. Also, the ASTM D1761-12, EC5:2008 is used to determine the withdrawal capacity output. In this experiment a mechanical fastener, bolt; 14mm and 20mm were used to fix the sample panels onto the test jig. The bolt diameter influenced the withdrawal capacity. It was observed that the withdrawal capacity of 20mm bolt diameter was better than the 14mm diameter with an increment of 48.6%.

Long standing demands of advanced gas turbine engine oils to operate with increasing temperatures have resulted in formulations with reduced boundary lubrication. The desire to introduce corrosion resistance bearing and gear steels with more chemically benign surfaces compared to conventional steels presents significant challenges for boundary lubrication. A scuffing load capacity test method highlights oil and bearing steel response to mixed-film lubrication and wear. Through traction measurements the test method differentiates additive type and concentration with respect to wear and scuffing performance. The introduction of stainless steels 440C and Pyrowear 675 significantly reduces scuffing performance compared to conventional M50 bearing steel. The scuffing load capacity screening tests with advanced additive candidates show feasibility to significantly increase tribology performance with stainless steels.
