The article presents different definitionsfrom different disciplines for the concept of “Awareness” and the central role of science in shaping the way teachers think and change their perceptions. In a period of the lack of stability, diversity, and heterogeneity in academic, cultural, and socioeconomic terms, teaching and education become a complicated and demanding tasks for the teacher. The teacher who meets the complex educational challenges findsit difficultto adjust to accelerated and endless social, scientific,and technological changes and to change the perception of his role from a source of knowledge to a transfer of knowledge. Most teachers of our time were not trained to be conscious of the influencesof globalization on the lives of the students and communities, differences, equality, and globalization that characterize society as a whole and are required of the teachers in society of our time. The author definesthe teachers’ consciousness as an Interdisciplinary Category. The increase of the teachers’ awareness of the processes of thinking and doing, as a result of the internal and external events around them, may help teachers map their abilities, needs, and expectations, understand the factors of their behavior, plan their course for the future, and definefor themselves goals commensurate with the requirements. The awareness grants the teachers an opportunity to take responsibility over the knowledge and thus may change the school experience.

Abstract The mosaic approach to conflict requires redefinition of some doctrinal concepts that can influence the way in which the response to the risks and threats to the state of security, the future of military actions and the acceptance that the technological development will be a factor for the success of the wars future. The issues addressed could be important elements in the architecture of a possible future strategic concept of integrated use of the basic elements of national power - diplomatic, informational, military and economic. At the same time, the results of this theoretical approach can contribute, as a reference point, to proposing viable and innovative doctrinal and operational solutions to counteract aggressions to national security, regardless of their nature or origin.

The way mathematics instruction accommodates the large technological changes sweeping society will profoundly affect the ability of young people to adjust to everyday life situations and perform efficiently in the skilled professions of the future. In particular, continued thoughtful attention must be given to the role of microcomputers in all aspects of the teaching of mathematics. Many significant issues in this area will need to be discussed and important decisions made in the months ahead. We need to set high expectations in these discussions and the decisions that follow from them. Settling for what can be done easily or selling short the talents of our students or our colleagues will be a mistake.

The creative process in Hollywood’s movie industry is the result of a complex combination of symbolic elements arising from imaginations of screenwriters, directors, executives, marketing experts and producers. This article analyzes the anatomy of the creative process inserted in the logic of production of major studios. The earliest scripts of three movies—Back to the Future, Blade Runner and Star Wars: A New Hope—and their theatrical movie versions are compared to find some patterns in the formation of the imaginary during the creative process in mainstream productions. The theoretical approach is mainly based on Gilbert Durand’s theories about the imaginary.

English:This essay focuses on the “oughtabiographies” of the contemporary lesbian writer Rebecca Brown, which function as imaginative vehicles with which the author (re)writes her own past the way it should have been. Thus her work will be seen to extend the realm of longing – usually reserved for the future – into the past, thereby highlighting the role of desire and the value of “narrative truth” in personal history writing. Moreover, Brown’s active reworkings of her personal past allow for a critical reappraisal of the concept of nostalgia, which is usually dismissed as conservative or passive.Dutch:Dit essay bespreekt de “oughtabiographies” van de hedendaagse lesbische schrijfster Rebecca Brown, waarin deze auteur haar eigen verleden herschrijft tot wat het had moeten zijn. Zo toont Browns werk de invloed van verlangens – die normaal gezien tot het domein van de toekomst behoren – op (het denken over) het verleden, en benadrukt het het belang van “narrative truth” in de context van persoonlijke geschiedschrijving. Bovendien laat Browns actieve herwerking van haar verleden een kritische herwaardering toe van het concept nostalgie, dat vaak als conservatief of passief wordt afgeschilderd.

The way we tell stories shapes what we are: it articulates the way we position ourselves in relation to the world. This article explores how immersive practices, as used in virtual reality and intermedial performance, provoke novel dynamics between artist and audience that no longer fit within Western traditions of aesthetic exchange and furthermore challenge our understanding of narrative production and reception. It proposes that new ways of reasoning are needed to allow audience agency and the evolving role of the artist to be explored more fully than is currently possible in mainstream theatre scholarship. One source that can provide a model for considering the dynamics between audience and performer in immersive performance is the Indigenous story systems of Australia. There is a significant synergy between the structure and operation of First Nation songlines and contemporary immersive performance. This is explored with reference to the work of contemporary anthropologists and Indigenous scholars and to recent immersive work from the companies Kaleider and Theatre Conspiracy. The article considers how both ancient narratives and contemporary immersive practices require people to engage with data/ physical space in a specific manner in order for stories to be realised. Furthermore, both bestow creative responsibility and the role of custodian on the user, through whose actions narrative is manifested. Immersive performance challenges assumptions about how information is generated, processed, and passed on, and the power structures involved in such exchanges. This research explores how non-traditional narrative practices can assist the debate about the future of storytelling.

AbstractThis article is intended as a new departure in the theory of the constitution and comprehension of discourse. It begins by extending the notions, familiar in the field of text linguistics, of cohesion and coherence, in such a way as to explain the kinds of necessary relations that exist amongst texts to create larger bodies of discourse that are cognitively real, in just the way that texts are cognitively real. The theoretical approach that has been adopted for this purpose is the Cognitive Discourse Analysis approach of Teun van Dijk. It depends upon the constitutive role of propositions. I go on to claim that the potential in this approach for explaining the nature of texts, their relations within broader realms of discourse, and their subjective comprehension extends to some notoriously difficult areas of research, including the nature of the so-called abstract concepts. Furthermore, it seems that the hypotheses advanced here are eminently testable. What I find especially promising in an approach based on a theory of propositions and intertextual relations is that it potentially opens up the way to a foundational theory that is universally applicable to texts of all conceivable types. For example, where literature has been conceived of as existing in opposition to other non-literary genres, and therefore requiring a branch of theory all its own, the attempt here is rather to show that texts of all types are mutually implicated in interesting ways and that identifying a separate cognitive function of ‘literariness’ is not always and everywhere the best way to understand literature. In the later pages of this article I will attempt to show how narrative genres exemplify certain of the discourse processes I have in mind, particularly how narrative (macro) propositions supply meanings that can be nominalised as abstract nouns.

The idea that mechanisms are crucially important to differentiate between genuine and spurious causal relations is ubiquitous both in the philosophical and in the social scientific literature. Yet philosophers of the social sciences have seldom attempted to spell out systematically the way in which mechanistic reasoning or evidence are concretely used to deal with spurious association and the problem of confounders in the social sciences. In this paper, we analyze two recent such accounts, proposed by Harold Kincaid and Daniel Steel. We show how these two accounts radically differ in their notion of mechanism (a process account, and a complex system account, respectively), and how this ultimately impacts in the way in which they understand the inferential role of mechanisms in the social sciences. We then confront both accounts with the details of a well-known controversy around the purportedly causal association between the legalization of abortion and the subsequent fall in criminality in the United States. We show the limitations of both accounts in representing accurately the role of mechanistic evidence and hypotheses in practice.

In addition to demographics and ongoing changes on structures of families and societies, the way in which persons are interacting with organizations is also changing. These interactions are defining service delivery and also the way in which we are and will be working. The power of digital information foster by cloud, mobility and social media is heavily influencing these changes. Twitter for instance, generates in one day more than 12 terabytes and Facebook more than 15 terabytes, while many organizations in the world are producing and processing petabytes of information.We are certainly facing a new way of doing things and a new work force generation with different values and certainly different ways of understanding prevention and rehabilitation. Do we need to add new strategies and data analysis to prevent accidents and diseases and to bring people back to work? How much information are we prepared to use to properly combine personal medical findings with socio-environmental variables? Can we see trends in our field or in other sectors that can show us where we might be heading? Where is the future heading?This presentation is about reflecting on some evidence with the aim of provoking discussions and motivate the participants to jointly keep on finding better ways to cope with the future.
